Well this was a fucked up weekend, that's for damned sure Wifey and I were looking after our best friend's rabbit dachshund for the week and it was going great - the doggie, Orianna, is awesome and friendly and with near-limitless reserves of energy .. she's just insanely fun to be around, though very tiring for our own aging miniature dachshund. Unfortunately her insane energy reserves kind of screwed up this weekend - as late Sunday night she was running around the house, bounding on the bed and off again, but didn't quite land correctly as she jumped and broke her leg just above the front knee The sound was something you'd wish to go your entire life without hearing and I don't think I'll ever forget it. Horrible screaming/yelping sound that seemed to go on for ages
After phoning a late night vet, who advised us that it might not be broken but rather just seriously sprained since Ori was able to stand on it a little bit, we bedded her down for the night and got ready for the first available appointment in the morning. Neither my wife nor I could sleep at all though despite whimpering a little through the night, the doggie seemed okay and just slept most of it until the morning when we gently bundled her into the car. When we got to the surgery she had an x-ray and it turned out that it was a break.. a really bad one, one of the worst it could possibly be, having broken her bone just above - and into - the knee socket. Our old dachs also has an infection that seems to have come from a bite or sting, so he was being seen at the same time, and in the end the total vet bill came to just about 6000kr (£600/€740) - but that was just for the examinations, x-ray, cast and pain medicine .. the poor doggie had to have an immediate operation to fix her leg and the vet didn't have the staff/expertise to handle it, so referred us to a specialist in Oslo. Sadly without insurance from the doggy's owner this would cost 30,000kr (£3k/€3.7lk) and we simply don't have that kind of money, nor could we raise it even if we sold everything we owned - PC/car included.
We rang another, excellent, vet in another town and was told to bring her that day and they'd see what they could do, but sadly they also said it was too bad a break to fix there. Luckily we were referred to ANOTHER vet who was confident he could do the operation and agreed to do it at cost plus some money for himself .. ended up costing us 10,000kr but the operation was a success and Orianna seems to be, for now, doing okay. She'll have a plate in her leg but since she's so young (just over a year) she may grow enough to have the plate removed after the bones have knitted together. The only trouble is keeping her off her feet for a few weeks while she mends, and even then her owner has been advised to limit - if not almost completely eliminate - any strenuous movement for two months. That's going to be tough and while everything has been heartbreaking, it does look good for now and the vet is hugely accomplished so if he thinks it's good.. we believe him. Unfortunately as we were driving back, the "check engine" light came on the car and another, costly, mechanic visit showed that the exhaust system is damaged and needs to be replaced. YAY(!) We won't be able to do that for several months and while the mechanic assures us we can drive quite fine, it does need to be done and wouldn't pass MOT/EU Testing like this.
All in all this weekend has wiped out every penny we had and will even wipe out my wife's tax-back money we're expecting next month. Double yay(!) I guess we were just very, very lucky that the vet referred us to another one that was able to perform the operation at such a massive reduction compared to the specialists in Oslo. Sadly it meant sacrificing PC upgrade cash, or arcade build this year (sorry Paul, no buildlog.. maybe next year), and my wife even had to sell her Wacom Intuos4 and her Cintiq13, but at least Ori is okay Man.. what a weekend

Guess the best friend doesn't have funds to pay it back? (Sounds maybe harsh, but it's his dog after all and accidents do happen).
That being said, I'd also do anything to get the dog fixed, but I'd do so with the thought that the owner would pay me back eventually if it was not a fault of my own.
Well, let's hope you don't have too much of those weekends

Wait what? You're looking out for your friend's dog and the dog hurts himself by doing what dogs do, and you're left with the bill? I know you said he was away, but i do hope he intends to pay you back for the trouble. Otherwise if it were me i'd never talk to the person again.

There's nothing we can do about it, they're in just as bad a situation as we are and we felt responsible.

Ah that kind of sucks, but understandable. I'd do the same tho, can't stand an animal suffering, especially not if it can be helped.

Damn, I'm sorry:( when it rains, it pours..
I remember the vets bills very well, I've been in a similar situation with my former cat some years ago, and it was pretty a terrible experience financially speaking :<
At this point the only thing left to do is try to look on the bright side of this situation (even if it's hard, given the compromises made) and go on, letting this whole thing slide. Better days will come!

Damn.
But, getting down to brass tacks, is your friend (the owner of the dog that broke her leg) going to at least pitch in on the 10,000kr for the vet operation?
Or is he even poorer than you (maybe even me )?

Sucks that all that has happened :\
You did what most people wouldn't, so at least you have some comfort in that

If I was looking after a dog and it broke its leg on my watch, I'd feel responsible too. But given the immense cost, I would've involved the owner in the decision making process or share some of the economic burden. It was very kind of you to do what you did, a real good-guy move in fact. But I think the owner of the dog should pitch in somehow.
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

I would understand it if Sabin or his wife was in any way related to the accident. But the dog did it to itself. It's not right to do good favors such as this and end up being completely raped if something goes wrong. Lesson learned though. Never take responsibility for others stuff if it there can be a end result such as this.

It was a freak accident, and the sabins were guardians of that dogs well being..
you take it on the chin just like knocking a monitor onto the floor when cleaning by mistake.
you chalk it up as shit happens.

yep, I completely agree. For me, even pitching in sounds absurd.. It's not debatable, the dog did it to himself and you've taken the best care you could. It's not your fault in any way. It's the same if the dog's appendix raptured - not your fault, not your dog, not your responsibility.
If I were the owner I'd not only be grateful to you for such good care and finding the cheapest possible vet so fast, but repay all my money for MY dog that hurt HIMSELF while you were doing me a FAVOR. I'd feel utterly embarassed that you had to sell your own stuff.
Of course, that would be a problem if I were poor, that could take time before I paid you back, but I eventually would.
I find it interesting and shocking that some of you guys believe Sabins should take the blame.
I'm pretty sure any member of my family or most of my friends would feel the same way.
Maybe that's related to national mentality ? I think that here in Poland any good man would feel the same. Polish alywas pay their debts.. unless they don't and just emmigrate

Nobody "believes" we should take the blame, just that some understand why we made the choice we did.
