We would still be perfectly fine with xp and dx9... just look at stalker for example

SteamDRM-"Call of Duty is the symbol of the true perfection in every aspect. Call of Duty games are like Mozart's/Beethoven's symphonies"

I'm not a demanding user but I'm a gamer and a programmer. Apart from two things that drive me insane(i've got used to no start button)
- Slow desktop loading.. WHY?!
- Manager takes ages to launch... WHY?!! x200
win8 is very solid and I have no idea what people are bitching about. I even forgot that there's such thing as metro.

I wonder how much of a hit a XP VM would have on my old ass system... currently playing gothic and I'm seriously thinking about getting an XP VM for it.

^ 3D acceleration in VM environments is just AFAIK.
Oddmaker wrote: | Just use a virtual install of XP or what ever that's what I do. |
I am talking about games that run without any issues in Win7 x64, XP VM would certainly be worse than a native Win7 x64 install.
Stuff like this:
- "Game is capped to 30fps when using Windows 8 (we have no idea why)." http://www.play-old-pc-games.com/2012/05/23/no-one-lives-forever/
- Or the Windows 8.1 mouse issues described already (and here is a specific example http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3141977 )
- Or some cracks not working under Windows 8.
etc
They are not huge issues, sure, but the benefits or rather one single benefit "Battlefield 4 runs faster" do not outweigh them. Not for me and not yet anyway.

It's all fine and nice but The Witcher says otherwise. I had to go back to Win7 just to play it. I'm sure there are more games that are completely incompatible with Win8.

Oh noes, stupid developers do shoddy coding -> blame the OS. Vista suxx0rz, guyz, for realz.

And XP is faster for gaming than Windows 7 because it doesn't take 4MB of VRAM for AERO.

Actually, what took the 4MB VRAM was the desktop window manager, which rendered UI into the video memory for faster rendering. Windows 7's AERO did not require more memory, it required little GPU power to render, and only when the desktop was visible.

Yep, blame developers for making games incompatible with future OSes. Seems legit.

It is new MS' anti-crack protection. They can detect cracks on the fly! And prevent you from running them!

Add me to the crew of the Windows 7 aficionados who couldn't care less about PR ding dongs and fake features created exclusively to attract the nextgen people.
No DX11.2? Big deal, I can live just fine without invisible advanced tessellation, HBAOplusplus^2, bokeh 2.0 and motion bloom. As a matter of fact, I would disable these anyway even if my OS supported them

i choose win8 because it was cheapo than win7...
cheapest win7 i was over the years was home premium for like 70usd
got win 8 pro for15 bucks, digital download directly from microsoft. And have seen promos of the boxed version for 20-40 usd.
it's very similar to win7, it has pros and cons, but i can live with them.

So Win8 is dah best for gaming, right ?
I just remember a MS guy who said "We also aimed Win8 at video games players, it is more powerful, consume less memory and offer the best experience for gamerz out there."

Quote: | How to extend the update to other games
Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.
The update also includes an extension mechanism to resolve this issue in additional games. If you encounter this issue in games that are not listed in the "Games that the update applies to" section, follow these steps to extend the update coverage:
Click Start, type regedit.exe in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.
Click Yes if the User Account Control dialog box is displayed.
Browse to the following folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
Note If the Layers key does not exist, right-click AppCompatFlags, click New, click Key, and then type Layers to create the key.
Create a new registry entry for the game. To do this, right-click Layers, click New, click String Value, type the full path of the game’s executable file in the box, and then press Enter.
Right-click the value, and then click Modify. In the Value data field, type NoDTToDITMouseBatch, and then press Enter.
Click OK to confirm the change. |
