Whats the difference??

Was going to get a Venice Core AMD 64bit 3000+ for £85 then I noticed a Newcastle Core AMD 64bit 3400+ for £100

Whats best ???

I did notice that the Venice is Socket 939 and the Newcastle was Socket 754

Would it be best going for the 3000+ Socket 939 so my motherboard would be good for future Processors ??

you're buying a new CPU without deciding on a mobo? well as u said they kinda go hand in hand.

i'd go for a a 939 bit I also wouldn't go for a 1.8ghz. save up and get 1 that will last a while.

Get the venice and clock it up to ~2.6Ghz.
But if you can find one. Definetly buy a Opteron 144 or 146 with the CABNE stepping.

Venice 2.6Ghz+ = Impossible to tell, depends on the individual chip. Below that, most certainly.
Nearly all Opteron CABNE 14X iv'e seen managed 2.8Ghz with stock cooling AND stockvoltage. That's a hell of a chip i say! They are basiclly underclocked FX57s.

Venice for sure. NewCastle is old core.. Venice supports SSE3 and has some enhancements to reach higher core speeds (DSL with SOI technologies)..
