Playing it. This game so far is fucking awesome!

One hour in, but still around starting zone, reading up on skills/feats. Playing on hardest difficulty, like one should. Combat seems really solid thus far.

Also, I have no performance problems whatsoever. I'm still only in the church, but I get 80 FPS - which it is capped at, and 60-70% usage on 780 Ti

I read that dropping shadow quality from ultra to high should resolve the performance problem at only a small drop in quality, though from high to the lower quality shadow settings various shadows will actually be removed altogether.
(So high is perhaps full shadows at 1024x1024 and ultra is the same only at 2048x2048 resolution? )

Oh no no no, I'd need a 290 or 780 (I'd take a X or a Ti if it wasn't for the big price increase, would avoid the Titan though even if it is the fastest single GPU model on the market - same goes for the R9 295 for dual GPU's on one PCB -, and now Titan is also available as a dual GPU model too.) to get a decent framerate in games when downsampling, it works in Dark Souls 2 since it's not very demanding to begin with but a game like this would likely see a heavy performance hit as resolution ramps up.

That hasn't really stopped screenshoters on say Neogaf from doing 8k or even 16k based shots however even if the GPU is probably burning out and the FPS is in single digits.
(Though from what I've read even that isn't as bad as bit mining when running the GPU's at 100% load 24/7, kinda makes them die faster.)

Normally I try to keep around 30 FPS when using downsampling and for AMD you are a bit more limited in that you have to either use a registry key to force the display to render at a higher resolution (Must not exceed 2560x1600 or well it's a bit higher but that's around the limit for the 7970 / R9 280X, possibly you can do higher with a 290/290X ) or you use a utility like GeDoSaTo to handle it since the display drivers do not currently allow for this feature (AMD has repeatedly shown interest in it but nothing's come of it yet, for Nvidia you have better solutions and the extremely powerful SGSSA anti-aliasing technique and it's many variations.)

This game however to get back to that, it crashes when the resolution is re-read (reset?) just after the logo videos if you try to use GeDoSaTo which is unfortunate since the only in-game alternative is FXAA and I dislike it due to the blur it adds, especially when there's no presets or other means to control the actual quality (FXAA 3.11 at Ultra as the injector did it worked pretty well I admit though I still preferred SMAA.) unfortunately the game does not support MSAA and it's limited to the DirectX 9 API.
(DX11 would have allowed MSAA - should the developers have felt like adding it - but it would have taken a chunk out of the games performance to render with MSAA active as I understood, seems DX10 and above while compatible under deferred lighting with MSAA they're also more demanding on the GPU.)

EDIT: Just look at the images I posted, there's aliasing everywhere so those are not downsampled.
(But there's no blur either so yay! - Even though I don't mind a smoother or "softer" looking image, but it doesn't need to be smeared all over the screen.)

EDIT: That guy in your avatar picture reminds me of Sanitarium, although Australian since your image has what looks like a koala in it.
(I apologize in advance if it actually is you after some horrible accident or surgery failure but I think that's not very likely, who'd use their own picture on a forum like this, although yours is pretty good and still very anonymous for that purpose, heh.)

Well, button mashing doesn't work in this at all. You must avoid getting hit at all costs.

I'm glad it did away with the roll mechanic, which imho is too easy in action games. When in shit, just roll out. Doesn't work here.

Here, what works is learning your enemies patterns, positioning yourself well, and being wise about your attacks.

IMHO one of the best combat systems I have played - thus far at least.

It did help a lot and it doesn't affect visual quality all that much, the loss is slight Smile

Performance is fine here since the game has a full SLi profile, max settings and it's 1080p60 all the way with *some* drops to the 50s, lowering shadow quality to High from Ultra fixes that. Rapes my 570s though, 70-99% usage on highest settings, dropping to around 60-70 with High shadows. Still; performance is far better than I was expecting and I think gamegpu.ru above aren't using SLi properly since their 590 results are identical to a single 570 whereas mine are near double, as it should be with proper scaling. I still remember when you were "lucky" to get 30-40% scaling under SLi back in the day, nowadays you're unlucky with anything less than 70%+

I'm going to devote some time to playing the game properly tomorrow, but I'm encouraged by the comments so far and if it's anything like Mars then I have nothing to fear. Yes, lip sync is abysmal and the game will undoubtedly be full of "indie trying to be AAA" coding funnies .. but that's okay Smile I'm liking the look of the crafting and upgrade system though, very nice indeed. There are a lot of "consolisms" though, firstly the UI; very Xbox-esque, then the default control system - and keys themselves - are definitely geared towards the 360 controller. Implementation of SSAO is also of the console variety, with the "lovely" shadow outlining everybody and everything. I'm playing with the k/m now but it feels less ideal so I think I'll switch to PS3 controller and try that.

Imho K+M works great in this.

Story and characters are the weakest points until now. That's disturbingly mediocre in comparison to how great the combat is.

It deserves at least a 6, it´s not that bad. 4/10 seems kinda dramatic.

Reviews nowadays are so worthless, they should be ignored completely Razz (unless we're talking about those 1-2 fairly reliable sites).

Most of the times games get brutally penalized because they don't look and feel "AAA" (which means nothing), especially the ones that come from less important software houses that can't afford bribing journos with free Doritos provisions.

after trying it for a while, well what can I say. it's pretty enjoyable if you totally ignore the pretty weak dialogue and story. combat system is decent and deep enough, best way to describe it would be poor man's dark souls & witcher bastard child.
