I'm sure we have all dealt with someone like this before... they join your group, say nothing, contribute nothing, and just tag along... and if they DO anything it's probably useless and you have to discard it.

so we had a useless guy from our last class, once a new class started and we got a project (worth 40 percent of our mark) we sort of stuck to the old group and he sort of just tagged along... and we felt too bad to say hey we don't want u in this new group please get out...

so now we are a man extra... so I went to the teacher hoping she would force him out.... but she is like OK its fine but just know that now I'm gonna be expecting an even better project from you guys since you have 7 people in your group instead of 6....

FUCK THIS SHIT... this was already hard because it was almost like working with one less member (since he is useless) but now we have to deal with higher standards and expectations too.... we are fucked now.

So wait, you're afraid to tell him that you don't want him in the group and hence you are "stuck with him"?

Only way this changes is if you tell him or kill him or he somehow "gets the message" which is not likely given how he's spent all this time "not getting it".

If you do decide to kill him, make sure that you're wearing your badge. Cool Face

Yes, yes I'm back.

This happens every. single. time. Very Happy

If there's a group project with several people involved, there's always The useless guy, too.

The one who doesn't ask questions, always nods, takes no initiative whatsoever, does something useful only when he's somewhat forced to with the "fine, if you insist.." attitude and activates the intraceable_mode as soon as some major problems emerge. It's just so typical xD

Lol last time people took advantage of me in a group, it was a 4 man group, noone did anything and everyone disappeared. So i did the work alone, at the day of the presentation, everyone's like

"Sooo what do we dooo, man did someone do something?"
Me: Nop, i just did my part
"What do you mean"
Me: My part, what i had to do, that.

Presentation time, Me: "Teacher, my group couldnt do anything, we had problems communicating so i could only do my part, i can share that bit if i may"

What was my part? the whole work, i explained everything alone perfectly LOL Troll Face

Oh wait! Then after the grades got published the MOTHER of one of the guys went in to argue with the teacher, i got pulled into the mess, THEY DID THEIR WORK!, BLABLA! IN the end i was asked what happened and i said "Well ur son didnt do anything, he didnt do any work" she asked him and he just pulled his face down because he didnt do shit and her mother was astonished when she realized what had happened. Group projects are really fucking stupid. Especially in -college-. They really don't teach you anything expect that people are assholes, just like in real life. Perhaps it's only sensible thing I learned from it.

Most of the professors don't really care who is your group, who ends up doing the work, etc. As long as stuff gets done.

But, if you must, just bullshit your way through it. That's what We did with our senior project. We were practically done within 2-3 months with 1-year deadline.

If it was me I would tell him he has one more chance to pull his weight if not then he is out. Try and find something he is good at and suggest he carries out that task. I assume he is on the same career path as yourself? Well if so he must be good at something to get as far as he has.

You have to tell him, it's for his own good, if he is as you say he is then he has gone through his entire life riding on the back of others work and achievements. People like him always 'get on' they get management posts and are bloody useless at it.

Just be diplomatic and say "the group feels you are not contributing as much as you could, and there is a possibility all our grades will suffer because of this" that way the oness is on the group not just yourself and he should feel guilty that he is letting you all down.

If not then insist he is moved on.

I'm the guy that calls you and curses at you on the phone for being a lazy fuck, university projects are neigh-impossible to do alone and my future is on the line. I have no problem calling people out on their shit and it usually works since they either leave the group or do their part. I don't mind doing extra if you try your best, I mean last time we had a guy who was dyslexic so I checked all his work on spelling and grammar.

tldr: Be an asshole for your own sake and either dump his ass or put him into your personal work camp.

Entire class are cops,,, this guy though is a border services guy (one of only 4 non cop people in a class of 75)...

And conflict management at work is easy, in my personal life I'm muh more lenient and because it's a group work I don't feel I can take a unilateral action against a person. Sigh I think what I'll do is draw up very direct guidelines of who is doing what, also I'm drawing up a project contract that I'll send to everyone to explain the expectations and ramifications of ignoring it.

So has the whole endless emphasis on group project bullshit in college/uni permeated into other countries as well? For the longest time I thought it was centralized here in the states.

For fucks sake, whatever happened to "I know what I am doing, hence I'm responsible for my own success or failure in the course"?

It's Darwinism from an educational standpoint. The guy who does nothing/never understands/never puts forth any effort will fail, and the rest (hopefully) will take care of itself. Why should others be forced to unwillingly pull his weight or be pulled down with him?

Nothing enraged me more than forced group-work in college. Evil or Very Mad

There's being paired with an incompetent member.

And then there's being paired with an over-competitive member who's so fucking competitive that he won't even discuss his work fully in hopes of taking as much credit as possible, later. Laughing
