Quote: | Even more problematic, the game simply doesn’t run very well. I have a Galaxy S3, which is not the latest phone from Samsung but it’s not chopped liver, either; any time my phone does anything, or gets any kind of notification, the game slows to an absolute crawl. Even in the course of the game, such as when fighting against a load of enemies or casting a spell with effects, the game becomes borderline unplayable and makes my phone literally hot to the touch. |
Yup, I knew it was running piss-poorly, it was dodgy as all hell on my Ion and I tried, I really tried, but no.. I can't play it like that, randomly stuttering and hitching is not a fun experience. I'll wait for the iOS version if it ever comes. SE's latest twitter excuse was "before the end of winter" so yay, could be another two months.

game runs silky smooth on a galaxy s4 here, and tablets are usually many times faster so you won't have any kind of performance problems.

I don't get it. I've never played this game, but from what i see the updated models look, well, updated. I don't see whats wrong with their art style as it very much looks like the original.

if the sprites so bother you guys,MAYBE, the game can be modded to "fix" the problem.
don't know how modding works on android though.

Proportions, perspective, style. All different and, I'm my opinion, significantly worse. Made even worse by the lack of shadows cast by sprites, which makes them look like cheap stickers on high quality backgrounds. |
the main problems are perspective and lack of black outlines like in original sprites, hence it looks vaselined.
generally sprites have black outlines to separate body parts from each other, while the new sprites only have a black outline around the sprite itself.

Aye, I noticed that too. You lose definition and it makes it hard to look at, especially the new "absolute" perspective too, which is front/back/left/right whereas typical FF sprites, and indeed most pixel art sprites, have a sort of slanted perspective that makes it look like the characters are standing at an angle. It's charming and shows more detail/character, something lost on these. Just look at all the sprites from all the 8/16bit RPGs and you'll see how they look, it's even like the old scrolling schmups like R-Type, when the ships scroll down or up the screen, they rotate slightly and it gives depth to the sprite, unlike earlier schmups that used absolute perspectives that make the images look static as they move.

also now when i look at it, the colour palette is lighter and more washed out, it looks like they had the original colours and then went over it slightly with an eraser.
definitely weird and sub-optimal design choices.

Cool story, bro If you wanted discussion about the game, you should have started one rather than expecting everyone else to conform to your demands. FFVI is twenty years old, whatever there is to say about the game itself has already been said over and over, so what is left for those of us that HAVE played the game is to discuss the various ports and to reminisce about everything else. In this case Zeel and I, along with others too, were discussing an aspect about the port that appeals to and interests us; the aesthetics. Once I've played the port for myself I'll happily discuss more of it with anyone that wishes to, but in the meantime what bothers me is the visuals.
If you haven't played the game and want to discuss something about it, do so, start talking and if others are interested they'll join in. See, that's how discussions work, someone broaches a subject and others join in, instead you come along and demand that they stop talking about something YOU don't like and instead demand they talk about what YOU want.
How horrifyingly self-centred of you.

Not played it for any length of time on my 2012 Nexus 7, but it seems... Okay. Compared to the SNES version, the translation seems a bit clumsy (come back Ted Woolsey... Cooooommmmme baaaaaaack ), and it doesn't seem very technically proficient - there's some slowdown on the intro, the "walking into town" scene (no Mode7 background! ), and a bit of slowdown just after that scene, when the 3 characters enter the town and the view is top-down. To be sure, my Nexus 7 is an old model, but it's still a Nexus 7. *pout* (Oh, the slowdown might be crack-related? Unlikely, but still...)
Oh, also, I did some digging and it appears to be the GBA version, mostly. The translation is apparently from the GBA release, and it's got the censored Celes torture scene.
All-in-all, it's not worth the £10.99(!), they're asking for it, but it's probably just about worth £3 or £4. I'm considering whether the redesigned touch-screen controls are worth it, or whether I should just play the emulated version on tablet.
Oh, and, yeah, I'm using the root-less version I mentioned above.

Now THIS is interesting, thank you! I haven't seen a hybrid version of FFVI yet, they're usually based on SNES or GBA versions, the latter lacking the Celes torture scene but containing the new Espers/spells/translation.

Ok guys can we calm down please?
@rgb#000: Fine, you think it's irrelevant to discuss about the sprites, others don't. Why do you even bother giving a smirky remark?
----
Having said that, the new sprites look terrible. They have been drawn in a low resolution, then upscaled, blurred (with something like 2xSAI) and the ugly borders come from the dark background as there is apparently only 1-bit alpha masking going on. They basically did everything wrong and the main reason for this seems to be greed/laziness.
Sad.

Oh, just re-read this, and I think I might've worded it badly. What, I meant was that it is censored. It has the censored version of the torture scene, from the GBA release.
Sorry, my fault. (Been up since 5am. )

Ah damn, actually I think I misread it too >_< That's a shame, it would have been nice to see the "definitive" content version of the game,I'm surprised there's not even an IPS for the SNES version that brings over the GBA additions and refinements. There's plenty of patches and hacks, but not a GBA-style hack, not as far as I know. Thanks Pixie!

Where did I warn you? Where did I say that you breach any rules?
I see Sabins outrage coming from your bait, that's why I asked everybody to calm down.
If Leo's or Tonizito's messages feel baiting to you, please feel free to report them and I will gladly look into the report, just like I look into anybody elses report.
And just calling people anal retentive for discussing the horrible sprites isn't very funny dude, maybe they would've laughed at your joke if it was a bit funnier

There's been some chatter concerning the iOS release, SE just put FFIV and TAY on sale with the text "Final Fantasy VI comming soon to iOS" added to the sale text. TA seem to be anticipating a release this Wednesday or Thursday. Just chatter though.
