Quote:
Mickey Mouse is returning to star in Castle of Illusion, a fantastical HD reimagining of the classic Sega Genesis game. The game is scheduled to release in summer of 2013. We know that Castle of Illusion has a special place in many gamers’ hearts. Sega studios Australia is putting lots of care into this new 2D/3D game.

Our plan is to deliver a fully reimagined experience that takes advantage of the power of PS3 with all new graphics and new adventures, while at the same time making sure that the game maintains the Disney magic that the original Castle of Illusion captured in 1990.

We have also been working very closely with the director of the original game, who is now at Disney Interactive. We are having a blast working with her to realize many of the elements that were intended for the original game, but couldn’t be achieved until now due to the technical limitations of previous generation consoles. If you have played the original game, you will also see that we have kept intact many of the major iconic elements of the game that helped define this groundbreaking game at the time of its original release.

Look out for our developer interviews and behind the scenes videos to catch the Sega Studios Australia team and members of the original game development team share their experience working on Castle of Illusion.

SEGA AND DISNEY INTERACTIVE ANNOUNCE CASTLE OF ILLUSION FEATURING MICKEY MOUSE

Iconic SEGA Genesis Title Returns to Consoles in Summer 2013

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO– 15th April, 2013 –SEGA® Europe Ltd., and SEGA® of America, Inc. in collaboration with Disney Interactive today announced the upcoming digital release of Castle of Illusion staring Mickey Mouse™, a complete re-imagining of the iconic Mega Drive/Genesis side-scrolling adventure first released in 1990. Developed by Sega Studios Australia, Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse will be available worldwide for digital download on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for Xbox 360®, PlayStation®Network and Windows PC in summer 2013.

Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse first debuted on the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive in 1990 to critical acclaim. Excellent controls, music, and graphics helped to bring the magic of Disney to millions of SEGA fans around the world. Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse will continue this tradition. Completely rebuilt from the ground up, Castle of Illusion has stunning visuals and new gameplay mechanics. Fans will enjoy the original storyline as they help Mickey save Minnie from the evil witch, Mizrabel.

“The original Castle of Illusion was tremendously entertaining and has a well-deserved reputation as a SEGA classic. Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse brings this great game to a new generation,” said Chris Olson, vice president of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “Mickey is back and he looks fantastic.”

Some of the criticism does seem valid though. Smile

Good in theory, but Sega Australia's work gives them little chance of achieving those goals thanks to terrible input lag, imprecise movement and spotty collision detection.

That's not good.
(And I assume it could be even worse on PC with mouse+kb controls.)

Played a bit, game is fun but it's one of "those" games so it's frame locked to 30 which is going to be a issue for some people. Smile

EDIT: That wrinkled bitch took my ho!
(Or whatever that mouse would say, when not moderated by papa Disney.)

Not overly fussed about the 30fps lock on games like this, it's not the same as 3D action games.

Should remove the 60 FPS cap. Smile

(From a later post in that topic.)

EDIT: I compared the exe against the original and there's just one difference, probably just a change of a single byte to uncap the framerate, this could also lead to the effect where the game is speed up at high framerates and slowed down when framerate is low but I haven't tried it myself, hopefully there's no such side effects. Thanks JBeckman. I uninstalled the game a couple days ago because I couldn't deal with the framerate. I'll re-install and try this out.

Game is fun as hell! Never thought i would have problems with a boss like i did with this games final boss. The problem was though that if you die you only have half your hp upon revival, which i find largely retarded. Spent the last 2/4 of the game with only 3 hp Razz

Why does games like these assume that you own a fucking xbox controller, let me remap the controls. Wtf is wrong with the developers.

But it is like you're being fucked over for not liking that piece of shit controller from Microsoft. So many games these days don't even support gamepads in general, but just that shit. I really hope the PS4 gamepad will become more popular and get official support for PC as well. I'm pretty sure at this point that I'll buy that at some point to replace my current gamepad and I'll just emulate it if need be.

I know you have strong feelings on the whole controller thing.. but,, I did once also and I can vouch that its really handy just to have one for pc on the desk for those just incase moments... I bought the xbox 360 for pc one and its been really good to be honest on pc for varying games..

When im lazy lazy.. I can even use it on FFXIV and kick back in my super comfy chair and do the laborious gathering stuff Very Happy while looking at other screen for films etc its a god send in that situation Very Happy

@moose

I think he's talking specifically about the 360 controller. Everyone codes primarily for that these days, so you're forced into buying either an official 360 pad or an xinput compatible one, lest you have to resort to driver emulation, and when developers use xinput it invariably means you can't remap your controls in many games.

@DR

I just use my PS3 controller with MIJ and BetterDS3. It's not "official" but at least I can use, in my opinion, a far better controller and still maintain xinput compatibility for games that force it by using the X360 profile for BetterDS3. I also get the choice then of being able to use the controller as a standard 16-button HID which works for all sorts of games. The xinput stuff has the d-pad listed as a hat switch and many older PC (and some newer, such as those made in RPG Maker) don't read the hat as a d-pad, forcing you to use the goddamn analogue stick for 2D titles Vomit At least with PS3/BetterDS3 I can switch profiles on the fly.

I thought there were really good tools now to just allow any use of a pad type. it just picks up on the presses and sets them up blah blah all done?

wasnt there one like xpadder or something.. I dunno I was just sure it did not really matter no more what pad one used, even modded ps ones

Well, it does matter. The emulation methods are still not perfect, at least not for my gamepad. I can't get my triggers to work through the emulator, meaning I use my bottom buttons as triggers. There are also some games that have issues with the emulator, the most recent one I had was in Dust: An Elysian Tail where the emulator made the game constantly drop to 30ish fps and going back to 60 every 2 seconds or so, introducing some horrible stutter. Luckily I found a different .dll which made the game drop to just 55 fps and it was a constant framerate. Another issue I still have with this method is that it doesn't get rid of the terrible button prompts in games. Those xshit buttons have such an obnoxious look...

Well that's why I use BetterDS3 rather than x360ce. I haven't had a single issue with the 360 profile yet, everything works great and works at the system level rather than using .dlls for each game.
