Mirror's Edge - the only way for fat gamers to experience parkour Very Happy

I tried it as a kid, just jumping and running around with a few rolls there and there. Nothing serious though, I wasn't really in to it.

RB: I gotta say I still don’t understand why it’s a reboot. I know the story was a bit shit in the first one, but there was still so much room to continue on from there, take the world that was built and keep building on it. But what did they mean? Reboot? There’s that bit in the trailer where it’s action and you’re thinking, ‘Shit, what is their plan? Are they making it into some kind of God-Of-War-in-firstperson beat ‘em up?’ Which is obviously the complete opposite of what we were going for in the first Mirror’s Edge.

Rocket Chainsaw was lucky enough to see video content of the in-development game confirming much of the information provided below, but unfortunately cannot share due to privacy reasons.

- Faking nothing, the E3 2013 Mirror’s Edge 2 teaser was indeed entirely real time and generally unscripted, including the combat systems. Rocket Chainsaw has now seen both in motion in test environments, and they match up, graphically and mechanically.

- Target platforms are Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Mac.

- Reiterating statements from DICE, Mirror’s Edge 2 is a total reboot.

- Core goal of the reboot is to create an open world, living breathing city for you to explore.

- Part of this open world environment includes a persistent, “always online” component. The open world is considered a multiplayer “playground” where other plays can drop-in/drop-out seamlessly, freely choosing their level of interaction with other players and the game world. A comparison to Journey‘s online feature was given as the closest example.

- Other general multiplayer components include co-op and competitive modes, such as time trials

- Rebooting the universe means new enemies. Mirror’s Edge 2 will include many AI opponents, some on equal footing to Faith. Among these are the standard cannon fodder Protectors, melee combat expert Sentinels, and armoured gun wielding Enforcers. We’ve been told that Faith does not have guns.

- DICE has taken on a lot of feedback from Mirror’s Edge in shaping the combat system for Mirror’s Edge 2. Heavy revisions have shaped the combat away from useless gunplay and one button combats (like the nut-punch) to a deeper system that emphasises speed and fluidity. Environment interaction is also a key feature of the combat system, Faith able to push, punch, and kick enemies out of the way, over ledges, tables, and railings. These physics driven interactions are combined with 1-2-3 punch/kick style combos, wall running, flips, and other martial arts moves, as well as brief grapples. Occasionally a third person take-down move will be used when an enemy is beaten, and “adaptive slow-motion” is used vary sparingly, mostly just to highlight cool sequences, like the E3 2013 trailer face punch. Rocket Chainsaw has seen all of these combat functions performed in real time, without scripting.

- While DICE are committed to providing a deeper combat system, melee combat is not the single focus of Mirror’s Edge 2. DICE does not consider Mirror’s Edge 2 as a brawler, but instead a racing game at heart. For the development team, the focus is on creating a game all about parkour: speed, fluidity, and mastery of your environment. Even these changes to the combat system are being done to prevent issues with Mirror’s Edge where players would have a stretch of parkour with intermittent pace breaking stops to fight an opponent. DICE wishes to seamlessly integrate encounters and the combat system into the feeling of speed and parkour mastery, so players even while fighting are still on the move, making progress, and interacting with their environment.

- Its target release date is in 2016. Sorry kids. Fingers crossed it comes around earlier!

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

A lot of what I'm reading there sounds absolutely terrible. Oh well, it's not like the game is gonna even run for me, since it's on that shit engine that makes every game crawl for no reason. And don't even give me "this is the price to pay for having the game look like that" because I couldn't care less. For all I care, this should have looked the same as the first game. I would have been fine with that as long as it felt and ran just as good.

Notice that whenever they mention guns, slow motion (& basically anything derpy for this series) that they immediately get defensive? This is because they know it's wrong and they know how people will react. It will be really mind boggling if this isn't just an improvement over the first in every way.

I simply couldn't agree more. They *know* the fans of Mirror's Edge don't want "slow motion! lolz!" and "cinematic 3rd person take downs!! lolz" so it's painfully obvious they're targeting, as always, a "wider audience" >_< All they had to do was take the original and improve on it, instead it's completely rebooting into something different.

Heh, this sounds terrible and uninspired.

I don't mind them rebooting the series. I think that the story was abysmal in the first game, and maybe the only serious flaw that it had.

And before we go all lol wut lol wut about them mentioning anything with slow motion, don't forget that the original game had lol wut "Reaction Time." Although at least that was something you could mostly choose not to use, unlike this crap.

So, they decided to streamline ME.

Tell me this is now what we knew would happen. Lel.

As I mentioned few pages back - most of the good talents left original team so there wasn't so much to expect. Now I can "uncross" my fingers.

Always online, multiplayer, co-op, inevitably more combat, third person takedowns, adaptive slo-mo. Wow, everything I always wanted in a Mirror's Edge game.

It's not out until 2016, so by then Dice and EA will have mastered the art of launch-day multiplayer stability, surely.

I only hope that everything I just read is just part of some silly rumors without any foundation whatsoever. Because if they're not, then I'm afraid to say that this game is practically dead to me. Sad

It's like kicking in the nuts the entire concept that made the first game so interesting while flushing Faith (and the "faith" for a good game) in the toilet for absolutely no reason. In short, sounds like the perfect reboot.

The persistent always online world would be the icing on the cake. Laughing

The always-online stuff isn't even what worries me as I'm certain that, sadly, that's the future of games and there will be no skipping it unless you're willing to quit gaming altogether (there's always a choice). I know I would just adapt to it. But those rumored gameplay changes sound just awful

Mirrors Edge really needs some new ideas, i always thought the first one was super linear, they even painted the route for you :S
It looks cool in an artistic kind of way, but i never understood why people praise it so much, since the freedom is not there, and parkour should be all about freedom of movement.

Except none of the things listed for the sequel are new. They're overused and clichéd features that appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Their need to prefix or follow some features with conservative terms like "sparingly" shows even they know how many people know about those. Theyre almost scared to even talk about it.

The combat improvements don't sound too bad actually, aside from the slow-motion thing, but only if they aren't also planning to greatly increase the amount of combat encounters to show off those improvements (which they probably are Sad ). I also wouldn't mind Journey-like multiplayer, but it certainly doesn't justify the game being always online. The damning part about this for me, weirdly enough, is the third person takedowns. For fuck's sake, isn't the whole point and idea of Mirror's Edge to provide you with an immersive first person parkour experience? Out of all the games that decided to incorporate that useless "feature" lately, this one makes the least sense.
