I have sold my xbox and very soon my ps3 will be gone to make room for a PS4. Now as i assume it's correct the ps4 will not support external drives or media types like mkv ect..

I need a little MKV player to connect directly to my HDTV. I don't need or want streaming capabilities just purely plug a drive into the player and watch my MKV films and programs.

Can anyone recommend such a player?

Raspberry Pi is a very interesting idea. However wouldn't it need a power supply keyboard?
This is for my living room where I have just the tv consoles ect. Not sure how I would control the pi?

I was thinking more a cheap player where I could just plug my external hdd into and control via a remote.

Don't need a powered keyboard and I can use my RaspBMC with my TV Remote just fine aswell.
My Raspberry takes the power from the TV USB and the only other cable is the HDMI going to the TV.
I think it would be the perfect choice for your needs aswell.

That was what I wanted a complete unit ready to go. I have been reading that none of these players support 10bit playback. I don't know anything about encoding and what it actually means.

That's it garus I don't know if I have any! I've never had an issue with many mkvs on my ps3 so I never looked closely at the way they are encoded. I guess they can be converted to 8bit if needed?

10bit usually won't play on anything but a PC with decent hardware.
Most of these media player low power CPUs can't do it.

For me that's quite annoying as I watch a lot of anime and a lot of that is coming in at 10 bit, also anime movies and such.

Yes you can reencode but it's a hassle.

Other than anime I have not encountered 10bit encodes so far.

It's looking like the Roku or WD live player is a simple all in one solution and will work out cheaper and easier than the Pi. There's also an easy way to convert the 10bit files, and it seems the peoplereporting 10bit are anime, which is of no interest to me at all.

Lack of 10 bit support shouldn't be a huge deal. I think the only 10-bit videos I saw were some animes (and using 10-bit for those still seems pointless to me).
No one encodes movies in 10-bit, since even Blurays don't support it. There are barely any true 10-bit sources to use out there, unless you include some raw professionally recorded/encoded material.

What videos do you have in 10bit 1080p?

"All" (read: many) new anime releases.

Smaller file sizes. That's not pointless since well the very purpose of a rip is "to maintain good quality with the smaller file size possible". Razz 10bit helps with that.

in this day of age owning a media player is pointless , even the most cheap smart tvs have a media center that can play mkv, avi, dvix, flv

Except in cases when you didn't happen to buy a TV with those features, and don't want to actually buy a whole TV again just to play those files Razz

Also, not sure what the situation is now, but when I checked last, not every TV supported all the necessary formats properly. DTS support was kinda rare, for example, which would exclude a whole lot of mkv movies.

I have a WDTV Live in my room for streaming the occasional show and a Mede8er 500X2 with HDD in the living room as a movie/series database, both are awesome for what they do (streaming vs storage). They play any file format, though the WDTV seems a bit more choosy and both have a lot of features. Power of the units seems good enough, though I tried high bitrate remuxes only on the Mede8er.
As for TVs playing mkvs, I have a high-end TV and I switched to the mede8er. Not all TVs do DTS, the ease of use of a dedicated machine is not even comparable to a TV and it's all a lot smoother.

I've got both units used, for less than half the price. I'd recommend going that route since I doubt you'll need the latest models if you're just into video plaback.

I've been offered an WD TV 1st gen for £20. It's not a live version either and has DTS pass through.

I think this might do for what I need as my Denon AVR1910 should handle the DTS and any other audio I pass through it. Soely for MKV play back is all I need really.

I also had the first gen WDTV for a long while untill it broke. DTS passthrough works fine (the machine itself doesn't do much anyway) and converting to AC3 is very easy if you ever have to. For that price you might as well get it IMO. The only problem I had were glitches few secs with some MKVs. Being choosy seems to be a trait of WDTVs.

I've read about they can be choosy on mkvs they play. When you had the skipping did you try running the mkv through mkvtoolnix? I had problems with the ps3 when using mkv2vob but running it through mkvtool fixed it more often than not.

It's not skipping, I got green glitches for some secs now and then (mkvtoolnix didn't do anything). SO the movie plays, but the screen is green. It played almost everything excluding VOBs/ISOs and some exotic mkvs, but what can you expect from a cheap device? Keep in mind that it's a very old piece of HW, so high bitrate rips might cause problems. I never tried high bitrate files on it since my TV at that time was crap, but normal 1080p rips at ~10-15Mbps were fine.
If you don't need a HDD/database and if you're fine without DTS decoding, just buy it.
