I almost always used the maximum of 3 pawns and did run into a part in the midgame where I was overpowered and killed everything which took a bit of fun out of it.
Then I continued the story though and a certain point things get much much better in that regard and you'll be getting your ass kicked no matter what you were doing before.

Well shit, I didn't know my size matters. Guess I'm screwed, my MK is very sluggish with all that equipment. I'll try fighter.

I was up to the Dragon fight when I quit, I lost interest a bit. Since I hate leaving games unfinished, it tickles my mind. Is the game the same from now on or does it get a bit more interesting and/or varied?

For me that was when it got the most fun and challenging.
Also the story finally gets going there for a bit before it's all over and I really liked that final part of it.
While enemy variety increases, environment variety decreases with areas that are more or less the same except for the random enemies.
If that bothers you you might not get as much enjoyment out of it as I did.
The dragon battle is incredible, and when you get past the chamber of confusion you should get a decent idea of what awaits you in the final part.
At least play until that point and decide if you wanna grind it out to the end then.

Thanks, I'll do the boss battle and see how it goes. I really loved the game, but the enemy variety is really low and the areas don't really interest me anymore.

I've been wildly on the fence about this one for so long. I mean, I HAVE IT, but I've yet to sit down and dedicate any time to it..
For all those who have played/loved it, I heard the game was very buggy, did the bugs hold you guys back at all? Were they troublesome? Gamebreaking? Was the difficulty curve too much? I'm up for a challenge, just curious really.
I've played the little intro twice, like right up to the dragon killing you or whatever. Seemed pretty cool, but I've heard "bad" things.
Can someone sell me on it so I don't end up missing an epic experience? Does the cool combat hold up for the entire game? Are the friendly AI guys helpful or obnoxious?

I don't remember any bugs, just annoyances like NPC party members talking too much and somewhat repetitive travel (dark arisen expansion adds more easily accessible fast travel for those who need it)
Difficulty starts out pretty hard, then gets easier and the finally gets hard again at the end.
Dark arisen content is very challenging.
The AI guys are fun to have around imo, they do stupid things some time but it's fun stupid things. They fight well enough if you consider their personalities (they determine their AI) and build your group accordingly.
Story, while not going forward for a big chunk of the game, ends up pretty awesome imo.
It's not complex but it's cool, at least I thought so. There's not enough here to play it just for the story though.
The combat and enemies you fight alone make it worth playing this game and if you can enjoy good combat it will likely carry you through the game even if you have no interest in other aspects.
My thoughts from over a year ago still stand: this is still one of my favourite games of this console generation.
It's flawed, but it has some really awesome stuff that shouldn't be missed.
Enjoyed this more than Skyrim (unmodded )
But hey, Mister_s is making progress it seems so maybe you can wait for him to finish and give you a fresh unbiased opinion

It's really worth it to give it a try, but a try in this case may be long hours.
There's a lot of good stuff in the game and the combat system is seriously one of the best I had the pleasure of experiencing. It does hold up and it does remain challenging, altought arguably more in some parts, than in others.
You'll curse the game sometimes, esspecially when night finds you in the middle of nowhere - because the night is seriously a night here - it's dark and full of terrors ;p. You'll often ask yourself why do you run all those long miles from one end of the map to the other - but you'll keep running them nonetheless.
It's a spectacular adventure with a lot of content and many nicely developped game mechanics... and, as Surray already pointed out, even the story turns out to be quite a bit better, than initially expected. Also, I encountered only a few bugs (can't remember anything major, to be honest), but performance is, sadly, far from perfect. That might be one of the reasons for the bad name and harsh opinions. The rest is simply the fact that the game is, at its core, quite hardcore - not DS harcore, but still definitely not for everyone.

I'm not done yet, but I think I invested 30+ hours into it. I haven't seen a single bug in those hours, but I'm playing Dark Arisen so it's probably patched up. Technically it's crappy, runs pretty bad and doesn't look very good (it's a mix between "wow this looks great" and "WTF happened!? This looks like shit"). So don't expect much from the tech department.
It shines in gameplay, introduces some pretty kewl elements. The vocation thing is great, you're not bound to one class the entire game and you're not some jack-of-all-trades either. The vocations felt very diverse to me. Combat is great, boss battles are especially very good. Enemy diversity is bad though, but all RPGs have this problem I guess. PAwns system works well, hire some pawn(s) supplementing your character. Their AI is pretty good also.
Some aspects are bad obviously. There's only one big hub, which gets boring fast. Traveling back and forth gets a bit tireing. Pawns can get irritating fast, babble babble babble. Characters you meet aren't very interesting.
I'm not as excited as some people here, but it's definitely good. The part that shines most is the combat for me. I don't think it's very hardcore, I didn't find it very challenging after some hours, but it isn't easy either. Easily worth a try, even with the technical fuckups. I'd give it a 8/10, I don't think that'll change.

And the ironic thing about the pawns "I don't think we'll ever tire of this place" at Gran Sorren. I bet it's an sarcastic comment, at least i hope it is.
Finished it yesterday, and holy shit this game was awesome. I was going to finish up quests before ending it but i was infuriated after finding out that part of the witchwood was closed to me because i didn't do a fucking quest in the start. A open game with a closed of zone permanently! sounds completely insane and can only be done by jap idiot designers. Well, enough ranting. But the game was awesome and the dragon boss was amazing as well. The set up for the fight!

Yup. Just like FFIX, the most powerful sword in the game (Excalibur II) can only be acquired if you race through the FOUR DISC epic and get to the final dungeon in less than 12 hours. Or FFXII with the Zodiac Spear that can only be acquired by *not* opening a certain four chests you encounter throughout the game. So surely the chests must be logical or have a warning on them, right? Nope. Completely normal chests but if you open them, like the other eleventy gabillion chests throughout the game, you don't get the spear.
Japanese developers love doing shit like that.

I wonder how on earth people have found out about it. Opening chests is one the most natural thing in the world in japanese rpgs.

Yup, I always wondered that too - same with game cheats. I'm convinced that the developers surreptitiously leak info like this onto message boards or, in the early days of gaming, into mags/TV shows. Or when hacking/editing tools become more prevalent people dig around in the code - again, like the Final Fantasy games, people have discovered the exact code, triggers and formulae for all the battles, weapons and skills for many FF titles.

I'd rather be a baka gaijin than a super obsessive jap gamer playing the same game for months if not years.

Yeah I'm still sad that Deep Down didn't turn out to be Dragon's Dogma 2...
Fought an Arch Hydra recently and threw an exploding barrel into one of it's mouths as it reeled and blew it up, blasting the head away.
There's so much awesome stuff here.. I really need a sequel.

*bumpity bump*
I recently resumed my playthrough after a year long hiatus from completing the main story. My Arisen was at level 72 Assassin. I have been furiously playing it non-stop for the past 2-3 weeks, since I was done with Dark Souls II.
God dam, this game is so fucking awesome. I beat Daimon almost 6 times now and almost close to my goal of reaching level 200 (currently at level 193). I ran through entire BBI solo as a Sorcerer to balance out my Magic and Strength stats. The only real threat for me in the game right now are those dreaded motherfucking Frostwyrm and of course Death. As a Sorcerer, I can't seem to damage Death enough. I can spam High Miasma endlessly on the Frostwyrm right before the fucker regenerate it's health.
I'm so pissed at Capcom for not bringing this title to PC. I would forgo their last 3 shitty Resident Evil titles being ported to PC and rather have this game. The scope of this game really begs to be enjoyed in high definition and better frame rates. Honestly, it's one of those gems that Capcom needs to focus, as opposed to Lost Planet franchise, which suffice to say, should be nailed shut.
