ITS SOCCER DAMNT!!
I dunno, it makes more sense being called footbal, but being raised in NA, the term football conjures up a different image. Not a buncha guys in shorts rather a 350lbs linebacker
Now, I have a question....where did the term soccer come from? seriously? like Im sure early americans and canadians were told its football when they visited europe...and footbal makes sense as ur kicking a ball with ur foot where as i cant think of what soccer would mean or how u would come up with that when the original name is so basic and very descriptive of the action...
EDIT - I tried looking this up at Wiki, no luck, but i did find something interesting on a different site, but no luck with the specific origin of the word soccer.
World Soccer Origins
http://www.soccerhall.org/history/world_soccer_origins.htm

The Eskimos played aqsaqtuk or soccer on ice. Balls were stuffed with grass, caribou hair, and moss. One legend tells of two villages playing against each other with goals ten miles apart. There is no known date of origin |
What kinda idiot thought up that game? ur in the artic tundra so lets invent a game where we have to run around in our thick clothing, and lets make the field HUGE so we all have heartattacks on the first drive to the opposing side's net....
EDIT - Well, I answered my own question
Wordorigins.org
http://www.wordorigins.org/wordors.htm
Quote: | Soccer
Soccer is an abbreviation for Association Football. The Football
Association was formed in London in October 1863 when representatives
of eleven clubs and schools met in an attempt to standardize the rules
of the game. One of the rules prohibited the carrying of the ball, a
rule that would lead to the Rugby-oriented clubs leaving the
Association several months later. The name Association Football was
coined to distinguish it from Rugby.
By 1889, the abbreviation socca' was in use, and the spelling soccer
had made its appearance by 1895 |
Interesting....

just so u know over 1.3 billion people play football. there is no more than 300million people in yankland so I think its pretty obvious which 'sport' (if u can call yankball a sport!) has the biggest following
