Eh, I'm hoping the optimization is a lot more Max Payne 3 than GTA IV. And I personally thought that Max Payne 3 ran really well on my PC, which had a 560 Ti or something at the time.

Well, Max Payne 3 is one of the best optimized games in the last 5 years Wink

So you really think that the RAGE engine in 2008-2009 was perfectly optimized, but only ran like one of the worst optimized games ever because it was an open world game vs. a corridor shooter?

If you can't see that Max Payne 3 had a comparatively large amount of optimization vs. GTA 4 (re: none), even considering the different types of game, I don't know what to say.

Its not that we don't see the optimization, its just that we differ on the source of the optimization.

you mention gtx 560ti, which when it comes to gta 4 is irrelevant. its a cpu limited game. max 3 is just gta 4 minus the open world.

thats just about all the optimization i see. removing the cpu overhead by cutting out a huge world is not something i would call optimization.

but i could be wrong, i'm no developer. Very Happy

What the hell did I just read? So Rockstar "cut" a huge world out of Max Payne 3? Did that huge open world ever exist in the first place? Laughing

Of course a 560 Ti is irrelevant to GTA IV. You're just imagining that I said anything about that. The point was that I think Max Payne 3 ran and looked better on a 560 Ti than most other games from 2012. Which is a sign of good optimization.

And GTA IV's optimization problems were hardly limited to the CPU, especially at launch (yes, becoming CPU bound was the major problem, and is pretty much the only problem now). The game was a freak show of terrible optimization.

Further, I guess my point is more that Max Payne 3 shows that Rockstar actually, at least for that game, cared about PC optimization. Given that countless other open world games run fine on gaming PCs, I think that as long as they put a half-decent amount of effort into it, Rockstar can achieve the same results with GTA V as other developers have with their open world games.

This whole meme of assuming GTA V will run like shit is based on how poorly GTA IV run, and all I'm pointing out is that they HAVE released a well-optimized PC port since then. Yes, a different type of game, but still it showed (to my eyes) a commitment to actually having the game look and run really well on the PC. So I don't think that GTA IV's incredibly poor performance is necessarily what we should expect from V.

I really don't see what's so hard to understand about that.

What are you smoking? They just confined the main character and all the action inside a small bubble and removed all the hundreds of NPC's, vehicles and vibrant city that were intended for the game. Then they called it optimization.

GeForce.com had a article about the game so I guess Nvidia are working with Rockstar.
(Which I think they did for GTA IV as well so nothing new there, although RAGE 2.x or whatever should run better.)

oh come on, i meant engine wise. max payne 3 is the same engine, with the open world taken out of the equation.

If you make a small map in an engine, and an open world in the same engine, do you call it optimization that the smaller map gets better framerate? I don't.

we are talking about the same engine in both games, you said max 3 is optimized, ran great on 560ti, while the topic is gta 4 vs max 3.

so to me it sounds like you expected gta IV to run great on 560 ti.

look up any benchmark from release. it was and still is a cpu limited game. vram limited as well, sure, but at the time of release, the cpu was the limiting factor well before the gpu limits would be reached.

I just don't agree with the fact that rockstar did any extra work on mp 3. its just a less demanding game to port due to the smaller scope.

Thats my opinion, if you have development side evidence of otherwise, then by all means share it, I could be wrong.

Also, sentences like "you are imagining, and i don't really see whats so hard to understand".

really, if you wanna discuss stuff, at least don't be condescending, or put a smiley face so i can take it light heartedly. Like i did now when replying to 4treyu to clear up what I meant.

Otherwise, expect the discussion to turn into a monologue. If you are here for that, then carry on.

Honestly, when I see that Laughing face it always leaves me wondering whether the person is being an intentionally gigantic asshole or joking around. But anyway, point taken. Wasn't meaning to be offensive, I just felt like you were misrepresenting what I said.

And I guess we'll just have to disagree about their engine optimization.

Still, I'll never be convinced that they didn't put a lot more effort into Max Payne 3's PC version. And I know you can't trust a game developer as far as you can throw one, but upon doing some googling, Rockstar claimed at the time that they put a lot more effort into MP3's PC version. So my opinion that they put more effort into it isn't entirely unsupported.

Try again...All three games uses GFWL, and for multiplayer RGSC(old version) is required.

Did anybody of you avtually believe that this game will use steamworks and not Rockstar Social Club, like MP3..? Laughing

Patch 1.0.6.0 didn't remove GFWL, that's right but it did remove the need for RGSC's seperate program. That was enough of a hassle anyway, to start one game.
