I'm sometimes astonished that majority of people think that upgrading a PC is fucking black magic and reinstalling Windows is voodoo, the same goes for updating drivers.
This guy makes a few good points - that devs will have to develop for more platforms and that not all games will be avaliable - the rest is nitpicking.

but tbh, i'm still trying to find out which kind of people would buy a 500$ steam box and what for. cause i presume neither console players nor pc gamers are the target.

Pretty sure the target is people with lots of disposable income who like gadgets.
Console gamers won't buy one, because they already HAVE a superior console (which, really, is what steambox desperately wants to be), and pc gamers won't buy one because odds are their pc is better anyway (or they could use the money spent on a steam box to upgrade their pc)
So yeah... People who like shiny pricey toys is going to be the core market I think.

I totally disagree. Target is the console maket. When they'll find out that at 500$ they can have superior experience than on console (1080p and sometimes 60fps). And that they can now buy games at steam sales for a quarter of what they are paying now. Then the fun begins.

But if someone has a console, why would they opt for a platform that relies on porting, which means delayed releases, LESS releases, and questionable quality ports?
If a console gamer actually wanted to game on a pc, they would.
Oh, and I really question your claim of 500 bucks for "sometimes" 60 fps at 1080, where the game looks better than its console counterpart... I think you'll have to opt for the pricier models to get that kind of offering...

Their target market should be console gamers, but I have no clue who they are actually marketing these things to. Still looks like a complete cluster fuck to me.

From how I see it the popularity of a certain platform is tied to the amount/type of exclusives, and considering that PC's aren't that alluring for someone who needs a couch and a Gabepad to enjoy games, I don't see this becoming a hit anytime soon.
Personally I agree with Chiv. Those who are interested in that kind of entertainment have already bought a PS4 some months ago. Then there are the X Livebros of doody aficionados, those already own a Bone and are happy about it. Nintendo fanbois have the Wii/U/nogames, and finally there are PC users, who couldn't give a damn about this machinery. Some of them will buy the Gabepad, though, out of curiosity, only to abandon it after a few hours and go back to the trusty PS2/3/4/360 controller.

Any marketing the PC gets is a plus, but I think the guy is pretty spot on with the article.
PC: Yes. Console: No.

I think it looks a lot better now, it's great having the two control layouts and the new "haptic pads" can easily replace the analogue sticks without compromising on the rest of the input. I'm still waiting for Valve to announce a price though... and I can already guess it's going to be very expensive, PS4BONE controllers are £55 so I expect this will be more :\

That was pretty much my reaction too, though considering the PS30 ones are still £30+ and the 360 ones are £25, it's not surprising they'd still try and gouge everyone on the "nextgen" controllers too.

I think the new design is way better BUT I kinda dislike that they added another bunch of buttons at the bottom. No idea how you can properly use both the buttons and the round things simultaneously. Seems really weird to me at least, plus the buttons are so close together, not sure if that's all that comfortable.
PC: Yes. Console: No.

You wouldn't use them both together, would you? You can't use buttons and analogue sticks together on normal controllers, as your thumbs are taken up by both sticks. Same with this no? The haptic "virtual" buttons would still be applicable on the touchpads too.

Looks like it is slowly turning into an Xbox pad, next step analogue sticks. It does look better now.

I always thought the target was easy entry in to oculus gaming, they've known its been coming so they preemptively started making this new product that also pushes living room gaming.

But the thing is - there are no official PC support for PS4 yet, not official drivers with decent support for X-input interface and I'm not sure of there is any decent unofficial.

Aye, Xinput has - for better or worse - become the de facto standard for controllers on PC. Luckily MIJ has an Xinput profile (no x360ce nonsense, this identifies at the driver level as a 360 controller) and I doubt Sony will put out their DS4 drivers without Xinput support; they have to know it would cripple sales.

Anybody worried about using a diamond-button layout as a d-pad, take a controller you own, flip it around, put your left thumb on them and pretend. I did it with my Xbox 360 controller, and, surprisingly, it feels better than a lot of actual d-pads I've tried (including the d-pad on the Xbox 360 controller). I think these changes are great. It instantly solves the problem of having to use the touchpads for traditional platformers. And we don't need no stinkin' touchscreen anyway. This will definitely keep the cost of the controller down.
Now the only real concern I have is the lack of analog triggers. There are a number of games that would benefit from analogue triggers, but it's basically a requirement for any driving game. I know I don't want to drive with my only options being no gas at all, or pedal to the floor. When asked about this during Steam Dev Days they replied with "I can't confirm that it will be in the version one controller that we'll be shipping, but it is something we're working on currently.".

What's "worse" about XInput?
