Soo I'm looking into upgrading my HDDs, stopped on 2 drives:

1 SSD for OS: KINGSTON SSD SV300S3B7A 120GB 130$
1 HDD for games:
SEAGATE HDD Desktop Barracuda 7200 (3.5",3TB,64MB,SATA III-600) 216$
or
4T SG ST4000VN000 NAS 240$

is that SSD good?

I like the Barracuda's speed of 160mb/s avg over the NAS's 130MB/s avg, but the NAS one's expected to be more reliable..? but I'm gonna install games on it and play them..

Also how's it going with the 2TB limit? on 64bit win7, will it be able to allocate 3-4TB partition?
And can I make it a GPT disk to go around it?

Also what settings for formatting a partition of that size are recommended?

I Am Disappoint

Yes, SSD is that good.

My friend who I play Rome 2 campaign COOP with (We both have 100 hours logged now) runs the game off his normal hard drive and I want to fucking strangle him. I load to the campaign map and battles in less then 10 seconds. Meanwhile, it takes him more then a full minute for each time he needs to load.

You made a slight woopsie sir, go back and read his question again Wink

And that seems a little overpriced for that SSD StrEagle. It's a fine SSD, but $130 seems high. That said, what do things like a Samsung 840 Pro or better yet, Evo cost for you? Or Sandisk Extreme II (which is surprisingly awesome)?

Oh, yeah. Read that wrong.

Anyways, I recommend the Sandisk Extreme II. It won't win any benchmarks, but it's still up there and has reliability that most other SSD's cant touch. Has a decent price as well.

For that price you are better off with the Vertex 3 120GB IMO.. Used them in 6 pc's that i build and they are all still going without a single hiccup Very Happy

and 1tb ONE platter wd hdd for D:

some games goes on C, but it is mostly for apps, system and so on. System works very fast this way

Actually, regarding SSD, that depends what do you want to achieve. Whether it is top notch performance in some ground or perhaps a decent level of reliability, or both - with a good balance. This ofcourse, leads to the main aspect tho - the price. The false hype of SF, as I like to call it, seems to be dying down a bit, and thats good. (BTW, KV300 is indeed a SF disk, lol Razz)

That said, 840pro series are still probly the best ones in terms of performance (and i mean real performance, IOPS for example, not only the sequential read, which unfortunately most of the time is the way people judge the ssd's) with their own controller undeniably kicking ass. 840 series are still good as well, kind of a 'mainstream-i-dont-want-to-spend-too-much-for-top-notch-ssd' target. 840EVO are a lil breakthrough with their capacities although I am curious how their durability is going to look like (remember, EVO series is TLC - 3 bits per cell whilst 840/840pro are MLC).
Slightly cheaper option, but still well performing is the m pro plextor series, which, together with much cheaper but still viable m5s plextor series, is one of the most reliable options because of the marvell controller. If you want to stick with Marvell but somehow cannot get the previous ones, you might as well go for the Crucial m4 which is still available and also is one of the most durable disks for a LONG while.

One might ask: "Hey, what about the rest?!". Well, to be honest, there is none, for me personally. I do not trust SanDisk, neither OCZ disks, for example. And yes, I know, OCZ switched to indlinx and new ExtremeII is based on Marvell, but its just too quick for me to give them any kind of a go. Both Samsung and Crucial have proved being able to provide on consistent, high level of performance with Plextor being not so far behind.

what about the storage disk?

EAGATE HDD Desktop Barracuda 7200 (3.5",3TB,64MB,SATA III-600) 216$
or
4T SG ST4000VN000 NAS 240$

is paying 30$ more for NAS worth it?

Common misconception really, everyone seems to think they won't last long but in reality and daily use, they simply will.
People need to stop thinking those tests and reviews are accurate when it comes to realiability lol

My 830 has pretty much 24/7 uptime and has 3,53TB of writes and it is about 14 months old now.

oh, that 3,53 for 14 months of constant usage is like brand new, lol ;p you keepin it light out there bro Razz but yea, you would need to precise what daily use means and take into account the fact that every other user means other kind of ssd load Wink The higher loads (lol, Very Happy) are what makes the vulnerabilities present, mostly.

If my currency conversions were correct

And if you are not running a raid, don't get a NAS drive because they most likely have a feature called TLER which will give up on bad blocks very quickly because it assumes you have a raid that can rebuild them

Oooh, didn't knew that! Nice.. soo Barracuda it is!

although you are definitely right with the tler being not so efficient for a normal disk, in most of NAS disks those parameteres (along with others) are adjustable Wink)
