Sony will cease shipments of the PlayStation Portable to the domestic Japanese market beginning June 2014, the company announced today.
Sony revealed the discontinuation of the PSP in Japan in an announcement for two PlayStation Vita Super Value Packs for the region. Sony is offering users in country PS Vita product discounts for PSP trade-ins. The Universal Media Disc-using handheld console was first announced during E3 2003 and officially unveiled at a Sony press conference a year later. It launched in Japan in late 2004, North America in early 2005 and PAL regions late 2005.
Wow. Ten years... ten freakin' years I was running a gamestore when this first came out and we imported half a dozen Japanese models. They sold out in a single weekend - even sold one on a Sunday, including all available games
Absolutely, no contest. Even today, with the huge advent of Android portables, many still advocate the PSP for handheld emulation. SNES was hit and miss at the start but has long since been just shy of perfect and everything else is fantastic! Playing Neo/CPS/GBA/PS1 titles on the PSP was amazing and the machine itself got an absolutely CRACKING library of games covering every damned genre you can think of - not to mention one of the best versions of Phantasy Star Online ever; Phantasy Star Portable 2 \o/
