if fuel price is an issue, get a 1.9 or 2.0 TDI VAG group car - 5-6L/100km city driving

In Poland we had diesel cheaper up until a few years back. Now it's the same or even more expensive. But still - diesels use less per 100km, but are usually more expensive to buy...Really depends on how much you drive.

škodas seem quite efficient and other expenses shouldnt be that big either. At least, that's the case with newer ones. Probably same goes for skoda octavias from a few years ago.

On CO2. Doesn't include all the other crap diesel engines spit out
Lots of nitrogen compounds + sulfur, much more so than petrol engines

That is the dumbest fucking comparison ever. Both of those cars have more powerful engines than whatever 2.0 TDI you have so that already skews that comparison. But even so, you misread what I said. When you say "pollution" you mean CO2 emissions, which is what the EuroX standards are about. The reason some governments -Dutch included- tax diesel so much higher, is because a diesel engine inherently produces what they call "fine particulates". Or to put it in simpler terms: really, really, really fine dust that consists of all kinds of chemical shit, one of which is sulfur. That is much more damaging to human health than CO2 emissions. They don't fuck up our ozone layer, they fuck us up instead. That's why some governments tax them more.
So yes, CO2 emissions on diesel engines are lower. Although, with the Euro5 and Euro6 the difference is getting smaller and smaller; petrol engines have made huge leaps in the last 15-20 years, whereas diesel engines haven't changed anywhere near as much. They still spit out the nasty crap.
@ Sev: why so set on Jap + stationcars?

For several years now, diesel doesn't contain sulfur, also there are DPF filters for the other stuff..

Just a question, but have you thought about owning a car which can also drive with LPG ?
I have it and it halved my fuel costs.
Though, it is quite surprising that fuel price is an issue in Norway. (profit margins probably)

In DR we use a LOT of those Hyundai N20, the Sonata, its a LPG factory vehicle and its supposed to be fucking ridiculously efficient.
