I should really go and play Europa Universalis IV for a few MONTHS before this game is patched up.
It has had a slating on metacritic user reviews. Clearly CA knew this game was a buggy POS due to their commitment to weekly patches. |
It's sad when you think about it..two of our most awaited PC-exclusive games, CoH 2 and Rome 2, are also amongst the biggest failures of the year.

I get 43 fps on my laptop: y580 3630qm with gtx 660m
I guess the patch helps a bit.
Using the benchmark at 1080p.

Is it possible to play this co-op cracked? I keep getting kicked for VAC authentication failure when trying to host a local game (we are on the same network) and my friend gets host left the game.

Most things in tw games can be fixed by mods. Already there are several mods that adress a lot of things, that lessened the fun.
And those are just very basic mods, but already they make a big difference. In a month or 2, we'll have the first morefleshed out mods, bundled with a couple CA patches and then the game should be perfectly fine.

Exactly what things are broken?
I've been playing almost 6-7 hours every day since release and I've only encountered a couple of bugs that I could still work around. The big one I keep getting is dudes not torching the gates unless I right click it a hundred times. Also had one case where a coop campaign mode savegame didn't work. Other then that I've honestly had little issue with the game.
Performance for me is good as well, but I've got a pretty beefy system so I could see how most others might have shit performance.
In fact, its about the most bug-free release of a total war game I've seen. Empire was FAR worse at release then this one is.

AI is sort of broken, enemies hire many crappy little armies that have no hope of defeating you. It's like swatting annoying gnats whenever they try to mount an offensive. Battle AI sometimes acts retarded (check the two Angry Joe videos about this). And battles themselves are a downgrade from previous entries in the series. Capturing flags in open field battles? No guard mode?
Diplomacy sucks, factions who should be groveling at your feet will always demand treaties that are too far in their favor. Why should I pay them for a trade agreement when I could easily crush their last remaining city?
Performance really is terrible. Those of us with good PCs should be blowing it away, not merely running it acceptably. I've seen people who claim they maxed Shogun 2 but are forced to run Rome 2 on low. Personally I run it on mostly extreme settings and get 40-60 fps in battles, but the campaign map stutters like crazy and runs at 19-30 fps.

yeah I've been playing a pretty long campaign as Rome but so far there hasn't been any challenge.
I'm just going around conquering everything I please, auto-resolving 99% of the time because the battles are not worth fighting. Nobody ever puts up a fight.
The only danger was the civil war but even that was only a slight speedbump when there is nothing else to fear during their revolt.
Battle performance is acceptable but campaign map performance is terrible with texture pop-in whenever I move the camera and a huge fps drop whenever I select a city or unit (might be related to those range overlays that appear or the real time pathfinding thing)
core i5 3570
radeon 6950 2gb
16 gb ram
Shogun ran a looot better than this even before I upgraded my CPU a few months ago which used to be a core 2 quad.
The battle AI also has some issues that sometimes make battles trivial with their horrible decisions.
Oh and Testudo formation doesn't seem to work which is a shame. I just get destroyed by missile units with testudo.
Also tried putting stuff on AI control in a battle but my units either just stood around doing nothing or chased a fleeing unit for no reason but maybe I did something wrong.
And yet, even with these problems, I'm still playing and enjoying it. It's not a SimCity level disaster but it needs work.
I see a bright future for this game when (if?) the problems are fixed...

honestly, so far, i haven't seen anything, that wasn't like on previous TW games. Performance issues seem to be restricted to certain configurations (my game runs perfectly fine on extreme witha 660ti, 8gb ram,3570k@4.3ghz)
The combat AI, as stupid as it may act in certain conditions (defending something, mostly), isn't anything different then any tw game before it (it was less visible in shogun2, because of the nature of how siege battles worked).
But nothing that a few mods couldn't tweak tbh.
Same with the campaign AI. Nothing different from any other (vanilla) tw game. A couple tweaks and mods and it's going to be just fine

Hey guys,
Does anybody know what happens with the "10GB Backup dir" Reloaded speaks off? Is it automatically removed, or do you have to manually delete it yourself? Thanks in advance for any help given.

From the previous page:

Im not sure where these temporary files are located, probably your default temp folder but dont quote me on that.
It doesnt download any extra files, the patch is 21.8mb, what it does is patch files that are very much larger. most studios have a propietary method but most use a 'diff' algorithm that they run on the gamedata
Once they have the list of identical byte sequences, they just need to send the old and new offsets, the length, and of course anything that's completely new. On the receiving side, it's then a straightforward assembly of sorts. it copy the bits its need to keep from the old file, and fills in the new bits.
so if they have to patch a few of those .pack files 10gb is easily reached. Again this is not anything the patcher downloads, and the space will be returned to you after the patcher is done(or upon the next reboot) |

I just had to let 60 minutes run out in a siege defense battle because some AI ships failed to disembark and the AI decided that it will just stand around and do nothing...
Time to change to 20 minute limit I guess, considering how fast battles are when they work that should be fine.

yeah when I got close to a unit, that unit and other very close ones would start chasing me, but the rest would just keep standing there.
I didn't have a lot of units and had to rely on the defender's advantage so after pulling a few units I got dangerously low on morale and went back inside.
The 3 or so units that were still chasing me then just stopped outside of the walls and jerked around in front of the gate doing nothing, occasionally losing some guys to the oil dropping from the gate. they never actually attacked the gate unfortunately.
Even if I could have gone out to fight them head on I don't think I could have ended the battle as the guys who failed to disembark completely are not attackable. I think angryjoe had that in one of his videos.

yeah i've seen that happening, when the attacker has no possible way to enter a city. So it just heats up the CPU with some crazy AI script looping hehe. It's like running prime95 lol.

among all the hullabaloo its a good question.
This has been discussed welll enough by the like of Anonymous Dev and GMEiden very articulately in the TW Forums.
For me the game fails on two fronts in its current form. Poor AI and the guts of the original game ripped out in an attempt to speed up and streamline the new gameplay. This would be fine if it wasn't for the fact that the AI just isn't balanced and smart enough to deal with a lot of the stuff that's been changed.
If your new to the series you might not notice a lot of the problems the hardcore see. But that's what this series and games are all about. The detail. Controlling garrisons, nurturing Family dynasties building campaigns not on some abstract scoring system but through hours of hard won micro management and labor that is easy to track and feel connected to.
There is some good stuff, Provinces work well enough, diplomacy and a ton of factions. But for some of the good there is a ton of bad stuff. No Family trees, 1 year per turn so that Generals and there armies die to early before taking advantage of buffs, lost armies unrealistically rebuilding to same strength and experience over just a couple of turns, agents are just a shadow of what they were, continued management of garrison attacks by low stack armies, and a crippled navy system, flags in battles which drive me to stop playing battles and just a whole heap of other issues related to speed of play, blob army formations which just add to a general tendency not to play tactically a half baked user interface system with playing cards to abstracted for my liking, lack character and warmth . The whole game just doesn't feel like an evolution and certainly not what was promised during Rally Point and the lead up demonstrations some of which are obviously only a portion of what the team were expecting to achieve..

i also miss reforms (marius, sulla etc). Also they really butchered the game when it comes to units. It's basically unit 1, replaced by 2, replaced by 3. Eventually you end up with the most unlikely of troops ... the Pretorian guard or ... gladiators ...
Neither of which are "real". I mean yes, the pretorian guards and gladiators existed, obviously, but neither of them were ever a "fighting in an army" type of unit. So having 20 pretorian guard units steam roll anything on the other side is just a big WTF in anyones face.
Can't wait for a ROME 2 TOTAL REALISM mod lol. With proper units (names and stats) possibly regional and limited (both where and how many you can recruit) etc.
Like .. you have the choice between first cohort (legionaires), veteran legionaires and legionaires ... obviously the difference is stats wise, from better to worse, with a slight increase in cost. But without any restrictions on the number of any kind to recruit any of them, obviously you'll recruit only the best (which are the pretorians rofl).
I mean, how can i possibly recruit 100 units of the FIRST COHORT. Or 100 units of VETERAN legionaires (while having never fought a war haha).
It's all these things that kinda lessen the fun for me. But this was in all TW games and mods will change that, so i'm content for the moment.
Nothing of this is game breaking anyway.

Not game breaking no, but I would like my game back CA. This isn't what you promised to be fair. Still I've been quite vocal on the forums and been contacted by Anonymous Dev. He's put a good case forward for looking at more than just bug fixing. CA know things need to change.

Dat Radious, just released an AI mod.
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?619396-Radious-AI-Mod&p=13221084#post13221084
Quote: | Hello everyone. Time for tweaking campaign AI just here. We all already noticed that vanilla Ai this time shows many many flaws and this mod wil l try to do its max to improve campaign AI and make from it some challenge for players. Recruitment priorities and behavior/agressivity will be key elements of this mod.
Updated - 8.9.2013
Changes:
Changes to AI recruitment priorities - more balanced armies with less ranged units (this will be very hard to complete, first needed file for this change is edited, but AI modding is divided into many many files, not all can be modded yet, so dont expect super balanced armies yet, but it should have small effect on your game)
AI difficulty bonuses edited - normal difficulty and easier untouched. From Hard difficulty AI got several small bonuses to develope faster, maintain more and better armies. Bonuses will be rise with higher difficulties, none is extreme.
Recruitment slot for armies increased by 1 - global bonus for player and AI
AI will prefer slightly more military developement and construction.
Ai will try to keep less money and spend more on armies and construction.
AI preferences at war are military constructions and navy
AI will spend less money on and cultural building, wil lprefer more military and economic structures
AI will spend less money on agents, more on armies and navies
Addtional recruitment preferences, less archers, more cavalry and melee units.
Much more to come, much more testing needed. |
(Complete updated Radious package)

Diplomacy doesn't work (again). I'm steamrolling someone and they give me a peace offer for half my money. Wtf? Also why the hell can you only give % of money? The lowest is like 10%...WTF?
The addition of molotovs is also insane, since siege equipment has become useless. A large army can take over a huge city in one turn. And the AI is beyond BAD, the only thing it can do is zerg rush. I've won countless "lost" siege battles by just making a half square formation around 1 gate (because they only go for one gate), which they burn down and just rush through.
