I am also considering getting rid of mse... I reinstalled win7 again and forgor how much faster every folder loads without mse. When I am entering a folder full of apps installs, mse checks everything and it loads slowly...
Even pc boots faster and icons don't reload on boot.
Just as Ixi said. for past year or so, MSE have only been annoying. Nothing but steamapi cracks blocked over and over.
I like its integration in windows and all but even with realtime protection turned off, the boot icon reload takes much longer with it just installed...

Why not just create folder with Games and put all your games into that folder and put Games folder on exclude list?

Really? MSE doesn't seem to effect my folder load for me, and I got some with a tons of files and folders in them.
Sure its not spinup for going into a folder on a disk not accessed in a while, and you have a spindown time setup?

That would only happen if you download games from skidrow website.
EDIT: Maybe perhaps your hard drive is failing or something else is causing all of this. I never had problem with MSE/Defender

I only scan my C drive. my games/music/storage drives I dont I know its clean. and all my new downloaded goto C until I figure out where I want it.
My logic is if it made it onto my machine and scanned, no reason to scan files that are already on my machine over and over..and if it get infected, when/if I load it MSE will fuss since its picked up on execution.

no. its not THAT drastic. nothing is failing. I ger fantastic speeds on both my ssd and hdd. Its just that there is visible difference with/without mse. I will prolly install it anyway, because I am to scared to go on without antivirus.
And whats with windows defender ? I see that name in windows and I can't seem to find it. Is it some background windows av ?

it should be in your control panel listed a 'windows defender'.
Ive never used it myself. no reason to run them both
Q: Is Microsoft Security Essentials (XP/Vista/7)designed to replace Windows Defender?
A: No but if you are running Microsoft Security Essentials, you do not need to run Windows Defender. Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to disable Windows Defender in order to manage the PC’s real-time protection, including anti-virus, rootkits, Trojans and spyware.

I really like Windows Firewall Control. Only if someone released the Plus version. Bastards are asking 30 bux for it.

You are confusing two companies. The one linked by shole is made by Sphinx Software while the one you linked is from BiniSoft.
Totally different software.

I use BiniSoft myself so I would not know. Looking from the screenshots the other one has more more features built in.
Maybe shole can shed some light .

Sphinx's Firewall is excellent. I'm using it to allow/block based on full exe path rules.

Shouldn't it be "still downloading viruses regularly? "
MSE may not be the top of the line AV software, but its easy to install, out of the way, updates with windows silently, and does what it needs to long as you are somewhat trained on how not to do things on the internet..
I mean sure I could get a fully involved firewall with rules, setup my router for full protection, a AV software that does it all, but its a bit overkill.
Not like I click every "you won an ipod!" banner I see, open emails with exe's, and have 1000's of people trying to backdoor exploit their way into my home network everyday. Taught my kids the basic rules of not being an idiot on the internet, slapped MSE on the 6 PC's here in the house..and been fine overall for years.
My point of view is if someone you know needs something more than MSE and maybe malwarebytes or such because they keep having problems, they need to be taught how to use a PC and internet smarter, not better protection:P

Ok, but then you rely on common sense, not MSE. You'd be fine with any non-intrusive antimalware or with occasional scanning.
MSE used to be good but now every new threat is targetting it, as soon as something malicious runs, it disables its service and the fake antiviruses sometimes fake MSE appearance.

OH yea, I totally agree. a little common sense goes a long way.
I dunno how many times my aunt calls me in a year telling me she got another virus. I get there, and its some malware she got off opening a "here is that file you wanted" exe email
Shes owned a PC for 15 years now, and still does retarded stuff.
Shes the type to email herself webpage addresses to bookmark them. Or like when she asked why she couldn't print to her wireless printer at a friends house, 10 miles away...since it was wireless it should work right?
Short of cutting her ethernet cable, and telling her she too dumb to use the internet. not much would help her..lol
Why I always saw AV software as self defeating on the more obscure/better types. Anyone knowledgeable enough to know to use them, are usually the ones smart enough not to need the better ones expanded protection.

Why use second best (or in this case one of the worst) AV products? There are others that are free and better in pretty much every way. I think 2008/9 was the last time I had a virus, and that was my own fault for doing something stupid, but I'm not going to use an AV that misses so much malware that it constantly comes in last in all independent tests.

Because Im lazy, and use ninite.com for reinstalls to install software after windows is done. and MSE is the decent choice between MSE,avast and AVG. (as far as popups bugging you, offering to let you buy it if you want, and annoying update messages etc).
Also because I never really need to worry too much about viruses other than the odd malware malwarebytes or superanti finds.
I see it like having sex. Sure if you are poking everything that walks around without caring, buy the good brand condoms and double wrap it to be on the safe side. But if your with the same girl and know what your getting into, any old condom will do because your not worrying about catching the bad viruses, you are just doing it as a precaution
Im not saying others should use it over different ones if they like the other types. There are a lot better ones out there, Just works fine for me. Only reason I use one at all, is because my kids are on the home network with me. If I was on my own, I wouldn't use any.

Yea its trustworthy, I've used it for years.
It's amazing. pick all the stuff you want and one click install. It auto unchecks all the adware/bar crap any of them want you to install and does it all for you.
I got one with like 14 things on it. I start it, click one button. they all install and do their thing.
You can suggest new programs to add. I think the only requirement is they ask the software dev if they are ok with it.
A few i used the devs didnt like it auto installing and bypassing the "do you want to install X useless toolbar" and ask it be removed :\

My Kaspersky Internet Security license's about to expire (11 days~)... Dunno if there's any other antivirus with firewall BETTER/FASTER/PERFORMANCE than the one i have... But ofcourse being able to tell it what i want it to be on or not (actually the only thing on is the Firewall...The file protection n stuff is off for better OS load and performance along the "DO NOT DELETE THE FUCKING CRACK!!!" stuff..)
Ofcourse,free or "Free" (Yarrrr edition)
I've seen like Bitdefender this,NOD32 that... but BD it's been said that makes startup damn slow (maybe even with SSD) or something.. NOD32 with it's random licensing crack probs updates or something...
Last resource is another license for KIS...Any help?
Thanks in advance.

That's cause it's not catching anything you may have lol. MSE used to be GREAT, but starting like mid-years of this year they just fell way off the wagon and kinda just stopped caring. There was another couple new tests to refresh who was good and MSE fell way to the bottom. Bitdefender and Kaspersky have been neck to neck for months now.

I'm using NOD32 after previously using Microsoft Security Essentials. It's the best product I've encountered so far. As for the whole licensing business, I have no idea, as I have access to legit licenses. But as long as you can make it work, totally awesome.
