Yeah I read that RPS article the other day. Doesn't sound overly promising. I especially don't like the sound of the random swap to some other group. I don't recall ever hearing about that before now. My impression was that the first chapter at least was the story of a single caravan. The lack of a strong narrative to tie everything together seems odd given the nature of the original pitch.

Everything I played during the short snippet I saw was brutal. The combat is unforgiving and challenging, marching from A to B is a crawl, and the characters are worn-down husks. It’s a hard land, filled with hard decisions. While it thankfully gives you the time to mull over your choices, that doesn’t make them any easier. If this is a taster to only the first chapter in a planned trilogy, I have high hopes for Stoic’s Nordic adventure when it comes out January 14th. The sun may be stuck in the sky, but things don’t seem to be getting any brighter.
only good things about this game so far

Yes, it's like the artstyle of a kiddy animated tv show. If we're talking about isometric 2D, I prefer baldur's gate, fallout, diable, that kind of style.
This looks cheap to me.

Didn't see it mentioned before in this topic, seems you can now pre-load the Steam version of the game.
(It's 2.1 GB.)

It looks the absolute opposite of cheap to me, these are some seriously skilled artists. Reminds me of the best 70 - 80's cartoons, nothing like the cheap crap they make today (with the exception of some japanse animés). Will buy just because of the fantastic art alone.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-01-14-the-banner-saga-review 8/10
Quote: | The Banner Saga offers a refreshing take on the tactical RPG with a story every bit as engaging as its combat. It is a beautiful game filled with ugly choices and tough consequences. While this crowd-funded instalment stands as a complete experience in itself, it deserves to sell well enough that the planned parts two and three might come to fruition. I don't envy the hundreds that have suffered under my ineffectual command, but it would be a shame not to see the saga through to its end. |

Quote: | Despite all of my gripes, I enjoyed at least half of my time with The Banner Saga enough to have come away from the experience with fond memories. It’s a shame that where there should be urgency and drama, there is instead an unforgiving slog through a world of fading splendour. I found the hardest difficulty too frustrating but would recommend playing on normal rather than easy – even though there are difficulty spikes, overcoming them brings about a surge of satisfaction that is entirely lacking when every fight is a walkover. |

Yeah, sounds like there's an issue with the highest level of difficulty which isn't balanced correctly, but normal should be ok-ish from what I gather. (whereas easy is.. too easy)
