|
 |
Hey guys,
For my birthday, I got an i5 4670k as a present, along with what I assume is a decent mobo. Anywaaaaay, due to budget constraints at the time, I resorted to the stock CPU cooler seeing as how I was literally broke. Did some gigs, got some money, now I can afford both a new air cooling CPU and a new case.
Online reviews seem to praise the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, and so does the reddit circlejerk. I hereby come to the humps for advice in this matter, I can't make my mind based on reviews alone.
Also, the new case is going to be a Zalman Z11 Plus so I assume there's going to enough clearance for the cooler.
Thank you in advance.

meh air cooling is so ancient, u can get some decent not expensive water cooling right now for under 50 euro or so and never worry about airflow
especially if u have something decent like a zalman case

And it cools better than an H40. The only closed loop cooler in that range which keeps up is the Seidon 120M and that is fairly loud. Nothing that can't be fixed with a couple of better fans though.
Don't tell me you actually have a closed loop cooler btw Mort, nice waste of money if you do on that CPU of yours.
@ Claude: Noctua DH-14, Phanteks PH-TC14PE would be better choices than the Evo for air.

Closed loop not worth it?
How many people actually use open loop evaporation cooling vs closed radiator?
Or you meaning open vs closed as in custom vs all in one? Custom ones 99% of the time are closed looped types too.

I have a Cooler Master Hyper 412S (air) on a i7 with an overclock of 4.3ghz and I'm hitting 28c, 62c load, best cooler I've had to be honest.
dust.

I'm talking an all-in-one, closed loop liquid cooling system. Corsair H series, NZXT Kraken, Antec H2O, those things.
A custom loop is a custom loop and they are never called closed loop, because you can get to the reservoir and (re-)fill it. You can also easily drain the loop, change coolant, swap tubing, swap rads. None of that is easy with the all-in-ones, that's why people call them closed loops
I personally do have an H100i, because I didn't want another big fucking tower in my case. Costs more than an equally capable air cooler would've cost, but it's worth it to me. I'd do a custom loop if I could be bothered to do it, but I fiddle with my PC too often and a custom loop would be too time consuming (don't have a lot of that ).
My remark was mainly aimed at Mortibus, recommending a closed loop cooler (and a bottom end one that's not particularly good) when he's got a goddamn 3550 which is fine on the stock cooler.

Think it comes from people using the terms wrong.
Closed is any system that relies on a closed (closed, but not inaccessible) loop of cooling without lost of coolant being part of the process. Like a cars radiator is a closed loops system, but you can add liquid to it. Any system where loss of coolant isn't part of the process of cooling is a closed system. If the intended usage is to heat the coolant, cool it without losing any, and reuse it its a 'closed' loop.
And open loops system relies on evaporation of the coolant for the cooling using a cooling tower, like a Water well AC house system. Or the shower head mister, into tower spray type water coolers. letting the evaporation of some of the coolant where its exposed to air outside the loop, cool the remaining coolant.
Or open loop can also be a in/out system of fresh new water is always supplied to cool the system..like an extrusion cooling sleeve. where the water pumps thru, and is discarded.
Spoiler: | |
Anyway getting off topic
For a cooler, I really like the 212 if your going air, got my son one and its kicking some ass. hes is overclocked a small bit. but idles at around 32ish, load at 56ish.
Sure I could have spent more and got maybe 29 and 50..but Im not worried about 'lowest C I can get" long as its well within the tolerable range, and not in any danger at all over getting warm. Its good to me.

Well, the Noctua is REALLY expensive here, costs 25 euros less than a H100, which I don't want, if I go liquid, ima go custom. Or, well, anything that's not self-contained, no matter how attractive and popular, but that is not the case YET, the system needs much more work done before that, VGA card, SSD, HDD, pretty much everything save for the mobo/cpu/ram. The Phanteks is nowhere to be found here. The Cooler Thermalright HR-02 Macho Rev. A seems to be more decent choice, it's ~15 euros more expensive than the Hyper 212. I still need to figure the clearance between it and the Z11 plus, though I'm sure it won't be a problem, the Z11 Plus sides are bumped a little, improving clearance.
As for the SSD, can't afford any as of right now, I have the budget for a case and CPU cooler, it hurts just looking at that sad, boxed cooler with this beast of a CPU. SSD maybe in a month or two, maybe even more, depends what the current gig is paying in the future.

Wow.
I mean...Wow
The 212 is not bad in any way, it's just that there are better ones. How about say, a Thermalright Silver Arrow? Or even True Spirit?

I can't find the Silver Arrow anywhere, the SB-E Silver Arrow costs pretty much the same as the Noctua and the True Spirit 120M just got picked for a final confrontation.

Up until a few days ago, two NHD's were my salary here
I won't go for Noctua, despite how absolutely great they are, I just can't afford them. I mean, I do, but there won't be any money left.

Thermalright HR-02 Macho Rev.A here. Absolutely good price/performance. May not have that 1-2° less then absolute premium, but its pretty much silent and very powerful for the price.
It keeps my 3570K in a perfectly fine temp range at 4.5Ghz. (I'm not home right now, but will deliver some recent measurements in the next days.)
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

I was thinking more along the lines of 4.0 - 4.2 GHz, seeing as how Haswell is hotter than Sandy/Ivy but it's good to know. Well, I guess this is the best purchase I can make in my budget, it being the Macho Rev. A. Can't wait for both of'em to come home, it's about time I got rid of this stupid old case. Well, not really stupid, it's just REALLY hard to clean, Lian Li has always been a tad "over-engineered", if I may.

i have some old antec h20 620, bought it for 30 euro about a year ago and yeah unlike some i prefer my inner space to look as less clusterfucky and full of towers as possible
it never hits more than 50c @3.5ghz and my fans are set at 1000 rpm push pull and i have some cheap miditower not a zalman uber tower or something that costs 100+
i do not overclock and total silence to me more important than 5fps extra

The Zalman Z11 Plus costs 65 euros here, and I consider it an uber tower, Zalman is really cheap for what it offers.

I could get the Z12 and get rid of those awful LEDs.
Also, the Carbide 300R costs pretty much what I'd pay for both the case and cooler. I agree, the Z11 looks awful with those cheeks but it's really great, on paper, for the sum I'm paying. But again, I could wait a few weeks more, since I'm in no rush and get myself a Corsair beauty.
