after working for a games shop i'd say the ps2 has much more chance of going faulty. the more use they get the shorter the laser life. sony did try fix it with the silver ps2 and slimline but they still regularly packed in. goes to show sony learnt nothing from the original ps1 (remember the melty plastic laser housing lol)

my ps2 still works tho, was bought 2nd hand something like 4 years ago and still managed to give me a good few months of gta sa.

xbox dirty disc error depends on the drive in it, thomson r ok, samsung better but some had philips drives and they r fking awful

i really think you need to read some support forums and articles there buddy. The Thompson drives are just god damn awful and 90% of the DDE come from thompson drives trying to play newer games. There's 2 kinds of samsung one is really good media wise one is a bit iffy media wise. The phillips r decent drives also just the burnt media compat isnt exactly the greatest. And there's hulluva lot of ppl who bought xbox v1.0 (which had thompson drives) who had a nice paper weight after 6 months. Read up on how many ppl r pissed about microsoft not doing a recall on xboxes with thompson drives.

All I can say I have a Thompson drive for years now, watch every kind of DVD Games DVD-r and not one problem.

I think the problem is people are buying the cheapest dvds they can find and blaming it on the drive, I not saying that some people never had a bad drive, but the number of times I've used my thompson drive not one problem, so thats all I can go buy!

Ps2 is king of disc read error or please insert playstation cd red screen even though there's a ps2 or psx game in it.For example..my cousin has like 7 ps2's sitting in his garage all with dis read errors or some other form of cannot read a ps2 disc.I myself have gone through enough ps2's with problems that I will never consider buying another one.I've had only one xbox that gave me any problems and that was a refurbished one.Don't even get me started on all my buddys that have ran into the ps2 problems.

Neither is obviously the king after reading this thread. Both have their issues it seems.

don't get me wrong, but i think the x360 might end up as sega....PS3 is going to be superior (again?). Most people are going to wait until PS3 is released or sell their X360 to get a ps3.
btw i never had any problems with my ps2 with a neo 2.2 modchip. it still works perfectly after 4 years

Do you really believe what you're saying? I bet you're gonna change your mind, when the PS3 will be released.

i just hope both do well, dont want any of those giant companies to get a monopoly...
Ohh and hopefully both can be chipped soon after release so ms and sony loose money on their hardware sales without getting it back from game sales

John Carmack (Doom guy) posts this:

Although the PS3 is slightly more powerfull (this is to be expected its not out over here for a year yet) the extra power doesnt really help game makers that much.

John Carmack, id Software's coding genius has in a recent interview shown on G4tv made some statements regarding the PS3 Vs Xbox 360 issue. Though this is only the opinion of a high profile programmer, his opinion should be a lot more valid than the millions of forum posts on the subject.

Basically he says that the PS3 is more powerful, but the 360 has better development tools and is his preferred console to develop for.

"I make little nitpicky decisions about say, well, I prefer the symmetric approach that MS has over the asymmetric Cell approach, but you can do great games on either one of them, and I make fundamental decisions based on development tools and depth of documentation, which Microsoft has been superior on," he added.

When speaking about the power of the hardware Carmack said that "the hardware is comparable" but went on to say that "PS3 is probably marginally more powerful, in terms of raw flops and graphic operations.”

But according to Carmack having the better development tools is more important. "When you look at these development cycles that stretch over years and years, being 20% easier to develop on is much more important than being 20% more powerful", Carmack said.
