Here we go again with the same old bullshit
The US has import taxes and duties just like we have in Europe - from China too. There's no VAT in the US, but let's have some fun with that, shall we? I'll apply the 21% VAT we get in NL on the conversion from Google.
iPod Nano 7 16 GB = $99 = €72.70
- With VAT: 1.21 * 72.70 = €87.97
- Difference: €72.03 (almost TWICE as fucking expensive)
Surface RT = $200 = €146.88
- With VAT: 1.21 * 146.88 = €177.73
- Difference: €172.27 (almost TWICE as fucking expensive)
Nexus 7 2013 = $220 = €161.56
- With VAT: 1.21 * 161.56 = €195.49
- Difference: €54.51
Nexus 5 32 GB = $340 = €249.69
- With VAT: 1.21 * 249.69 = €302.13
- Difference: €96.87
iPhone 5 16 GB = $649 = €476.61
- With VAT: 1.21 * 476.61 = €576.70
- Difference: €122.3 (price in NL Apple store = €699)
Those differences are not taxes and duties. Electronics don't get taxed very heavily here at all. I've done something similar for games in another thread - games get *ZERO* taxes and duties and yet the difference is just as ridiculous. Pure greed is what it is, they can get away with those prices here.

LG Nexus 5 16GB - €442 with VAT
because we're the poorest country in EU

Mchart wrote: | Some of it likely is greed, but you can't say it's GREED!!11!! if you can't even show how much of a tariff your country/EU is imposing on these goods. |
Sure I can.
http://www.dutycalculator.com/Hscodes/hs-code-for-iphone-5s/
0% in most countries, US and NL both included. Same category is applied to tablets as well.
iPod for example then? Sure:
http://www.dutycalculator.com/Hscodes/hs-code-for-ipod/
13.9% (copyright compensation, basically). So let's calculate again for the Nano, shall we? 72.70 * 1.21 * 1.139 = €100.19. Means they still add 60%. And that is assuming Apple's prices are with sales tax in the US (never ordered from US Apple store, do they add state-specific sales tax when you check out or is that price exactly what you pay?).
That site isn't always 100% up to date, but they get their data from the official listings. I.e. http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds2/taric/measures.jsp?Lang=en&Area=&Taric=8521900090
So no, Mchart, it's not fucking taxes and duties. It's greed.

Depends on the state and the local county/city. Buying a product in downtown New York is more expensive then if you bought it in Montana where they have zero sales tax.
So at the highest end you've got around 8-10% and the lowest you've got nothing.
Still far cheaper then the EU though. I never said you guys weren't getting fucked. (I live here, remember?) I just said that your various taxes and increased bureaucratic fees don't help.
For more and more online purchases in the US they are starting to charge sales tax based on your credit cards zip code. Personally, I believe there should be sales tax for online purchases given how much people purchase online these days. The state and city needs to pay for services somehow, and it's bullshit that these little family owned stores are being shut down because they can't match online prices that don't have a sales tax.

No, but that doesn't take away the ridiculous margins they use here, nor justify them. Especially not since for a lot of those same companies, Europe is a secondary market. Often enough we don't get the full product here, yet pay more. And there's fuckall we can do about it

Don't have to do anything special. Just box it up and on the customs form just put some bullshit like 'Cooking book' and send it off as a 'gift'.
They don't have the manpower to check every box in detail so it will likely get through without paying customs.

WTB such a thing, no companies whatsoever are willing to label anything as "gift" :l
When ordering random stuff from Ebay from China, they seem to bubble wrap and ducktape the package so hard I haven't had to pay taxes for once yet for any shipment that has come from China.

my tips are if its new equipment (like a phone) take it out of the box, get rid of the manuals , anything you dont really need. so its not considered new. also when labeling it dont lie about whats it in, they dont open every package but they scan it, so when you ship like a videocard name it "spare electronic parts" , mark it as "gift" but dont set the worth to 1 dollar or something , set it to 15 dollars ( important is to keep it under 22 euros cause anythign above is not tax free ).
havent been caught in 10 years, and when the euro was like 1,60 dollar i once had my friend mail a whole computer worth $1000 so it has been battle proven.
Also it depends what country you are in , some are more strict/thorough
from the stories i read UK is very lax, Belgium semi strict , Germany quite strict ( having to pay taxes on a single vinyl record etc )

Germany is pretty hardcore with customs. They actually seem to inspect the stuff and they also require that ridiculous big ass form to be included with detailed descriptions of everything inside the box.
