Oh, they are genuine. Also, they aren't dumb. Their ideas are utter buttfuck retarded, but people aren't retarded just because they are spoonfed falsehoods and not taught to critically examine them.

I always have to remind myself of this. Even if I call these guys idiots sometimes, I have to realize that they are not idiots. Only their ideas are idiotic.

Maybe you're right. I do agree with you. But right now I'd rather punch their dumb faces. Laughing

Oh, I have moments when they say things that make me want to shout their hair off about just how wrong they are, but then I take a deep breath, and switch to the people who were responsible for their "education". Very Happy

I can't stand it when people don't understand what theory means... They always think that whatever someone makes up is a theory...

Saw the debate live yesterday night... I just cringe every time I hear a person going on about creationism. It's a travesty. I really don't know what is wrong with these people (the so called educated ones).

Even Saw Bill Ney getting more and more annoyed/mad with each passing question getting a reply by ham with: 'well there is a book out there who says how it became/works'.

If you want to check it out:

"how do you explain a sunset, if there is no god ?"

how can so much stupidity stay alive ? She must be too dumb to breath lol.

oh and this one :

like tim minchin said, i hope they think like that about the theory of gravity the same and .. just float the fuck away Smile

Also the bible and creationism aren't theories. They are science fiction and story telling.

I can't watch that. I don't ever understand how these creationist "scientists" can take themselves seriously.

Yeh it's hard to watch tbh. Just wanted to see if Nye could hold his calm and nope you can see on his look he gets as furious as I sometimes get. Thankfully we don't have that idiocy that much in West-Europe.

With debates like this, it's best to put it into the background and listen to it while playing a less attention-required game (or play it on another screen if you have multiple). That's how I managed.

EDIT: anyhow, the debate is being discussed here. Smile

You sound like James Randi
Well, thanks I guess. He is one of the few people I look up to (even though he is several feet shorter than me by now Very Happy hope I can make it to an Amazing Meeting before he goes). Although I get this sentiment from other people, not from him directly. Seth Andrews and Brian Dunning to be exact. Both of these guys keep saying that these people, who are always called religitards and delusional idiots by the wider atheist community, are in fact honestly good people who just have viewpoints that are in opposition to my ideas.

Not sure about Ken Ham personally, but the wast majority of fundamentalists in the US are in fact genuinely good people who try to help. They honestly fear for the eternal soul of people and that's why they are loud and obnoxious since in their minds, they are trying to save people. And this is the same reason why loud atheists are also out there annoying people, because they want to see others not be bogged down by bronze age superstitions. I may not agree with the fundies, but I at least see that their intentions are good, even if their starting point is flawed from my point of view.

But it's hard not to get annoyed and start calling people names. The more outrageous the belief, the harder it is to stop denigrating the believer. But I try. Razz

I mostly boil over when they use their religion to persecute and try to strip other of their rights (homophobia is a very current issue).

Well, remember just how defensive and vile internet people get about games they like. Say a single bad word about their current favoritest-of-all-the-whole-wide-world-of-all-time-ever game (or simply say that it's "just ok") and death threats start flying around.

Now imagine if it's not a video game, but your entire world view and outlook on life. Simply saying that you disagree can feel like a colossal slap to the face. Even if it's a simple "excuse me, actually I disagree".

People seem to like this book. Might worth a look. Very Happy

http://www.amazon.com/Manual-Creating-Atheists-Peter-Boghossian/dp/1939578094

Although I'm uncomfortable about the title, the few podcast interviews I heard with the writer, it sounded like a decent introduction to debating theists and get them to listen to your arguments and not run away.

God bless the US of A!

Was lucky enough to be born in a country that rarely has such opinions from ordinary people, BUT, while religion is practiced, it's usually just a routine, saw your mother going to church when you were little, just like she saw her parents as well. However, there are a few rotten apples out there and the church goes basically unchecked since they're building a big ass church right next to the Casa Poporului, and that should say a lot about where we hold religion, in relation to the church state separation. Oh and they took money from the latest, new Bucharest metro line to build that horrible church. And I can't say I'm an atheist without getting a few strange looks even though deep down, those people share the same beliefs as I. And I was forced to learn religion in high school. Matter of fact, I hate this stupid country for that...and the other issues we have. Sorry for bitching, I guess I needed to take that off my chest since I can't discuss this with anyone I know, here.

This is the one I like answering the most when people ask me if its why I'm atheist, because its so hypocritical:

 Spoiler:

I tell them "No not at all I have no fear of anything supernatural, but you do, you are the one telling people to fear his wrath. And to live your life devoted and focused upon worshiping him and following his word to the letter for fear of his judgement and where he will send you. I have no worries or concern for that at all."

Asking me to believe in a god just so I can 'learn' to fear his judgement, is as silly as asking me to believe in the boogieman when I don't and you do. Just for the fact I can go to sleep scared like you do.

haha pretty much.

And the guy there going "thermodynamic laws..blah blah.." obviously don't know the laws..I've had a few bring it up too, as "look at me I IS SMART!" type of rebuttal trying to use science to disprove science, and I ask them what the 1st and 3rd laws are..and they stumble and get a lost took.

Explain to them earth isn't a closed system, and the sun is an energy input into the system, they start getting deer in headlights look, as if they are going "hey hey I didn't say I UNDERSTOOD the 2nd law, or what it means, or how it applies or doesn't to the earth, I just heard from someone it broke it..don't explain it to me..that was my only good 'smart hat on' argument i have, don't ruin it!"

What I find curious is the fact that not even Italy, which is more religious than USA, would allow these completely insane 'theories' to have such an important media coverage and impact on people. You don't see creationists publicly sponsoring anti-rational thinking, there aren't schools that "teach" you that stuff.

We have a more personal concept of religion here, more intimate and dynamic if compared to USA's where everything needs to be sensationalistic and uber-narrow minded. People still believe in their flying men, but they also receive a proper scientific education..so in the end christians and atheist can perfectly coexist and rarely you see passionate debates. We have nutjobs here as well of course, that goes without saying, but still, the average level of stupidity isn't that high just yet.

(When it comes to politics though, we're worse than anyone else on the planet, except maybe for some central African countries xD)
