Criterion Developing Need for Speed Title for Release in 2010

A trusted source has revealed to Primotech today that EA subsidiary Criterion Games, responsible for the long-running Burnout racing series, is currently developing an installment in the Need for Speed franchise, due out for release in 2010. The announcement came during an internal presentation by John Riccitiello at EA headquarters in Redwood City last week.

When asked for comment, a representative for EA told us that “right [now] we’re focused on Need for Speed World Online, SHIFT and NITRO.” Need for Speed: World Online is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online racing game, in development at EA Black Box, which will launch later this year. Need for Speed Shift and Need for Speed Nitro are two distinct titles in production at Slightly Mad Studios and EA Montreal, respectively. The former, arriving on all major platforms this September, will be aimed at simulation fans and features more realistic racing gameplay mechanics. Nitro is an arcade-style racer that’s exclusive to the Nintendo Wii and DS late this year.

Black Box will return to the series with a new Need for Speed in 2011.

Interestingly, Shift producer Jesse Abney told VG247 last month that he thinks Criterion would be a “great team to work with on that stuff,” referencing the development of Need for Speed.

Criterion has been producing downloadable content packs for its open-world racer Burnout Paradise since the game debuted in 2008. It does not currently have a publicly announced new game in the works.

Ironically none of the current NFS-games in development are made in-house, which may very well mean at least one or two of them will be good.

Those 2 pics are Fake... you can see that those pics are assembled from several other NFS Promo-pictures.

There are no "real" information about the new NFS-title yet.

strangely enough those two have nothing in common, nfs was always about racing on some exotic tracks and running away from cops, it's all went down hill after NFS5
shift is just another race game with nfs tag strapped to it for marketing purpose only

NFS1, NFS2, NFS3 (despite name) and NFSPU had very little to do with cops - they were always about driving exotic cars in exotic locations. Those are gone for good. On the other hand, you had this nonsense that started with Underground after that silly Retard and Furious shit came out, and all the NFS after it were complete crap (except maybe MW, which was somewhat OK). What is even more hilarious was Underground 1 & 2 gave you some stupid Subarus, Hondas and other Japanese junk I see all day on the streets IRL. Laughing
Shift on the other hand I liked, it was again about driving, not this vinyl "yo yo" bullshit.

So considering neither Underground series crap nor Shift had anything to do with original NFS games, I want what I liked the most out of those - another shift.

shift has completely retarded physics, they just laughable, u can hit someone from the back and they will fly into the air most of the time Laughing
it's neither arcade nor a sim
u2 at least had decent arcade physics and cars sounded great, besides i'd take subaru's, honda's and other jap junk any day over overpriced ferrari's, but that's not the point, they just tried to copy one of simbin's racers with very bad physics and engine sounds and added nfs in front, it could've been called SHIFT and it would pass like any sim wannabe

but i rest my case now that when Criterion developing it that it won't turn out the way shift did, hope it will be all that Burnout Paradise was and hopefully better

Shift felt great on the other hand. Smile

FAKE!

Burnout developer Criterion has rubbished leaks sprung this morning about the new Need for Speed game.

"NFS stories on the net today - 100% FAKE," Tweeted Criterion.

Those reports claimed the game would be called Out of the Law and set in a fictional San Francisco known as Sun-Bay. Police cars would apparently be unmarked and racing was to be focused on street cars rather than expensive sports cars.

Source: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/criterion-rubbishes-nfs-leaks

EA confirmed last November that Criterion is making the next instalment of Need for Speed, but so far that's all we know.

That's that then.
