So, I was laid off from the webdesign firm because they weren't getting paid by their contractors. It's pretty surprising, considering we heard nothing about it until three weeks ago. Afterwards, I was supposed to start working for an Internet cafe/copy center and agreed with the employer on 12/24 shifts and 250 euros, but lo and behold, the douchebag changed his mind when I got there, he wanted me to work for 13 hours everyday(from 8 in the morning to 9 in the evening) because they "need another person working day shifts". He was also very evasive when I asked about a contract to be signed and simply shrugged it off as "I have no copies now". Screw that, I took my bag and left for home. At least I still have something on the side, I translate a few shows for GINX TV in Romanian, pay is pretty shit but at least I can contribute at home with SOMETHING. Gonna be a pain to find another job in webdesign or content creation, I barely have 6 months at the previous firm. Fuckin' hate this country, I consider myself lucky, I know people that have a doctorate and still can't find a job, or finished a university.

Mate, I think it's time you left Romania and went somewhere a little less dickish to you Sad The amount of times a job has screwed you lately, don't you have any kind of employee rights? The whole "pay is pretty shit" for being a translator on a huge TV channel? Holy shit.. that's depressing Sad

Sucks to be out of the job, but hopefully something better will come along. Good luck mate.

Well, I am being sent scripts, and there aren't that many, if I were to translate 8 hours a day, as a normal job would be, pay would be pretty good, but there simply aren't that many things to translate, considering I am not the only one.

And yeah, I should probably move somewhere else, I am absolutely disgusted by the work industry here(dunno if it's everywhere like this but if you don't know someone or kiss some ass, or have godlike credentials) and people in general. Hell, I have a friend that works in a supermarket in Germany and last I spoke with him he made the same money I was making for the webdesign firm.

They don't hire people without a polytechnic university graduated, or in progress. I know, I've tried.

Actually, fuck it, I'm gonna apply anyway, there's no hurt in that.

This is true. I have a friend working for them, the hiring process was long and complicated. At the end, he was hired, and he gets good pay, getting in was the hard part.

Claude, how about switching cities? I lived in Timisoara, when I lived in Romania, and it was really great, when it came to things like these. Also, peeople living there are generally less prone to fucking people over, guess it's the closeness to the west.

Yeah, that's what I was getting paid for 8 hours at Ubisoft, and most of the time, I had to put in extra hours.

Well, the good news is a friend of mine which works for Cosmote is trying to put in a good word for me, join their refurbish/QC department.

More like 500 with extra hours and after taxes. I meant to say I was getting paid about 11 Euros per day, and usually had to stay after hours, which increased that amount, but not by much considering we rarely put in all-nighters. Can't say pre-tax since that's handled by every employer, you always get your salary after taxes.

That's why you get so many immigrants coming for half a year or so and then running back with their pockets full Laughing

Yup, I have no problem with it either. I'm not one of those "dey terk er jerbs!" whiners - if someone is willing to do the work then fair play to them. The only time I get narky about any of this is when it's "under the table" work, where immigrants work for a pittance compared to what the accepted wage should be, therefore locking out native workers. If it's for minimum wage, or whatever, then power to them!

I think that in the end I'm gonna work as a bartender, hell, it seems more steady than the stuff that's happening lately. Or buy a camera and follow in my girlfriend's steps, hell, even start up a studio both of us. I'm more knowledgeable in that stuff more than the USUAL Romanian DSLR user and I haven't even taken a photography class or something, just skimming through settings and a quick google every now and then. To be honest, I feel like it's not even worth trying to find a job in IT, it's so populated and basically ruled by HR and PR (and the respective, typical ASE girl working for that job) that if I make a simple spelling mistake during an interview I am automatically removed from their list. I don't even remember the last time I did an interview with a person that is knowledgeable of the domain I am trying to apply to, just chicks or guys that work in HR. It is absolutely infuriating because they know exactly fuck-all about the respective job except that I need to have the proper credentials. My girlfriend finished a university, got her master, and she stays away from that exactly because of people like this. She prefers to work on her own, independently. The whole ordeal with getting a job in Bucharest, or maybe Romania, I don't know, reminds of that video with the guy being asked to draw seven red, straight lines, perpendicular to each other, two with green ink, two with red and two with invisible ink.

 Spoiler:

At least when I got the webdesign job I spoke directly with the dude in charge, he understood I had no experience with front-end and they offered to train me on the design part only, which worked out just fine, until we found out our firm hasn't been paid in a while and all they could do was lay off 70% percent of the people working there, with a faint glimmer of hope in the form of "we'll call you when the situation straightens itself out".

Sorry for the rant, I am really pissed about this whole thing. And I'm not even the only one in it, there's thousands of young people in my exact shoes, and they're even more qualified than me.

Very Happy

The problem of what I've seen is that reactioary people like the ukip guys are not even interested in integration, only isolationism (not as if the UK are the only ones with extremists, we have our own brand of nazi scum in the form of 'Jobbik' with lovely antisemitic/antigypsy rethoric Sad ). It took me a month to get an NI number. Others who are here for longer got theirs after a week. Can't be a coincidence that just when these people get their populist ideas out there, the job centre people suddenly develop a month worth of backlog.

Personally, it's not even about integration. The thing is that foreigners come here to take jobs the native English kids won't go near. I'm flipping burgers right now until i get the mythical "experience" other employers are always demanding of our heroes, but not a single native in sight. Spanish and Indian speaking people are the work force in my place. If I had to guess, the boss would be more than happy to have an English girl at the front, but instead we have Africans and South Americans with borderline acceptable language skills.

But the natives won't take these jobs and if the ukip people would have their way, 90% of fast food joints would close down overnight.

But it's always a good thing when you're not the current scapegoat of the populists. Razz

Happens here as well. No one would take a job in the food industry, they'd rather stay at home. Although it can be understood, the working conditions and salaries are the lowest of the low. Hell, I wouldn't do it, but that's only because I have the translation thingy going on, if it weren't for that, I'd be flipping burgers too. There's no shame in that. It's still money that you earned, worked with your back, and your hands, and your time.

The advantage here is that you can put a little away even on minimum wage, if I sort my expenses carefully, I'd be able to afford a high-end gaming latop in about 3-4 months. It would be impossible to even have a day-by-day living on minimum wage at home. Sad
