It's only "simple" in the sense that all the pieces necessary exist.
Prototypes can be thrown together with pieces of chip board, wires and duct tape poking out.
Putting them together in a functional consumer product is the hard part.
Developing hardware is hard, iteration takes a long time, integrating chips, culling the excess, optimizing for purpose.
Especially for a small startup.
The tech used in the new HMDs isn't special in terms of what's available for phones either, but Oculus and Sony are still the only ones who actually got it into a functional combination.
I really hope they get IMU prices down though.
$600 is waaaay too much for even just the upper torso, and PrioVR isn't much cheaper.

All i care for is vr like oculus.. and i know its great because i had dk1 and ordered dk2.
this is real and works. Now even when I go to cinema, I think about oculus and how it looks just like real life.
sitting exp with controller or mouse is ik for me.
just adding flight stick or wheel tho, makes the experience as real as possible minis g forces and wind

Yeah too expensive.. the most boring part with this new tech is that just a handful of games will have support. It might even die out in a year and the product is rendered completely useless, it's risky to spend $600 on something just because the tech is cool, it's not like you're guaranteed to have much use of it. Also, from a publishers view; why even spend money on implementing support if just 0.01% of the customers have the hardware? Not worth the effort at all.
Track-IR has been available for years now and have tons of more customers than this new hardware, yet there's very, very few games that uses it. The pricing is just completely off on these things, just a few hardcore gamers will spend that type of money so in return just a few games will get support.
That's one thing i like with the Rift, hoping this FB deal will finally make a VR product commercial so that we can have tons of games with support implemented.

I wouldn't worry about oculus support. Users are creating countless apps and mods to support vr

Oh trust me EVERY game will have OR support. Track-IR - no one talked about it when it appeared that's why no dev cared. Now every kid, retired grandpa and housewife know what OR is.

Lucky's tale... It's fucking mario 64... same camera angle, same gameplay, except you can look around with the third person camera..
First official E3 Oculus title and it's this shit?!
I'm just angry now.
If they could make one game that would get people to think of the rift as "a useless accessory", it would be this game.
It's essentially a virtualboy game since you don't even need to move your head at all.

Have you tried any of the 3rd person demos on the Rift? They're surprisingly awesome. In Volo Airsport, the wingsuit game, I actually prefer 3rd person over 1st person. It's an odd, awesome sensation feeling like you're just hovering over your little buddy and you have this weird connection with them. I agree that, to the average person that doesn't realize that you actually feel like you're there floating in the air, like for real, this looks completely stupid and is missing the point. But VR is by no means limited to first person experiences. Anyway, we should be seeing an explosion of first impressions in the next couple days so I guess we'll find out what people think. Personally, if this game is done right, is a comfortable VR experience, and is actually fun, I can imagine myself spending many more hours in this compared to, say, Valkyrie (Which is definitely amazing, just a little intense for multi-hour play sessions.)
Explaining to someone who's never tried VR what this experience feels like and how it's vastly different than staring at the same game on a 2d monitor would be similar to explaining to the blind how green differs from red.

If I give in to the Occulus Zuk-sorry Rift, I want to be able to use it as a static 2D monitor too - is this not possible?
Deskope - That answers my question

I don't mind the change in perspective.
I did try Dark and a few other third person VR games and yea, it works and is immersive and comfortable.
But the gameplay looks to be no different from playing on a monitor, except you're wearing a bucket over your head.
This will get people asking "why do i have this thing on my head?"

A Finnish current affairs/news magazine programme did a segment on VR and asked me to show off my VR gear.
Most of my stuff got cut out (yay!) but I still appear briefly, strapping people in and hyping a word or two.
There is really no new information and no English subtitles, so I don't know if it's of interest to anyone.
Spoiler: | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOtbfixkaS4 |
Would have been nice if they would have kept the bit about my games in and other faffing about.

For me the money for the DK2 was first "locked" for 1-2 days, then released again. Is that how it was supposed to be, they will charge it when it's sent out?
