Xbox 360 Emulation Is Coming Along Well, Says Dev Team

Quote:
Since the Xbox One doesn't allow you play your old Xbox 360 games since it lacks backwards compatibility, you may be able to find an alternative in a Steam Machine. Yep, PCs may be running old (and new) Xbox 360 games sooner than the Xbox One.

According to the lead developer on the Xbox 360 xenia project has recently made some promising comments about emulating the seventh generation console from Microsoft, noting on a hacker's thread [via Reddit]...
“Author here. Yeah, the readme is meant to scare off people. Even with it I still get people on IRC or email asking me if they can play game X or where they can get a copy. The note about no downloads is for all those who download 360 emulators from shady YouTube links and such - there's a surprising number of fakes packed with malware and viruses floating around.

“Status of the project is that it's coming along well, after a long period of inactivity. Many games get to title screens though don't draw much. I'm really hoping AMD gets its shit together and releases Mantle soon, as that will make emulating the GPU related things significantly easier.”

This is pretty slick news.

Sony was smart enough to think a way around the backwards compatibility conundrum by introducing PlayStation Now, something they've shown a great affinity for bringing to the public light, so much so that they even demoed Beyond: Two Souls running on the PS4 at CES 2014. If they weren't going to do it someone else would have... like with the Xenia.

Both the Xbox One and PS4 are running x86 architecture – a change from the Cell and PowerPC sets they were using in the PS3 and Xbox 360 respectively – the change disabled any brute force emulation for the previous generation's software. Sony took that opportunity to spearhead a digital alternative with PlayStation Now... Microsoft, well, they dropped a lot of buzzwords and talk about an “all digital future”.

Where-as the Xbox 360 had light backwards compatibility when it launched, and the same could be said of the PS3, the lack of that feature for the Xbox One and PS4 has created quite the stir of tumult in the gaming community given that there aren't a lot of games available for either new-gen console. This gives the Steam Machine a huge level-up on the competition... assuming the Xenia team can get a working emulator out there in time.

In addition to being able to stream PC games between host/client PCs, the Steam Machine's ability to work as a standard desktop enables it to emulate past games as well. The ability to emulate Xbox 360 games would essentially, and theoretically, mean that the Steam Machines would be tapped into being the “all-in-one” media entertainment solution a lot more than Microsoft's own Xbox One. This looks even worse yet, given that Kinect is completely compatible with PCs, meaning that even the motion-based Xbox games could still be played on the Steam Machine.

Nevertheless, full emulation is still a ways off and you'll need a pretty hefty rig. The whole concept of the team making enough headway to get some games to boot to the title screen while running natively on the emulator is an awesome thing. Maybe the news will get Microsoft to act a bit quicker in offering a solution to Xbox One owners for backwards comopatibility, because right now the Steam Machine is looking like a beautiful $500 option for anyone who not only wants a lot of power and performance from their living room solution, but a diverse and extensive library of both PC and Xbox 360 games (amongst many other libraries of emulated platforms)

Likewise Smile I've got a 360 and I don't have sixteen NASA supercomputers daisy chained in order to run FFXIII at 5fps, so a 360 emulator is of no importance to me right now. I would *love* a classic Xbox emulator though Very Happy

Great stuff! Especially liking the fixes for BGDA2, the more fixes we get for the Snowblind engine games the better! Just keep hoping for gsdx fixes so we can play in hardware mode and not horribly slow software mode.

the latest revision 5878 adds Anisotropic Filtering.
GSdx: Anisotropic Filtering.
Adds anisotropic texture filtering (1x-16x) to the hardware settings. Enhances the visual quality of textures that are at oblique viewing angles.
Anisotropic filtering is automatically disabled if: 8-bit textures are enabled.

After some tries, I can definitely say that Shadow of the Colossus is 100% playable here (i2500k@ 4.3Ghz/8GB/GTX570). The framerate isn't consistent, but 45-50fps are enough for the game. There are some minor glitches that I fixed by enabling the Half-Pixel Offset hack, the rest is good. Very Happy

Double Agent sadly is still so-so. It's playable, but far from being optimal.

Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence on the other hand is almost perfect, smooth even at 6x Native/FXAA, and barely no glitches if we exclude some minor black textures in certain areas.
The graphics* are still pretty good, too:

Awesome

just a quick update on Anisotropic Filtering on pcsx2,its wasn't working correctly on 5878 its been fixed now.

GSdx: Anisotropic Filtering.
Fixes a small oversight on my part. Which was setting the maximum anisotropy to (0,1,2,3,4) respectively, instead of (1,2,4,8,16). So when you selected x16 for example, you were actually only getting x4 >.>
Corrected now, and you will be getting the full x16 when selected Smile

I recently tried to find such an emulator before I realised that there's very few worthwhile Xbox games that didn't get a PC release. Xbox 360 has quite a lot more games never released on PC.

Yeah but I have a 360 so emulating that is secondary, I no longer have my classic Xbox (but oh so loved it!)'and would love PC versions of Jet set Radio Future, Phantasy Star Online Eps 1 and 2 (iirc the Xbox version is superior to the GameCube one), Shenmue 2 (with English VA) and quite a few others. I remember having incredibly fond memories of a game I never finished, it was a cyborg procedurally generated dungeon romp RPG, called Metal Dungeon, loved it Smile Not to mention Project Gotham Racing (so good!), Dead or Alive 3, Panzer Dragoon and Digimon.

Oh! And Mercenaries as well, far better than the sequel and the Xbox had more characters than the PS2 version.

Thanks for the feedback! Black, Ico, Okami and GoW are in my list as well, it's good to know that everything's fine these days. The last time that I tried to emulate them (years ago) I still had the dual core and there were several issues as well.

aside for few games like Ninja gaiden(which have ps3 version) and fur day remake there is not so much point of an Xbox emulator most are already on PC/ps2 so how many games you actually miss? I will rather to have one for 3ds ,ps3 or 360

Yeah but unlike FFX, those *don't* have updated assets, so PCSX2 is the best option for those Smile I'm still impressed by the additional detail on the FFX models.

Think I might actually have a play of Ico on pcsx2...it was the first game I ever tried on pcsx2 when the emulator first came out...it didn't run well at all..infact if my memory serves me right it was completely unplayable..how things have changed...
