I for one dislike F3 for numerous reasons: It's ugly, the city of DC is bleak and feels half-assed (rubbles rubbles rubbles, oooh metro lines, rubbles rubbles , more metro lines, rubbles...)
Felt beta-ish and pretty lame actualy.
But then New Vegas came out, and I came as well. Super fun, various locations with great designs, colorful characters and twisted plot that actually get you involved. Everything felt really polished and it was a tremendously fun experience, had a real basis for mods and general replayability.
But both of these games miss something of the original fallouts, something that could easily be added in the new engine and setting without a problem, but I can't quite put the finger on it.
I think it's that impression of dirt and how everything and everyone is miserable that lacks...

Definitely pointing to boston as the location (assuming it's all legit and not an elaborate prank)

i dont care where its set unless its another fucking desert western wasteland
is boston a desert wasteland? or can we go back to the motherfuckin post apocalpytic industrial cities and outlying towns i love so much.
i enjoyed nv, it was a great game, but the setting.. ugh... it just wasnt for me. if i could have fo3's setting and backstory (world setup, etc) with fonv's gameplay mechanics and story telling, it would be one hell of a game.

I guess I must be in a small minority of people who think that most Obsidian/Black Isle games have the same level of hackneyed, kinda shit writing as almost every other game.
For some reason everyone could see it with Alpha Protocol (a game I enjoyed in spite of its incredibly, offensively bad writing), but that's about the only time.
Not that I'd complain, it's passably-acceptable... And, sure, it's in the upper echelon of shitty game writing, but not really worth the gold-plated dropped-from-the-fucking-heavens kind of praise that it gets.

Boston must mean the Commonwealth and above all the Institute. Maybe we'll finally get some scientific and global insight into the Fallout universe instead of the constant limited local adventures.

IIRC they explained somewhere (?) that at least some of it was intentional - game was made to resemble James Bond level of bullshit, with all obligatory facepalm additions this genre had developed (sure, the latest approach with Craig is not fitting that cliche *perfectly*, but it's also pretty new itself). I doubt many would make an argument Bonds or other examples of I'm-a-dick-suaving-superspy include quality writing, sacrificing this stuff is some sort of an entry fee.
So what made people see "it" with Alpha Protocol, exclusively, could simply be Obsidian emulating bondish approach, for all good it did in the end. Can't use this excuse when talking about F:NV, but then again I've yet to see a convincing argument it's on the same level with AP in writing-related departments.

Idk, i deeply enjoyed Neverwinter Nights 2. The characters are awesome (Khelgar ftw!) and the story is not that bad. Btw i'm replaying it right now, and all i can think is "why can't we have this with a next-gen coat of paint?"

Read through all the comments and link trails and you'll see convincing arguments for both sides. Personally I'm avoiding it all together because it seems like a time-sink and I remember getting burned when I got super deep into similar shit before HL2's release. My web experience tells me it is BS (or at least that it's not for Fallout 4) but I also know FO4 is coming out, I just don't see this being related (a mod makes far more sense).

i'm 99.9% sure its legit. You know how the corporate suits are... They would've taken down the site for the Vault-Tec logo alone, just in case.

Ah, sounds promising. In all kinds of post-apocalyptic settings I tend to favour research-themed storylines that deal with figuring out what the state of the world is and how it's likely to progress rather than local, savage-level power struggles.
