Sad

Been fighting with this goddamn laptop (not mine) in order to install Win7. New laptop, so obviously Win8 on it. Go into BIOS (no fancy UEFI UI Sad) to disable secure boot..greyed out? The fuck? Figured that one out (requires setting a supervisor password, turning the option off and then you can clear the password again ), stick in the USB flash drive with Win7. Get into setup just fine, but then..

"Can't install to this drive" - eh? Realised that it's UEFI+GPT, Googled to see how the fuck that's supposed to work with Win7 (mind you, I don't have anything with EFI in the house except my Mac, my PC is still my trusty i5-760 w/ simple BIOS), apparently the procedure to create a flash drive for that is a lot more complicated, but supposedly Rufus actually does do it. Tried that, to no avail, stuck on "Starting Windows" now.

Time to start the manual procedure, see if it'll boot then. Otherwise I may actually have to () use a DVD to install for the first time in...I don't even know how long. YSOCOMPLICATED Sad

Can't you convert that drive to MBR and set storage boot option to 'Legacy' or something?

I once managed to install Windows 7 on UEFI+GPT combo but Windows 7 Loader cannot into GPT drives, so all the effort went to shit anyways. Embarassed

Yep. Cloned that partition onto a flash drive, set it to legacy mode and went the MBR route Neutral

Still don't get why a GPT partitioned flash drive with Win7x64 wouldn't boot, but oh well.

Maybe you didn't make it an active partition? Cool Face

Oh it booted alright, just wouldn't boot. Razz

It got through the setup loading files stuff, but then just stalled at "Starting Windows". So even though it does really boot off the drive, *something* was preventing setup from starting properly.

Well, after updating my BIOS (or UEFI if that what it's called nowadays), I have so many options regarding those things I wouldn't even know how to boot Windows 8. Surprised

Not BIOS! It's UEFI.

Teh latest achievement in motherboard technology! So Much Win

To be honest, the advanced mode works exactly the same as good ol' BIOS (identical keyboard input).

The standard (3D Mode Laughing) version on the other hand was too simple and childish for my taste.

Yup, UEFI is the "new thing", mouse control and a "snazzy" new UI. I still prefer the classic Ami/Phoenix stuff but, oh well, progress is progress. That Gigabyte one looks like fucking clown shoes though, I much prefer the muted stylishness of the Asus UEFI;

Oh and the "EZ" mode one for derpas;

On laptop you still get the plain old AMI/AWARD ones; they have UEFI, but not the UEFI UI Razz

@ Raccoon: to my understanding, the fastest boot will be in UEFI mode, as there's no real POST process like with traditional BIOS. I couldn't get the laptop I had here to boot in that mode though and it requires a specially formatted and partitioned flash drive to work.

installed windows 7 on my uefi board fine, until i found out there is no loader etc. working with it Smile

But since i haven't bought a new dvd drive yet (old was ide rofl) i never got around reinstalling windows Smile (first install i borrowed a drive from a friend).

I'm not wrong, right ? There is no loader that works with uefi ?

Because now, several times a day i have a popup telling me i MIGHT use a non genuine version of windows ^^

FUCK THAT FUGLY SHIT! It's like the ugly UI craps they put on "smart TVs" that is so hideous, you want to throw the remote through the fucking TV.

BTW, my laptop also has UEFI, but I like the simple and elegant interface:

I never thought of my UEFI's UI as being ugly before. Maybe the 'artistic design' and choice of colours isn't particularly appealing but it's very functional, and that's what matters to me. Wink

The regular BIOS found in my previous motherboard (from Gigabyte) was blue letters on black background, so is this one. I've gotten used to that. Smile

@sabin1981 Are these screens yours? If so, you're running i5-2500K at stock? Shocked

Besides, BIOS version also seems to be slightly outdated. (Maybe more recent version would help maintaining SLI stability. You had problems with that, right?)

There is! The latest DaZ loader works with UEFI, I've got my Win7-x64 "activated" and I have UEFI on my Asus P8Z68. You need to be running your HDD in MBR mode, not GPT.

Naw mate, thanks for the info/help, but these are from G.Images -- and they're taken from Anandtech iirc. I'm running the latest UEFI update (iirc....) and hell no my 2500k isn't at stock Very Happy

I believe he meant 'UEFI boot for storage devices'.

It works like that:

GPT HDD will only boot using UEFI boot mode (Windows 7 loader doesn't work)

MBR HDD will only boot using Legacy boot mode (Windows 7 loader works just fine)

(These are labeled as 'Storage Boot Option Control' on my screens.)

So, if your Windows 7 HDD/SSD is MBR and you managed to activate it using Windows 7 Loader by DaZ, your motherboard is probably set to Legacy mode.

Whoever said you can only boot from UEFI with GPT is grossly mistaken, nor do I have any "legacy boot mode" - or anything similar - set for my drives. They're all MBR and bootable from UEFI, I know this because I was the one that set it up. All MBR, all bootable, all AHCI, Win7-x64 activated with DaZ and not in "legacy mode", there's not even a single mention of anything remotely to do wtih "Legacy Mode" throughout the entire BIOS, except for USB devices.

~edit~

http://support.asus.com/FAQ/detail.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=P8Z68-V%20PRO&p=1&s=39&os=&hashedid=JjlGHLJGJPFfGCFA&no=41336DB5-0363-3F6D-D7A5-C19F7619D871

Seems like it BECOMES an issue on later updates >_< I don't have the "Windows Boot Manager" stuff though, my boot order is purely HDD listed.

Open Device Manager, then

#1 #2 #3

What's your partition style? If it's GPT, you would have to reformat.

Hell, I don't even HAVE that option, haha. According to ASUS the first two options in the boot list are UEFI and the rest are legacy, but egh, the first drive in that list is my Windows boot drive and it's formatted for MBR. Go figure Very Happy
