The movie is good, but too damn long. I watched it in 4dx (movement, sound, smell bla bla bla). Imho they shouldn't have added all the Tauriel stuff. I liked it, but I wasn't blown away. I still think lotr is miles ahead this movie...

For the first time ever I walked out from the cinema very disappointed. This is by far PJ worst movie to date. The whole movie felt like a fellowship vs bilbo filler. The idea of the director from pacific rim making bilbo now doesn't seem that bad.

some "fun" things to notice:

rive scene, notice the POV shots from a gopro camera, takes you out completly from 48fps/3d
missing gold textures while Thorien is riding the gold stream (no joke)
missing sound from smaug stamping in the treasure chamber

The orc leader in laketown was inches away from killing legolas but instead he walks away?

Stephen fry is a fat unfunny comedian.

In one scene with Thranduil you can clearly see the blue lense outline in his eyes :\

And yeah, those shots with a gopro were really not necessary...

Liked it well enough. It does much more with the dwarves than the book, so that's a plus. Some of it is a bit forced, like the romance, but it's better than literally 'nothing at all'.

Was hoping for a bit more Stephen Fry, was refreshing to see him in a bit of a villainous role.

And of course the best thing in the whole movie is Smaug. Perfect sense of scale (pun half intended Razz ), amazing CGI and animation. Wish Cumberbatch's voice was less distorted though. It's a waste to have him if we can't tell that it's in fact his kickass vocal cords doing it.

What really sucked was the gold stream. Among all the ridiculously spectacular visuals, it looked incredibly fake. Sad

Also, wonder where they hid Colbert. Jackson's cameo was a bit of a chuckle. Razz

That's why it was a chuckle. Did the same thing but with a bit of self consciousness. Very Happy

Yeah, Colbert was probably in Laketown, most likely just as an extra in the background. I wouldn't be surprised if he was cut out completely anyways. Smile

But knowing him, he'll smuggle the scene into the Report somehow. Laughing

Colbert was in Laketown, he's the first guy they show that's spying on Bard, signaling the rest of the spies. Also, he has a eyepatch.

I remember the character, but didn't recognize him. Gonna watch out the next time I see it. Very Happy

EDIT: checking imdb, seems he managed to get two of his brothers into the same sequence as spies. Very Happy

Keep that scene in mind and you can clearly see it's Colbert, even though he does look a bit more rough, he isn't really concealed heavily with makeup or clothes.

No way! I'm not watching anything below 720p these days (well in very few cases and not that much below). I hate how long it takes for movies to show up in proper releases these days. Still so much left to wait for this... Sad

Because The Hobbit was shit (as a Tolkien film - and redundant as a fantasy film) and everything I'm hearing about this sounds like what I hate about Jackson's new style of ignoring Tolkien and adding superficial teenage battle scenes and farcical humor.

Although they could have dropped the fattie barrel roll, the rest of the movie is amazing. Especially the encounter with Smaug, which was epic to say the least. I honestly don't see much difference between Lotr and Hobbit other than the epic scale battles and such.

I'm sure you don't and that's ok.

FoTR was an amazing film that stayed true to the material and which didn't add anything that bothered me.

TTT was when it started going downhill (Legolas surfing, endless Gimli burpy humor, abysmal Eowyn, etc.) - but I still loved it. RotK, however, had too much crap and messed up too many things from Tolkien.

That said, I'm a HUGE fan of Tolkien and I have tremendous respect for his creation - so I'm naturally not happy about changes that go counter to his spirit.

I feel the same way about the new Star Trek and the new Sherlock Holmes crap coming out.

There are few things that I admire and respect that much when it comes to the entertainment industry - but Roddenberry's original vision and Conan Doyle's character of Holmes are definitely among them.

That's why i prefer Roddenberry's Andromeda over Star Trek ^^.

Anyway, FoTR was maybe the truest to the book, but it was also the most boring. TTT and RotK were much more entertaining.

The Hobbit was just bad on all scales. Story, action, characters, just all of it didn't fit together.

Very little can compare to the experience I had with FotR in the theater. TTT and RotK didn't entertain me on the same level - but it's true that they had more spectacle.

They did have some fantastic scenes though - and I even loved the Elrond to Arwen "peptalk" scene Wink

And love triangles.

ā€œFor the record, when I took this job, in 2011, I made one stipulation. That’s it. I just said… I swear to God, I said, ā€˜I will not do this film if you will not guarantee me one thing. You have to guarantee me there will be no love triangle.’ And there wasn’t. For the whole time I shot. For a year of shooting there was no love triangle,ā€ Evangeline told Access Hollywood when we asked her at the film’s recent Los Angeles junket about how in ā€œThe Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaugā€ she has a blond and a brunette to choose from, just like Kate did on ā€œLost.ā€

ā€œAnd then, I came back for reshoots in 2012 and they were like, ā€˜Well, we made a couple of alterations to some scenes and we added a couple more scenes,ā€™ā€ the actress continued. ā€œAnd all of a sudden manifested a love triangle before my very eyes and the film was shot and I’m in and there’s no getting out and there was no escaping it.ā€

Yeah, that was the most idiotic part in this film imo. Her character doesn't even exist in the Sillmarillion/Unfinished Tales/Hobbit/Lotr world! -.-"
