Well, I can't say I'm too thrilled about the addition of fog of war - that doesn't belong in city management games. I would have been OK with the need to send out prospectors to find mineral/oil deposits, but a full fledged fog of war is a few steps in the wrong direction. The game never excelled at path-finding or combat, so there's no need to add fuel to the fire and gimp planning ability by fogging everything up.
Also, while I realize that Tropico originally owes its existence to the pirate era, those days are long gone. I have thoroughly enjoyed the series (3 & 4) in cold-war style Cuban dictator mode. Hell, that's what sets it apart from all the other city sims out there. If you regress to the earlier eras (colonial, ww2) that sadistic yet sexy feel of the 50-60s is lost. There's no reason to half-ass the other eras when they've got a perfectly good one to work with and expand on.
Either way, I'm still looking forward to it (and kind of pissed that I never got an invite after all the sign-up hoops I jumped through)!

The fog of war thingy is kinda weird for now, you have to 'click your palace/choose explore/click the wanted area' and then the game send (all?) your troops to that location.
The idea about prospectors (ala Settlers) would be quite nice instead.
About ERA, I didn't play enough to reach Cold War yet, but when you are in Colonial ERA you have to fulfill orders from Her Majesty of UK in order to see your mandate period extended by a few months.
In Colonial ERA the calendar shows you how long you may stay as El Presidente (like 2y 6m)
If you don't follow Her Majesty wishes : you may be dismissed.
So you actually have to buy your independence (in the form of a high debt) which is quite nice.
And once you are free and officially declared as the Only Ruler of the Island, Word War ERA start. This unlocks more political options, turns dirt roads into asphalt around main buildings, turns your charrettes into trucks, etc.
So I guess, you choose when you want to progress through ERA along the game.

Just got into the beta but after putting my key in, it does not show up in my games list and never had an option to install it. And, I can't get to the beta forums because it will take them 1-2 days to register my account for them. So, I just posted next to another guy who was having a similar issue.
