Look in the Task Manager>Startup and look at the Startup Impact of each app.

Check Event Viewer, see if anything standouts, errors on boot, disk errors, blah blah blah.

Check if a SFS/SCANNOW picks up any corrupt files.

Create another account.

Reformat.

I'm new to this OS. Reconfiguring an ACER W510 for my parents, win8.0 32bit.
Fucking shit interface, and it's not even in english.

Couple of questions:
1. how the fuck do I get rid of the horrid tiles and get a simple start menu back, found several third party tools, not sure which to pick
2. if I update it to 8.1, how much space would that take? currently the memory of the notebook is 16gb of 32. I can spare max 10 more.
3. I created a custom wifi connection, but it's inactive, and I can't view it to edit it now, how do I show hidden connections?

I'm near apoplectic with rage. I despise Windows 8 at the best of times, clunky counter-intuitive ugly buggy piece of broken shit that it is, but today has been one problem after another. You can't upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7 and I didn't want to format and lose everything or spend a day backing shit up and restoring, so I had to upgrade to Windows 8 and *then* go to 8.1. Thing is, you can't go to 8.1 unless 8 is fully updated... and therein lies the fucking problem. After sitting through an hour of downloading and installing updates (1.4GB worth), the system reboots and then gets stuck in that godfuckingdamn "Failure configuring Windows" BULLSHIT.

It's a massive problem with Windows 8 (not 8.1, apparently! Fixed there! Rolling Eyes) going back two fucking YEARS. Every solution is different to the previous solution and so nothing works. So it's update, fail, revert changes (which takes 1hr++++++++ and loops through multiple reverts) back to desktop, update again.

Ad fucking infinifuckingtem.

The irony of not wanting to spend all day reinstalling Windows and my apps/settings, while spending all day trying to fix a broken Windows update, is definitely not lost on me.

Because you can't, not if you want to keep settings/setup, the installer blanks everything and only saves your "personal files" - so the plan was to go 8 and then 8.1 At this point I'm so pissed with everything that I'd be better off just wiping the lot and installing Win 8.1 direct from ISO.

Yup, my sentiments exactly. You can upgrade from 7 to 8 no problem at all (theoretically, at least... today has shown there are PLENTY of problems doing so Rolling Eyes) but 8.1? No sir, can't do that, nope.

Oh fuck it. Formatting and installing clean fresh 8.1. It'll take less time than downloading and installing ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY INDIVIDUAL UPDATES Facepalm That's the only way I can find out which update is killing the process and forcing everything to revert. I can't be arsed. I'd rather just spend a couple of hours installing/restoring apps and settings.

@LeoNatan

Because I'm tired and annoyed and I've wasted 7 hours on this today already. I already have a clean direct-from-MS 8.1 ISO (I've got a legit key from my little brother so I grabbed a burnable ISO using their online tool) and I can get it installed and up and running in less than half an hour. Restoring my apps can be a day-by-day thing.

@scaramonga

Yup, that was always my ethos too but so many der... "people" claim that Windows upgrade paths are a lot better lately and it's worth doing. Pffft.

I'm too with scaramonga's view on things. I always freshly install Windows. I prefer installing/configuring a gazillion programs and/or games post-installation than to risk the upgrading process messing something on a grander scale.

As for Windows 8 itself - I'm on a year-old installation now and have never had any trouble with it. It's as if it's been fixed up only a few days ago.

who in the hell updates their os to next version Very Happy even ms advise against it.

The reason being is just as sabin found out, many people hit issues and it turns into being longer to sort out than if they had just wiped and reinstalled.

I've pretty much got Win8.1 how I want it but I just can't get Aero Glass working decently Sad It's installed and looking nice, but only on standard windows .. full screen apps have full Glass and it means the sodding tabs in Firefox are all transparent when full screen Facepalm I'd be happy without Glass and just having the rounded corners/buttons rather than this boxy Win8 crap but it seems you can't have one without the other.. because if you "disable" the Glass look then you lose the rounded corners >_<

Fuck it, I'd rather have legible windows than pretty ones. I'll disable Glass for now, it's not worth the headaches Sad

On OS X, I've been upgrading now for 3 years consecutively, with beta releases in between and there have been no issues. On Windows, on the other hand, this shit has never gone smoothly.

While upgrading your windows installation will normally be fine the most basic advantage of having a clean installation is that all of your systems can begin with the same configuration. All applications, files, and settings are reset. You can use a single disk image or answer file to make sure that all of the desktops in your organization are standardized. In this way, you can avoid many of the support problems that are caused by irregular configurations.

^^ seems like they advise well to me. The last part is key to them knowing the shit storm they can cause lol

There's a huge update (kb3000850) which is under optional updates. I've read a bit up on it, it seems to cause problems for some people (crashes etc.). Is this some kind of beta "use at your own risk" updates? Is that why it's under optional?

I also install every update through WU. No system crashes or any other erroneous behavior for the past year or so on my current W8 installation. The huge update mentioned above - I've had it installed for maybe a month now and have experienced nothing out of the ordinary so far.

I've 'hidden' it in updates, as its uncertain, yet, if it causes anything, but at 725Mb, its changing something, thus I will wait a little while longer before making my decision to install or not. After all, it's 'optional', and best left to the lab rats for testing Wink
