|
 |
So I'm trying to get my xbox to do digital audio through my PC and as it stands I only have optical in on my onboard audio card.

It got me thinking, maybe that card is actually better than my PCI XFI Xtreme Music. Anyone have any opinions? Oh and if you know how to get audio in working.. I'd appreciate it.. its just occurred to me it may be audio out only :\..

Looks like that for audio IN, you would have to resort to the analog inputs. S/PDIF ones seem to be all OUT only, unless you find a sound card that has one for input as well. Even so, it seems this doesn't quite work as expected (based on some quick googling). I have my onboard disabled, so I can't really check. Either way, S/PDIF IN seems to be a rarity for consumer PC sound cards.
Do you have surround speakers connected to your PC? If not, there really isn't any need for a digital IN connection, since output will still be analog in the end.
Edit: Seems like sound cards with those are not such a rarity at all. Asus Xonar D2X has it, for example. One needs to verify if it supports Dolby or DTS input though, because if it doesn't, you will be limited to stereo, in which case using the digital connection is not really required.

+1 for FiiO. They are super well built and sounds great! I got E7 which the E17 derived from and sounds yummy as hell. As usual though, your sound will only sound as good as what it's coming out of. Buy a nice DAC, you'll need nice headphones.
None of this Logitech, TurtleBeach bullshit people keep buying. Sennheiser, AKG, Audio Technica or one of the other awesome brands.

Thanks for the input Spykez. I already have a good pair of Sennheisers and some BOSE noise cancelling cans. I'll probably grab some new AKG cans when I get some spare cash... although that might be a while.
