That's more about getting to work with VR and its caveats, it's not as if that won't apply to any other device
No matter what happens to the OR, for the companies who've been working with it it's been valuable experience in this new field.

It's also going to shake faith in any future Kickstarter hardware campaigns.
Potential backers will find it harder to trust anyone from now on. |
Isn't the whole point of kickstarter for it to be crowd-funded without publishers and it's ilk meddling in the creation/development?
After this move I'd be very weary from now on what I would back because what's the point if they sell out before they are even done with it?
Anywho, let's see what happens to OR after this. ^_^

To put it simply the point of the kickstarter is to channel money to the project so the project leaders can do what they wish. The problem is that people seem uninformed about what actually kickstarter is. You are gifting money and all you can do is hope for rewards, that is all.
Speaking about OR specifically, they promised to deliver DK1, and they did, plus then some.

The question I have, is how many of us here will cancel the dev kit 2 pre orders.
This wouldn't be so bad if OR wasn't crowd funded by kickstart. original backers must feel pretty let down and angry right now. I guess the $$ blinded them, can't I say I don't understand, that's a lot of money and they're financial futures are very secure now.

Well, Carmack must be happy as a pig in shit now about his decision to jump ship from ID software.

I won't cancel it, not because fb took over. But i watch what will happen with the OR and if i don't like it there's still plenty time to cancel.

Not gonna cancel.. If anything the Dev Kit 2 could be better (or at least more "interesting") than the final product now in some aspects (built in limitations / restrictions in the final product?).
Will the final version still have the USB port etc? ..built in Facebook perhaps? ;D
Even if i seem to be one of the least negative in the thread i do agree it's "shitty" against the original backers who probably didnt have this in mind or might even be very against facebook, that'd suck.. Personally i dont care, i use FB, i guess im kind of neutral, neither like it or hate it.

I didn't have anything invested in OR (since I'm a poor peasant for the moment) and we will still have to wait and see on how this deal turns out, but that sentence right there just annoys me to no end.

The Rift has probably now become a lost cause, but as an external witness who didn't invest a single dime on it I'm not too concerned, because good alternatives will start to appear sooner than we think, it's a new market after all and everyone is free to come up with valid ideas and even better implementations/projects. That said, it's sad that things went to the dogs at such an early stage..

facebook is not stupid enough to entrench shitware and a closed platform with oculus until much much later. You need a user base before you do these kinds of things. Oculus will be successful and down the line when and if it becomes closed off, that's when someone else will take the lead.

Quoting my reply to Interactive to give an example of what I mean, quoted from Gawker's Joel Johnson who gave $300 to Oculus:
"I still feel as if circumstance removed me from an opportunity to turn my speculative belief in the future of VR and Oculus's role in it into real money."

When someone gives you 2 billion dollars you can't be independent, you have to gain that money back for investor. Period.

eh, the tech won't simply disappear
it may be facebook but the tech will still be awesome
there's enough momentum in the vr movement now for it to be hacked for any future vr platform worth a damn
support for opentrack and others will surely come day 1, and from that, support for everything
