"It's an awe inspiring, beautiful, vast place; with 100 billion star systems, planets, moons and asteroid fields just waiting to be explored and exploited."
I don't understand why it's such a problem adding an external view. I completely understand and agree we with them that we should not be able to control and fight in combat scenarios, that's not the way Elite should be. So simply add a fly by camera view, that is all we need.
People can then see their ship and create the videos they want.
The way it was done in the video, I could live with, as it doesn't give any advantage in combat.
yeah, thats exactly why they didnt do it... MP advantage in combat. There have been so many threads about it in the alpha and beta forums that I think, if anything was to be added, they would have said something by now, but they have been resolute with their design decision
*sigh* I guess this one isn't for me, sadly. I put some real effort in last night, playing as much as I could and desperately trying to get to grips with the controls.. but it's just not for me. The controls are so sluggish and clunky and definitely built from the ground up to be played with stick/throttle. I tried the keyboard/mouse and the mouse was awful, it either emulates the feel of a stick or it needs pushing constantly and neither feel good or intuitive to me. So I switch to the 360 controller and that's better, but not even close to what I would be comfortable using, it has no accuracy or sense of control. Everything about it is just too slow and lethargic, there's absolutely no sense of speed or feeling of engagement, the only time you can even dogfight properly is by disabling flight assist but then the ship just shakes and wobbles and spins all over the place >_<
I have no doubt everyone else is coping just fine, but it's just not for me Shame too.

It takes time. I played Elite 2 on the keyboard back in the early 90s and although not as complex, I remember having to practice. On their forums, there are some posts that talk about using a keyboard and one guy posted a guide with mappings that worked for him and thought it might help others.
Still, I found it hard to use the keyboard when I played but thankfully, I borrowed a Saitek X52 from a co-worker so I'm excited to try it out.
This is nothing like Frontier, I played Frontier to *death* and had no trouble with it. This just doesn't feel right (to me) and I don't want to devote untold quantities of time trying to get to grips with something that doesn't feel right. I appreciate the sentiment but it's just not for me
Like I said; not very well for me. It doesn't feel right and you're constantly swaying all over the place trying to target anything. It probably feels awesome for everyone else or those really into flight sims, but egh.
Watch from 5m onwards and that's exactly how it is. No stability, no control, just sway roll sway roll sway, shooting aimlessly and struggling to get a bead on the target. Again, this might be normal and fine for everyone else, but I'm not keen.

something I actually disagree with you on... we must have a Hump troll war immediately
But no, I think this game, like SC (if you can call it a game.....grumble...) is specifically designed for stick - I remember playing the previous God of space combat, Freespace with mouse for ages. Then I got myself (and still want now) a Sidewinder FF2 - and the experience was like a new game - I was twisting and turning my way through the game, managing to finally keep up with those damned Dragon class Shivans. Good times, and I can't now imagine playing any space sim without one.
So... um... you DON'T disagree with me and you actually AGREE?

Wouldn't matter even if I wanted to; no income. Couldn't even afford one of those shitty $30 HOTAS, and if I did have the cash it would go to something much more important right now.. like my bartop build, a new GPU or finally joining the Master Race and getting an SSD So no, no stick, and it's obvious that the mouse/360 controls are less than ideal.
Perhaps I'm just spoiled by games like Freelancer and Freespace/Evochron, which seem perfectly suited for mouse flight. I just used the video above to exemplify the issues I had when trying to play with 360 controller.
I might get shoved out of an airlock for this, but I didn't much like Freelancer's combat controls... seemed very easy tbh. I suppose I just like the rolling rather than strafing combat type
Although I still wish they'd had more Dyson Sphere missions... that was epic!

Yeah, that's probably it! I was speaking to Paul about it a while back, talking about how incredibly slow the yaw speed is on this, and that's pretty much it; I prefer the strafing movement to the roll then up/down alignments. I find it clunky.
