"Seriously! has a bit of a follow-up to the recent report of a new IP in the works at Serious Sam developer Croteam. They have an outline of what Croteam is up to from CEO Roman Ribaric that includes a little more on the still-unannounced project: "Roman described it to us as a mixture between Portal and The Witness, which would make it a first-person adventure puzzle game. And according to Jubert this new game is going to have a type of humor that is very different from Serious Sam. This game is also slated for 2014 but with no specific time frame." "

It’s hard to talk about Serious Sam 4 without giving away spoilers, but for fans of the franchise, we can make comparison with Second and First encounter: what TSE was to TFE, that’s what SS4 will be compared to SS3.

TSE is my favourite SS. Very Happy

Script will be written by one of the writers of The Talos Principle.

We are proud to announce that Jonas and Verena Kyratzes will be writing screenplay for Serious Sam 4! As you know, we already worked with Jonas on our critically acclaimed title The Talos Principle, and now we decided to extend the scope of our relationship to our beloved Serious Sam franchise. But Jonas brought in his secret weapon in form of Verena Kyratzes, and they both started shaping the story into something really awesome (not to say “blockbuster-y”).

Why even bother? I can't remember the previous SS games having a good story, or one at all.
So i, as a player, would not expect future games to have a good story.
They should invest their money in better gameplay. As SS3 was pretty crap.

SS2 had a bit more elaborate cutscenes and story. And SS3 had some terrible lines.

But even gags etc can be part of the screenplay. Also descriptions of enemies etc in Netricsa.

Doesn't mean they will be writing 1000 pages but a good screenwriter can make even a few lines have an impact.

I know it wasn't popular but I really enjoyed SS2. Never took itself seriously and some of those weapons cracked me up (Parrot bomb going lalalalala before exploding Laughing )

1 and 2 are still amazing.

I see what you did there Laughing

Bet seriously (ok, I'll stop it now): SS games don't need a good story imho. What they need are ultra-cheesy and over-the-top remarks from Sam, like there was in TSE. That game's plot is non-existent, but Sam's one-liners cracks me up every time I replay it.

I haven't got to play The Talos Principle yet, but I've heard very good things about it. I also don't really care about the story in this series and what's been there has always been pretty weak. However I don't see why they wouldn't bother with it. The fact that it's been weak up until now is exactly why they should bother to improve it, granted they actually want to do that and it seems they do. Good as far as I'm concerned. And no, SS3 was not crap, not overall and not in gameplay.

It would feel a bit weird but definitely intriguing if Sam went from burping and shouting booyaa motherfuckers! to being a pensive killer who constantly faces existential dilemmas and philosophical matters. I for one would embrace the Serious Sam Principle xD

http://www.dsogaming.com/news/serious-sam-4-will-use-photogrammetry-motion-capture-will-push-even-more-enemies-on-screen/
Quote:
Croteam revealed some new information about the fourth upcoming part of the Serious Sam series. According to Damjan Mravunac, the Serious Engine has been upgraded and Serious Sam 4 will take advantage of photogrammetry and motion capture.

Serious Sam 4 will be set before Serious Sam 3 and as Alen Ladavac noted, the game – thanks to the success of The Talos Principle – will pack some new features no one is expecting and no one has ever seen before.

Oh, and remember that “immortal scorpion” copy-protection from Serious Sam 3. Croteam hinted that a similar copy-protection system will be present in Serious Sam 4. After all, a similar feature was used in The Talos Principle as those that were playing the pirated version were getting stuck in an elevator.

Croteam also claimed that in Serious Sam 4 it will try to pump up all the best characteristics of the previous games to the extreme. Therefore, Croteam aims to go over the top with the number of enemies that will be present on screen, as well as with the game’s open world environments.

Last but not least, Croteam aims to get away from the dark and monotonous aesthetics of Serious Sam 3. The team wants to make the game look more realistic, but at the same time make it easy on the eyes with lots of pretty colours and high quality image fidelity.

In related news, Croteam has also confirmed that Serious Sam 4 will support the Vulkan API, and that it will be powered by a much improved version of the Serious Engine.

Serious Sam 4 to be demoed at this year’s E3
Quote:
Devolver Digital has revealed that it will demo Absolver, STRAFE, Shadow Warrior 2 and a new title from Croteam at this year’s E3. Now what this new Croteam title could actually be? Well, the official Serious Sam FB page has – possibly – spilled the beans, hinting at an official reveal of Serious Sam 4.

As Croteam claimed in Facebook, things are about to get ‘serious’. And naturally, the official Serious Sam FB page shared that post. So it’s almost certain that this new Croteam title is no other than Serious Sam 4.

Serious Wednesday update!
Quote:
- Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope “Shanti” update is now finished and will become available right after internal testing. The update will include the new planet (Shanti), new weapons (one melee and one long ranged -weapon), new feature (Sam’s personal shield) and a very scary new boss. Boo!
Yes, there will be SSVR: The Second Encounter and Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE!
- Yes, there will be The Talos Principle VR!
- Yes, Serious Sam 4 is still happening and our core team remains hard at work on this, while two much smaller VR teams will continue to grow and work on more VR projects.
- No, we haven’t forgotten our “flat” games. We’re announcing Serious Sam Fusion 2017, a FREE update for all owners of Serious Sam games, both flat and VR versions. This update will be rolled out gradually, starting with The First Encounter, and then The Second Encounter and Serious Sam 3: BFE.
- Serious Sam Fusion 2017 update will bring a common workshop for cross-game mods support, as well as enable multiplayer between “flat” and VR versions of games, among other things. So, if you have Serious Sam VR: The First Encounter and your friend has The First Encounter HD, you can connect and play coop or versus with one another – using Fusion 2017.

Quote:
Here’s the complete list of Serious Fusion 2017 update features that will become available in ALL of the games, for free:

- All games now support SteamOS/Linux/OSX!
- Split-screen!
- 64bit executables
- Support for Vulkan API (DirectX9 is now being removed; so long and thanks for all the bugs)
- Multithreaded rendering
- The new “lightweight” savegame system; savegames are now saved much faster, are very small and stored in the Steam cloud, and savegames still work even if a level is changed in a patch, or if a mod is updated
- Full support for all controllers including Steam controller, PS4 gamepads, all older DInput joysticks
- Proper multimonitor support
- Borderless window support
- Customizable sound outputs
- Proper 3D audio using a proprietary sound-mixer (the same approach as used in the old Classics games)
- Improved physics engine with better handling of character movement
- Texture streaming in all games
- Much better modding support with customizable weapons and items, improved scripting (including better support for scripting networked games)
- Lots of other improvements, optimizations and fixes
- And last but not the least – we will now be able to more easily ship updated code towards all these titles more regularly!

One of those things I've wanted to see more of when it comes to gaming, updating the earlier games with the newest engine improvements.
(Unity Engine kinda made it a requirement though for getting critical engine bugs fixed... Razz )

This isn't really feasible though so that Croteam is doing it (again.) for free (again!) is pretty damn impressive. Very Happy

One thing is for sure: They indeed support their games long.

BUT, instead of countless remasters of the same 2-3 old games, maybe they should focus their time on the new game(s) Embarassed

Yeah they did something a bit different with Talos Principle at least so hopefully they'll show more such projects instead of sticking entirely to Sam "Serious" Stone although now the perfect opportunity to do that Serious Sam 2 update they never wanted to. Razz

Eh I'm hoping they'll announce some additional titles eventually, they must be doing pretty well if they can afford updating their earlier games like this at least not to mention several years of ongoing support and updates to nearly every game they've released.

Talos Principle is still active and with every game now using the same platform or well, engine, there's a chance of seeing even more support for nearly everything using the "Serious Engine" or "CroEngine" or what it was actually called.
