While this is a shitty sellout move by fucking imbeciles, i don't think we should worry too much. I think a second life type of game is what i'd expect from facebook.

Gosh, that's some WTF news to wake up to!!
I was always hoping that VR will stay in the hardcore gaming, quirky vr-sex and some professional areas for a couple of years before starting the inevitable, huge push into the mainstream and social areas of life.
Establish a firm core base, have people discover and experiment with the open system and let the technology/code be optimized.
Word of mouth spreads, gamers show the stuff to their non gamer friends and things take off after a while.
Its like this outcome has been anticipated and now they want to force or accelerate it and merge with AR.
I don't know if that's a good idea and I also feel betrayed of exclusivity as a gamer.
Really, not everything has to go mainstream right away, let the ignorant casuals with no sense of appreciation or understanding for technology rot for now.
Also, forcing that process prematurely and consciously could ruin it.
On the other hand if Facebook is smart they will stay away from the development and just feed them with money and let things play out as supposed to be.
Like a sleeper agent waiting in the background and when the big push comes they suddenly hold all the cards...

I think it was more of a patent grab with OR on the side, than the OR as main focus.
sar·casm | \ ˈsär-ˌka-zəm \
1: a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain
2a: a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual
b: the use or language of sarcasm

Wonderful.
A potentially game-changing technology in the hands of pure greed-driven people.
I guess it's time to build a fire and sing a couple of songs, why don't we try that?

just think of the worst case scenario:
we get an objectively awesome piece of tech to hack for use in future vr games, fecebook or not
there's way too much backlash on this for it to ever be locked down by an evil corporation
either it will stay open or new companies will take main stage and we can hack it open to their api
software like opentrack will make sure of that

I just meant that a lot of the backers were interested in the technology coming to fruition, to owning a piece of gaming history, and perhaps even to being involved in the process through their own development. My point was that the reality isn't far from academic launches in that it's just a springboard where the origins of these things are often later overlooked. A lot of people are disappointed with the news because it potentially and fundamentally alters their own place within this progression. I guess the best way to describe it is as a community which has a psychological stake ("glory") in its success. Facebook might take away some of the kickstarter sheen ("recognition"), as well.
*edit*
Sorry if I confused you, I know I have a strange way of thinking and it's difficult to explain sufficiently in a small amount of space (I'm a rehabilitated wall-of-texter)

perhaps the backing simply didn't cut it. Nevertheless, they should have been more up front with their backers. 2 billion though. I'm guessing they had dollar signs in their eyes though.

My only gripe with it that Facebook will try to push out product as soon as possible with shitty features, ie resolution latency and other things while average facebook user will be still amazed just like console peasants.

If oculus was going to become a mega success it was going to become a corporate greed powerhouse. There would be no stopping that shitfest from happening. Short term (5-10 years) we are going to get a much better oculus rift then we would have previously gotten. Long term we can all look in to the other plethora of VR headsets, someone will be direct competition with them.

The worst possible outcome I can see from this, is that it kills the technology.
If this becomes popular thanks to Facebook, there is at least a chance that some competition will emerge from this, providing alternatives, in case the FB one will turn out to be a disaster for pure gaming.
From what I understood, they intend to let Oculus VR carry on with their gaming direction with no interference, before starting to "evolve" the experience... if you are inclined to believe what they are saying.

Now I'm glad I never invested in this. Will be interesting to see how this will impact the regular games that already have OR implemented (War Thunder, ETS2, etc).
