|

There is a Russian group called R.G. Mechanics that releases "repacks" of games that are sometimes several gigabytes smaller. Are they downsampling the textures and audio and video or something? They must be, because there is no way that they are somehow compressing everything that much better than the original release groups.

No idea, but I love their releases. Nicely put together with a very well thought out installer.

It depends on what games you're talking about. Sometimes they extract archives and repack them using much higher levels of compression, sometimes they resample movies from 1080 to 720 ... and sometimes it's something as easy as ripping multilanguage support.

I've downloaded a few of their releases, Resident Evil 5 and 6, and Borderlands. I don't play any at high settings, so i cant say anything about that, but i can say that they all work perfectly, at least the ones ive gotten anyway. I admit i was surprised at how much space they're saving, their Borderlands release with all DLC is only a bit bigger than the standard games scene release.

I haven't seen or realized anything bad about their repacks. What they do is mostly ripping out languages other than english and russian.

Just read the torrent info or nfo file.
As others before me said already - depends from the game. Some games can be make smaller with just high compression, others with removing additional languages. But "repacks" in 95% of cases does not have anything important cut or shrunken, like textures or videos. Those releases are called "rip"s and they have that word in their name.

Most of the russian repackers are doing lossless repacks these days, there are still exceptions from time to time of course. Often their repacks are the only copies with all dlcs and updates included, so it really saves a lot of time. The repacks shouldn't be confused with game rip releases from back in the day. If something is re-encoded or cut there should be a mention in the nfo or in the custom installer.

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of repacks - especially for larger, more DLC/patch heavy titles.
