It goes from Vista to Win8, I see no problems with that.
And just like escalibut I too haven't had any problems with Win8.

+1, using Windows 8 since day 1, no issue here. Actually it's much better and faster than Windows 7.
Specs:
https://www.origin.com/en-us/store/buy/battlefield-4/pc-download/base-game/standard-edition
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

I don't see the problem with Win8, I really don't. Except for the metro UI (which you can remove with different 3rd party SW) it's basically the same look/feel albeit with improved stuff under the hood.
I had some issues with it however on my laptop but that wasn't really win8 but more that there weren't any suitable video drivers for it (some old i5/ati hybrid).

Jfyi... i too tried Win8 with Metro and hated it. But with something like Startisback, you have the old Startmenu and can deactivate Metro and all the other shit. That way its really the better Win7.

How exactly does the fact that more people are using Windows 7 (which has been on the market considerably longer) make it the winner in terms of performance?

unless something actually requires windows 8, i won't change. Period.
or unless someone can me show (and prove) that windows 8 is substantially faster (whatever that means) then windows 7.

The only reason I'm using Win8 is because I actually own a legal license of it.
That and I couldn't be arsed to reinstall win7 again and have to redo all the shit that comes with it.
Ohh and by the way, I'm still wondering where in Origin I can find all these details...

It was like 18€ with that trick combined with a discount code...that's almost like if it were free to me.

So am I mate.
As I've said it's not something totally different but it definitely feels a bit faster.

When i tested Win8 on my Notebook, the starttime when i was able to start programs was about 30secs or so. With Win7 it was 1:30 mins, probably even longer.
And that was without a SSD even.
But searching, or even googling, for simple system settings (like changing some settings for the current WLAN connection) made me so mad, that i had to uninstall that mess.
IMO Win8 is only good for newbs that never really used Windows before

that's hybernation for you. :3
Windows 8 uses kernel hybernation - it basically closes all programs, writes the kernel-part of the ram to the disk and shuts down. unless you do a reboot or disable kernel hybernation you can't really compare times to Win7... and if you do it's about the same speed, maybe slightly faster due to a smaller kernel.
the article escalibur linked is definitely interesting... I might give it another go when I find the time.

I've already written that few messages above...
"I think it is faster. Starting/shutting down, copying files etc... I like new task manager aswell, image mounting without (mostly annoying) 3rd party software, etc.. and Metro could be much better but I dont miss old start menu at all. After you clean stock Metro apps and set the ones you really use/need it is pretty useful."
