Played the first level, felt very "generic" and run-of-the-mill to be honest, let's hope it's just because it's the first stage...

And that's how first levels in games should be.
You want people to learn how to play the game, not to punish them before they even start enjoying it.

seems to be getting great reviews so far on metacritic,,, Anyone knows the difference between the pc and the 3ds /wii u version ? I heard the later uses the extra screen as item management, might be useful.

Yep, thankfully it does get more challenging after that (not much, mind you, but enough to be fun), with lots of different enemies and even some environmental traps/tricks. There are several checkpoints (unlike ye old games, but you can not use them if you want), so everything is manageable. Bosses seem quite easy so far, though.

Yep, it does get challenging later. Just like any properly designed game.

One of late game levels:

So far the only weak spot of this game is rather mediocre soundtrack.

From gameplay standpoint, air control could be better, much better. But oh well.

Otherwise - very addictive and fun platfromer. All this done right.

nothing i ve heard from the soundtrack so far is even close to mediocre, it sounds amazing if you like oldschool 8 bit tunes.

Me playing with keyboard: what a disaster!

Maybe I just plain suck.
But, I had real difficulties performing shovel jump which requires 3 keys and is one of primary ways of travel in the game.

For example left and then jump and down in same time. I was failing a lot. Barely finished first level after lots of deaths.

Years ago I had no problem almost finishing meat boy (stiuck at last pre-boss level). But that game did not require juggling between 3 keys for most if the time.

Am I missing something, or is game just controller friendly.

Bought it just as it was released, played till I had the second knight defeated. It's great! Everything feels very tight and controlled.

I'm certain this is exactly what they want it to feel, very oldschool, Megaman-esque.

This game is a real work of passion for the old 8-bit platformers, with some details that brings it up to current gameplay design (like the checkpoints, or the shops in town). However, you can also destroy the checkpoints for additional 1000 points, so if you feel confident, try that.

There are also lots of hidden/hard-to-reach areas in levels for more points or spells, which I really miss in modern games.

It does. Never siad the opposite However, compare to to any other OST of any other game of NES/SNES era, for example (Duck Tales, Darkwing Duck, Master Blaster, Battletoads) it is rather simplistic and primitive. Honestly, even simple Mario tunes I liked better.

But that is of course a subjective factor. OST still fits well enough the game.

I'm mostly bothered by air control. Can't get used to it.

Ok, I started playing better. Finished 3 levels. Still in 3rd level I was dying so often that I had less then 1000 gold when facing the boss. And then it took a couple of dozen deaths to kill the death guy, by learning his attacks and improving my awful reflexes.

Now, my plan is too spend as much as possible gold before entering any new levels. Otherwise that is just wasted gold.

Interesting enough, you can farm previously solved levels. So if you are missing a little bit of gold to buy some upgrades, replay 1st level and get the gold. Due to this, loss of gold on harder levels will not be as punishable as I though it would be.

Cheers, works wonders

It's incredible how such a "simple" game can be so much more entertaining than most of the one-billion dollar AAAwesome button games out there. Some people even dare to say "but hey, it's the nostalgia factor"...nope, it's really that good. And it also gets progressively harder, more than I initially though Razz

Played more levels and I have to agree, it gets better and better. Quite challenging without being frustrating thanks to the generous amount of checkpoints. Anyone that loves the Mega Man games will definitely be loving this.

Only (very small) problem I found is that the shovel jump/bounce sometimes gets stuck (keeps doing the bouncing animation even when I release the controls and even if there's nothing to bounce on). Died a couple of times due to this, annoying but it's not that common, so I can look past it.

Overall, great game.
