Yes? And we've known this for months already. Thanks?

I didn't. First time I read about the thing. That's just me summing up what it is and being unimpressed. You're welcome though.

So in some cases, there is a marginal lead for SOS and in other cases Win8.1 takes a substantial lead. In practice, it doesn't matter.

What does matter is how good an OS is outside of gaming performance. Here is where the scales tip overwhelmingly for one over the other. Laughing

Totally lost track of what info goes where... This is about Steam Family Sharing, so... Ah, screw it. Here you go:

Quote:
We’ve made a change to the way Family Sharing works in the most recent Steam client beta, where lenders must now identify the Steam users who may access and play their shared games on shared computers. This allows lenders more control while reducing the risk of VAC or other bans resulting from an unknown user accessing and abusing shared games on an authorized machine.

Family Sharing is now a two-factor authorization process, where up to ten Steam accounts on up to ten machines may be authorized to share your library at a given time. Any of these ten users may log into any of your ten authorized machines to access and play your shared games. Additionally, users may still request access to your shared library by sending you a request from any machine where you've installed games.

To authorize up to ten family members to share your games, visit Family Sharing settings using the most recent Steam client beta update. Our FAQ have also been updated to reflect these changes.

Here are Valve's 12 Steam Machines partners (so far)

Thus far, the only third parties we know of that're making Steam Machines are iBuyPower (pictured above) and Digital Storm -- today, that all changes. Alienware, Falcon Northwest, iBuyPower, CyberPowerPC, Origin PC, Gigabyte, Materiel.net, Webhallen, Alternate, Next, Zotac and Scan Computers are among the first companies signed on to support Valve's initiative, Engadget learned this afternoon.

Indeed, they are like PCs completely reduced to gamers needs. I'm just curious about the cooling in some of these things. Because thats the part that always held me back from building a small gaming rig myself.

Nothing for me though, I still prefer gaming on my desk monitor. And then, I can have more PC for cheaper.

I thought the point of the Steam machine was that it was going to bring some sort of uniformity to PC gaming, now there are multiple makers, configurations, GPU brands etc, so apart from the OS itself (and perhaps cheaper hardware?) everything's still the same?

The point of the Steam Machines is to shut up, enlighten and even convert the ignorant littering neogaf ( Laughing ) with posts like:

- A gaming PC is big, noisy and ugly. Incorrect: these PCs are designed to "fit" in the living room.
- A PC cannot possibly get connected to a TV. Incorrect, these PCs will get marketed as PCs meant to be connected to a TV.
- PCs do not support gamepads. Incorrect, not only do these PCs come with a gamepad, but they come with the world's first gamepad that will work with any PC game ever made, even those that do not support gamepads.
- You need mouse and keyboard just to launch a game. Incorrect, these PCs come with SteamOS, an OS that hides itself and you don't ever need to connect a mouse or keyboard to play.
- Don't you need like a $5000 PC (with $1000 upgrades every 6 months) to barely keep up with the unstoppable power that are the nextgen consoles? Incorrect, you will see $500-700 PCs (and the prices will only go down) that will either come close, match, or exceed the performance of the consoles.
- Like I would feel like hunting down drivers to run every new game. Incorrect, SteamOS will do all that as invisible as a console downloads and installs updates.

And so on.

It's a dispelling of the couch, HDTV, gamepad, performance, cost, ease of use myths of PC gaming. But also a good solution for those that already know a PC can do all that, but don't feel like building their own.

So wait, these are basically pre-built computers that come with SteamOS and the controller with it.

So I'll just skip the "buying a steambox" and go straight to dual-booting the OS and getting a controller instead. ^_^

As far as I'm aware, the SteamOS performance improvements that GabeN promised aren't present in the current version. So if that doesn't change in the coming months, I think you can safely skip the OS too. Maybe get the controller if you really want it for your comfy couch experience.

Nah, in that case I'd just stick with the 360.
I was more hoping for actual improvements with gaming in that OS since it would (hopefully) only run the essential to get games working.

I'm not interested for now as I'm ok with my beloved anticouch machine, but is it me or these prices are a bit off? Razz The CyberPowerPC seems adequate, but the rest..not much.

And 13 different models, this will confuse console players even more xD
