I've been pretty worried about this game for awhile. Something about it (no early reviews, no rolling demo or regular demo, sidestepping questions) was giving me a bad feeling.

Then I read stuff like this:

Quote:
Living World?
The ships i see on the highways don't even exit the highway at exit points, i can sit in front of a highway exit forever and nothing will happen to me...

If we compare it to waterslides, people generally need to GTFO away from the lower end of it before someone smashes into their face, why should this highway work any differently?

I can crash into ships @ full speed without even taking shield damage, and i can push them INSIDE of each other like they don't have collision detection with one another. I can also just literlaly fly through them.

But one cool thing i just saw was a ship getting shot at and blowing up for reasons unknown to me.

If this is true, then X Rebirth has problems that go way beyond shitty framerate. Sounds like an arcade game more than a gigantic space sim sandbox.

I was playing with graphics options to see which one has highest performance hit

I tested it in this sector: http://i.imgur.com/jip7dof.jpg

Default settings: 1920x1200, 4xAA the rest is maxed out

1) 4xAA=> 0xAA - no effect

2) shadows on => off - no effect

3) SSAO on => off - no effect

4)LOD 100 => LOD 50 - no effect

5) view distance 100 => 50 - no effect

6) effects distance 100 => 50 - no effect

7) shader quality high => normal - no effect ( max 1-2 fps)

1) Lenovo Legion 7 (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3080 16Gb, 32Gb DDR4, SSD 1TB +2TB

2) SFFPC (streaming via Moonlight+ Sunshine)

According the a ... dev? On the Steam forums:

Quote:
Depending on the specs you have, you might try to reduce the following two settings:

LOD to 1-10
View Distance to 0-30

This can have a quite drastic performance increase.

@locke_digitalus

Regarding my previous post. You need to restart game if you change certain graphics settings.

1920x1200, SSA off,shadows off, every 100=> 50, shaders normal Im getting 35 fps in this sector insted of 23-25 fps

so, just how arcadish is it ? It's the one thing i was afraid of it would be.

X3 was really something else. Every npc ship was real and did something real. Be it patrol a sector, fly from and to stations for something, fly from sector to sector to trade, deliver etc.

EVERYTHING was alive and working. There was nothing without a purpose. No eye candy ships to fill the void or something. No useless stations.

Good to know, that if this doesn't pans out, there is always that to go back to (also i need to cool it a bit with bf4 lol, before i get burned out haha).

Even in X3 apparently ships and stuff would be created out of no resource, supposedly this will not happen in x rebirth.

yeah but once out, they would all have a purpose. AI cheating resources, i can live with (and that's debatable, the npc corps surely have the money to build new ships. It's not like they all start the game with 0 creds Smile )

Framerate is around 30 - 40 with everything active, aside from the NPC models (And slow texture streaming.) the game is quite pretty.

But there's a number of bugs and other issues, I clipped straight through the first station during the campaign. Razz

EDIT: Screens.

@JBeckman

Did you push every setting to 100?

It seems SSAO, AA , shadows and shaders have little effect on performance. Mostly LOD and view distance. But even having LOD at 10 and view distance at 30 in cerain sectors I have like 35 fps. :\ this is frustrating.

It's all at 100, basic SSAO isn't too demanding but it's not very accurate either.

HBAO would be better but I think DX10 or higher would be recommended for that implementation.
(HBAO+ by Nvidia isn't bad either but I find it a bit too strong when I check comparisons though I still enable it in the games using that method.)

AA should be normal MSAA, 2x doesn't cause that much of a performance hit and SMAA is active in the background via RadeonPro but otherwise like you said it's those view distance and LOD settings.
(Since I've not compared them that thoroughly for all I know I could be rendering the entire sector in full detail with those at 100, ha ha.)

EDIT: Added some screens to the previous post too.
(Tried to capture the slow texture streaming in one image and that glitch with the station and clipping in another but otherwise they are quite normal.)

They are using an ancient shitty DX9 engine and they added even more shit on top of already an unoptimized engine. What a surprise that it runs like shit. So all they did here is take the existing game, dumb it down, put one ship for the player, put some copypasta attempt at Mass Effect hubs, put "even more stuff despite it's DX9" (why would they develop a completely new DX11 engine in 2013, right?) and release this poo. In space no one can hear you fart. On earth people can. And apparently, they could in Egosoft's interpretation of space, as well as have flames and smoke. I hope this fails miserably.

I haven't followed the game much at all really, liked the earlier ones and pre-ordered this a while ago.

Learned about the DirectX 9 only thing some days ago and also that it was likely to still be 32-bit although that wasn't really much of a issue.

I also only recently learned that it was still their current engine albeit updated a bit further.

So yeah it could have performed a bit better but hopefully they can salvage it partially via updates in the future though that could take a while.
(Especially if they decide to implement DirectX 11 unless it'll be like X3 and such features will be coming in a stand-alone expansions.)

EDIT: Can't comment on gameplay much, was just doing the campaign to learn the controls and such and so far it's much like a tutorial so I've got nothing there.
(That glitch was unfortunate but there's probably going to be quite a few issues discovered by the community the next couple of days, something for the first patch to consider for Egosoft I suppose.)

would be quite boring to play a 100% silent game in space wouldn't it? I get that it would add realism, but it just wouldn't be worth it.

That is something I didn't try, wonder how it would perform there though from how I read your post that nearly sounds like a CPU limitation though you probably have a fairly strong CPU already so that would still be a bit weird.

EDIT: As for my own system it holds up fairly well, CPU and GPU have managed pretty well even 2 years later due to the slightly slower development so even though there is a 4930K it's still on the LGA2011 x79 architecture without any major changes aside from higher base clocks (I run my CPU at 4.1 Ghz, stable and good enough for now.) and the 7970 was only just surpassed by the AMD 290(x) GPU's, although getting one of those would be sweet but not until there's some third party models out.
(Money is going to be troublesome though but that's what it means being a enthusiast PC user I suppose.)

I am liking this game thus far, the crappy character models and bad graphics in some places I can easily live with. Egosoft is pretty good at updates/patches and free content - so i am expecting it to markedly improve later.

Not far into it yet and it seems pretty good, not sure where all the anger is coming from, it seems like a typical X game (admittedly with some odd design decisions).
