|
 |
Quote: | Somebody needs to say it: Google is getting too big. When one organization controls so much of the infrastructure of the digital economy, it’s not good for consumers. And when it has such an outsized influence on the resources flowing to inventors, programmers, and entrepreneurs, it’s not good for innovation.
Like almost everyone else I know, I’m a heavy user of Google services and technology. Unlike most other people I know, I report on Google as part of my job. So I think about the company a lot. And I worry that the future in store for us—if Google gets a pass from regulators and consumers and continues on its path of insatiable growth—will be a lot more monochromatic than the company’s colorful logo.
The news this week that Google has acquired Nest Labs for north of $3 billion in cash was my personal tipping point. I’m looking at Google and starting to feel that this Silicon Valley success story—and the resulting concentration of wealth, brainpower, and ambition, not to mention data—has gone too far. It’s time for consumers, politicians, regulators, journalists like myself, and members of the innovation community to start pushing back on the company.
Google has many vocal critics, and in a way I’m late to the party. For years, I dismissed the concerns of groups like FairSearch, a coalition of Google competitors alleging that Google’s behavior in the search marketplace is anticompetitive. Because FairSearch’s membership includes companies like Microsoft and Expedia that have their own search businesses, the message always sounded to me like sour grapes.
But now my worries go beyond Google’s 67 percent U.S. market share in search (compared to Bing’s 18 percent and Yahoo’s 11 percent—November 2013 figures). The number that really bothers me is $56.5 billion. That’s the amount of cash Google had on hand at the end of the third quarter of 2013. It’s the fuel for a series of acquisitions that threaten to undermine market-driven innovation and consolidate a huge chunk of Silicon Valley’s engineering talent under a single corporate roof. |

Skynet comes to mind.
I don't know the technical behind search engines but search engines for both Bing and Yahoo are total shit. Not sure why people are complaining if companies keep making shitty products and trying to sell it to people.
But also if big companies Google/Apple/Microsoft keep offering higher and higher incentives for smaller startup, why not sell it? Nest Labs just sold for $3bil in cash but I was never interested in their overpriced $250 thermostat in first place.

Yawn.
They make a lot of money, why shouldn't they expand. At least they use their money wisely, and don't pay out billions to the CEOs while the rest of the company goes downhill.
They do a lot of very inovative research regarding autonomous driving, medical gadgets (the recent blood-sugar testing contact lenses) and even wire up towns with optical fibre internet, something all the providers don't do because they don't want to spend any money in infrastructure.
Sure, this helps them in some way to reach more consumers, but at least they give back and try to do great things. Our data is what they analyze and use to offer better advertising, which is how they make money, and we all know that.
The only things I am slightly upset about are that the European market (and probably anything non-US) is always a bit late to the party, and the cancelation of Google Reader.
Also, Google Maps and StreetView is the best thing ever, and I couldn't imagine living without those tools anymore.

Maybe they're big because they make products people like? Just a wild theory.

Not to mention that their search engine isn't getting better either.

iPhone and iPad
edit: Also the MacBook Air which was since copied by numerous other companies.
They may only be trends, but if you look around, smartphones have changed alot of our daily routines. (Not judging here)
They may have reached their zenith though, and their closed down OSes will certainly be their demise but this thread is not about Apple as I recall and making one company bad doesnt make the other one better.

you are right, i dont want to start a flamewar or anything, just wanted to point out that google constantly tries to innovate in different ways and invest in new areas, instead of just milking old products.

Ads? Fine with me, that's how they make their money. |

You upset about that tiny issue? I haven't been able to use adsense for 2 years now, since spambots ravaged my website and google thought i hired them to click my links
Asif i had the money to do something like that in the first place
Been trying to dispute it for 2 years now, but without getting an inch further.. It's like talking to a brick wall, but unlike Google, the wall might actually reply to you before they do

the fact is that google is indeed too big and has too much power in gathering private info interesting for even more evil corporations
and stating that it doesn't matter because we use their services for free is a joke! the google users became the product and the price we all pay is far too high!!! i am willing to pay yearly fees to companies who respect my privacy and digital habits. i am already looking forward to initiatives like https://beta.startmail.com/ which will charge fees meanwhile respecting my rights
for example, mailboxes, we all use it daily, a annual fee of 25 a 50 eur is perfectly acceptable

Well, if you are actually serious about depending less on google with your private data, try ownCloud. Host it yourself, have your contacts, calendar, files, and who knows what else they support by now in your own private "cloud", accessible from the web.
And running your own mail server when you already pay for a web server shouldn't be a big issue either.
Me, I just hope Google won't turn evil any time soon.
