My sister had a baby girl, now she wants to buy a new camera to capture the "ooooohhhh so cuuuuteeee" moments. SInce I know zilch about these things, I'll ask here.
Can someone recommend me a good camera for max 250 euros? No video, just pics. It doesn't have to have 1000x optical zoom or super sexy touchscreen, the most important thing is best picture quality within the given budget.

So my sister bought her camera a long time ago, I recommended her the Panasonic DMC-TZ40. Now I am in the market for a camera, which will have to last me years. I can stretch my budget to 300 euros. The TZ40 still seems to be a great camera and tbh I can't afford any of the better models (Panasonic TZ40, Sony RX100, Canon S120). The TZ40 can be bought for 250 euros.

Can you guys recommend me something better for the price? I'm a bit weary since the TZ40 is old now, I have no clue whether a year of tech is a big leap in cameraland though.

Definitely the Lumix DMC-LX7, which can be pricey, but you can pick up on the bay for far cheaper Smile Wink

Awesome camera and video recording Smile

That's an even older camera and it costs 350 euros. Should I not be bothered with buying old tech?
Damn the Sony RX100 looks really sexy and has 50 euro cashback, almost bringing the price to 360.

So many choices Crying or Very sad

I hate those huge cameras though, very cumbersome. I borrowed a DSLR from a friend couple of years ago for vacation, after having it hanging from my neck for two days, I just left it at the hotel.

I realized 250 euros isn't much (poor me) so I stretch the budget to 350. Problem is, I get even more choices now. Camera country is a freakin jungle. I saw the Sony HX60 at the store today, that one seems great too Sad

The cashback for RX100 doesn't work with online stores, so it'll be 450-50 in this case.

What is a good site for camera reviews? I've been recommended dpreview, but I don't understand their rating system. The whole review of the RX100 is filled with awesomeness, but in teh end it gets 78%. huh?

For a small camera with an excellent sensor, I recommend the mirrorless Sony NEX 6. It's a entry-level DSLR sensor (APS-C), but the camera is mirrorless, so no bulky design. Kit lens is good enough, and it's an interchangeable lens, so she can swap from a telephoto lens to a prime in an instant.

You can opt for the the older NEX 5 & 5N, but I don't think there is that much of a price difference, and quality is noticeably better in the 6.

Fuck it, I'm going for the TZ40 I think. It's relatively cheap, has great zoom and video and picture quality seems very nice. It's still an old cam though, so I don't know what to think of that. There's an extreme abundance of cameras, it's crazy.

go for APS-C (NEX-3N is the cheapest) or Micro 4/3 systems (Panasonic GF series is cheap). Everything with large zoom have microscopic sensors - results are bad quality everywhere where light conditions are not that good.

If image quality is main concern I would buy used DSLR over any super zoom or point and shoot.

DSLRs are not an option due to size and weight, I'm willing to sacrifice some IQ for (almost) pocket size cams. Since my main concern is photographing my baby girl, I won't be able to walk around with a DSLR on my neck all the time.

TZ40 seems to be the best choiuce for me since it's cheap and it got raving reviews at the time. The RX100 is excellent, but the price is just too much Sad

go with nex-3n then. With those new power lenses they are quite compact. Panasonic GF3 is comparable but worse IQ.

I've been there an went with Nex 5-n about 3 years ago.

With children you want good IQ indoor with not that good lightning. You don't want to use flash there. At least I don't.

I ordered the RX100 guys. Why not go for the best I thought. Panasonic LX7 was another candidate, but my wife didn't like the bulk of it. I told her to choose one, since she'll be using it more than me, she chose the RX100. Low light performance is essential for me, RX100 seems to be great in that department (sexy sensor). 3.6X zoom is also more than I thought, so I'll deal with it.
28mm and 3.6x zoom is a bit shit, but you can't have everything in that tiny package.

RX100 is slightly lower NEX3n in terms of IQ. The price isn't much higher though?

The problem with the NEX-3N is: why not go for an SLR if you're fine with the interchangeable lens and size anyway?

Which brings another problem. Why go for a small camera with interchangeable lens, when you may as well go DSLR?

Wink

Needs, and depends, and of course, cash.

The body is indeed dmall enough, but the lens itself is pretty big. Since I don't plan to change lenses either, that camera has no added value for me. It is a great cam though.

How is the Samsung NX300M with a 18-55mm lens compared to the RX100? It has a lot of sexy features, APS-C and cashback. I can sell my RX100 for 425, the NX300M would cost 450 (with cashback).
