Yes the game is out, some people had it for 2+ days already but it seems the new starforce is proving to be a bitch again.

Even though in most of european countries the game was in stores today, players from Poland will have to wait propably until December 12!!! I don't think many people will wait almost 2 months to get that game, even though the price is really low! Way to go Cenega! That's how you loose customers...

I still don't see how it prevents you from attacking from two sides at once. Maybe that is more a function of that particular engine and not turn based games. In Silent Storm I was more than capable of attacking from more than one side/location. In the event of grenades well, that depended on the reaction time of your unit. Sometimes when an enemy reacts to your guy, you get a chance to interrupt and you can shoot, run, etc. Sometimes you don't. Samething in realtime, maybe you see that grenade, maybe you don't.
Maybe if they used a good engine you wouldn't feel so. I'd highly recommend you go play some silent storm and the add-on Sentinels.

Well, after my recent outburst, i must apologize to every living god of pc games.
I checked our local store, and the game arrived just in time for me to pick it up before closing.
Did i say, this may be the one? Well.. this is the one. At least for me, for now. The combat has even more depth than i first anticipated from the demo, and the management part lives up to my expectations.
Laying out tracks was a mess at first, but once you understand the mechanics, it gets a lot easier.
The only negative sides until now:
- Intro. i really can not say a good word about the intro. The sound was low quality and the video was well below anything i would call 'decent'. Then again, you do not watch it more than once, so it'll not subtract from the value of the game in any way.
- Movement. Sometimes soldiers get stuck behind eachother. Instead of waiting for the other to move, you get the 'i cant move' message, and have to issue a new move order. A really rare flaw, but in some cases it can be 'distracting'
- Game pace. You do not really have to take breaks between missions. You can just go on and on... I havent specifically tried, but i could swear you can do infinite ammount of missions during a single 'pause' of the geospace. Meaning that you can get 5-10 missions done during one moment of the geoscape world. This is odd to say at least, but since your soldiers will get hurt pretty soon, and will need time to train, plus you'll need to build your own stuff, so i find myself spending more and more time in time-acceleration to speed up building / recovering
All in one, game pace is not a serious problem, then again it would be better to have some 'forced' delay between missions. Travel time or something, like in the orig. ufo games.
Still.. considering how all these are just minor flaws, i can do nothing else but to recomment this one to all who loved the original xcom series.

With all the latest improvements made with SF workaround, a sfcure based release is possible. The only problem is that this game is maybe not enough popular so that scene groups like Mirror can spend time to release it
Just my 2 cents....

the creation of a dvd image that works with sfcure is a matter of minutes. point is that this game is not exactly on the top of the "to release" list

They are very similar.
Two basic diferences:
- SS is turn-based and UFO is real-time.
- UFO has a strategic part where you can research, build, etc, besides the squad-based tactical game.
I love turn-based games and hate real-time ones. The exception is UFO-AS and UFO-AM. They are real-time but are very good.

I wouldn't mind paying US$45 for a game as good as UFO:AS. The problem is that with shipping and import taxes, the price doubles. And it is very hard to find someone willing to ship it to Brazil.

Had it been turn based like old school x-com then i would've loved it. As it is with this timing system. Well this timing system is enough for me to hate the game.

I feel the same way about the real-time shit, it has no place at all in a game that's supposed to be a successor to X-COM. Sounds like that part of the game hasn't changed much since Aftermath, and that was what made Aftermath completely unplayable imo.

I for one love the semi-realtime thing, i dont wanna press a friggen end turn button when all im doing is walking forward with no enemies in sight!
Once you have the pause settings set up like you want them, it becomes turn-based as soon as combat takes place, or before.
Well ok, not turn based as in wait for the enemies turn, but that sucks anyway. Glad its not in here, more like simultaneous turns, such as Age Of Wonders, thats the way to play.

I gotta say, I'm pretty damn excited about this game.
I've played all the X-Coms, and while I really enjoyed the turn-based aspect of it, it's also a HUGE pain in the ass, and frankly, I don't have the patience for it anymore. In preperation for Aftershock, I went back and played X-COM TFTD, and all my childhood memories fell flat on their ass.
"I actually played this, for more than a mission?"
Holy crap is it tedious. Click, move, click move. It takes forever to do things.
I wasn't a huge fan of Aftermath when it came out, but I also gave it another shot this week, and with all the patches it's really quite fun. One of the few things I did like about it WAS the real-time system. It was really quite polished; speeding things up 3x helped break the tedium of some missions, while pausing and playing at 1x let you control things at a tactical level.
What is impressive is that Cenga has concentrated on improving the parts of the game that users complain about! (Go figure...)
- non-destructable environment: in AM it wasn't really possible, in AS you can supposedly blow up anything but floors and building frames/supports
- research system was a little obtuse in AM, in AS there is tons to research.
- no base management in AM, in AS you can build all sorts of base facilities
Aftershock has greatly improved on the tactical system. Stealth is now a huge factor. There is 'perception', so you can hear or sense (if your a Psionic) your enemies. And melee troops can really clean up because of skills that let you rush.
And have you seen the weapon modifications? It looks fantastic. If you have an assault rifle, for example, you have 3 spots to mount weapon modifications: scope/visor, muzzle, underbarrel. You could have an assault rifle with motion detector (scope), silencer, and grenade launcher.
I tend to read their forums once in a while, and I'm truly jealous of reading other people's game experiences . That said, there are quite a few complains:
- quite a few inventory bugs which result in crash
- messed up line-of-sight -- you get penalties for shooting over a teammate that is lying down in front of you
- end-of-mission looting is wonky
- no interception (which I don't care too much about, it was a silly mini-game and nothing more)
- 'track system' which you use to connect your bases is buggy
On the positive site, because Aftershock is developed/distributed by a non-north american company, you're much more likely to see timely patches.

Well, yea... I don't think anyone wants it to be totally turn-based. After playing Jagged Alliance, FO:T, Silent Storm, etc. going back to turn-based even when not in combat would be horrible. Look at how much everyone who played Paradise Cracked hated it, and that was the number one complaint about that game. Once combat starts, it's got to be turn-based though or it doesn't deserve to be associated with X-COM at all.

Newsflash:
THIS IS NOT XCOM. It has all that made the x-com series great (for me at least), but it is not a successor of any kind. So either accept it as a new game, that tries to provide a similar (or even better) experience, or well.. bash it for not being 100% like the original xcom was.
I think it is better in many areas, a bit weaker in some. Overally it is a genious crossbreed of xcom, fallout tactics and jagged alliance 2.
Plus the devs really care about the customers. After all, the 'success' of the previous game made this one possible. The previous one 'won' because of the xcom successor hype. This one can succeed on its own.
