Ambrov X lands on Kickstarter, former BioWare writer to participate if stretch goal is met
Ambrov X, a story-driven, cross-platform science fiction RPG set in the universe of Sime~Gen, has landed on Kickstarter, and the $750,000 stretch goal will bring on former BioWare writer Jennifer Hepler.

Ambrov X is an five episode RPG in which your relationship and emotional ties with a single-bonded companion character take precedence.

The single-player, action role-playing game will contain difficult decisions that “truly alter the flow of story and quests,” and is fully voiced with cinematic dialogue scenes.

Players can choose their gender and from the two human sub-species Sime and Gen. Classes such as the Endowed, the Monk, the Agent and the Sentinel can be chosen and all weapon and armor can be modified through the crafting system.

The game features a companion system that is lore appropriate and is being developed in the Unity engine for Linux, Mac, and PC with alternate releases for iOS, Android, PS4 and Xbox to be released at a later date.

Ambrov X is being developed by Loreful, an independent game developer out of Cincinnati, Ohio founded in 2012 by creative director Aharon Cagle. The firm also includes lead game designer Ben Steel who worked on such titles as Guild Wars 2, where he served as an Event Designer.

Helper said what drew her to the project, which she at first skeptical of as she thought was a “Mass Effect rip-off”, was the source material and how “intense” the game relationship could be if “your followers if they were more than friends, more than romances – if they were both a part of your soul and the greatest threat to it.”

Her thoughts on the project can be read through the update on the Kickstarter page.

At press time, the Kickstarter has 29 days left on the clock and 200 backers have already pledged $25,811 to the initial $500,000 goal.

Hepler left Bioware? The writing should improve for them, then.

Yeah she did leave : http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-08-16-fan-harassed-writer-jennifer-hepler-leaves-bioware
but dont worry Bio still has a lot of bad writers left, anyway game doesnt look very interesting and any involvement of hepler would probably be the nail in the coffin for it.

Not going to let some writer's input prejudice me against something that might be pretty good. Who knows, it might be that she's a really good writer without the awful taint of BioWare/EA.

If i read correctly: Jennifer Hepler was also responsible for the dwarven origin stories and developments in DA:O. And the noble/castless stories were probably some of the better stories in DA:O. At least from my point of view. On the other hand: she wrote a lot of the stuff in DA2.

So, pixieking might be on something here....We'll see. As the devs are saying: not enough space opera stuff out there...

That's the worst stretch goal in the history of Kickstarter games.

There's writing and there's writing. What I mean by that is, you can write down the bare bones - the structure - of a story and you can actually write the dialogues and basically the true "flesh" of it. You can take a really bad bare bones story and still make it great by having engaging characters and dialogue.

I mostly find that Bioware's modern writers do a LOT of pandering and back patting. With that I mean "WELL DONE player! You saved our entire society! Here, let's sing your praise!" and a lot more of that. For people who go "Jolly jolly, I'm a hero!" and lap up that shit, I'm sure it's great, but it starts to get boring and old when you're always the greatest fucking hero to walk the earth.

Baldur's Gate I & II didn't do that. There's a very restrained sense of you bringing as much doom as heroism and the game constantly shows the double edged sword, of you causing destruction wherever you go.

A real tell-tale sign that Bioware's writing has become more and more shit, is the way they have been sliding from games with a lot of grey characters, to games with very clearly defined good & evil.

Kickstarter has been cancelled. From the backer email:

Quote:
To all of our Backers --

It has been a long week and even longer weekend. The Loreful Team has spent the time since our last update brainstorming and debating on our campaign. We have collectively come to the conclusion that our best course of action is to cancel the campaign and regroup. Our daily quota to reach our goal is simply out of our reach.

But that's ok.

What happens now?

We continue! We never planned on our Kickstarter being successful. Kickstarter is an unknown and was never part of our funding strategy. We thought we would take a shot. We took our shot and it didn't pan out for us.

The upside is that we learned A LOT! We connected with some amazing people and we found 1,001 backers who believe in us. We also received some incredible feedback about our game that has made us rethink some crucial elements. We are taking this feedback internally and focusing our efforts on Ambrov X.

One thing that is important to remember: We are in PRE-ALPHA. We are at the very beginning stages of this game and we have a long way to go. We decided against releasing the pre-alpha because we took a unique stance in doing so. We wanted to add a bit more polish than usual. But in doing so, many have confused our polished Pre-Alpha with a poor Demo. While we are immensely satisfied with the Pre-Alpha build, we felt that releasing it would actually do more harm than good.

So now, we continue our campaign into the private investment arena. We've had much more success there. We've also received some interest from publishers. So the options open to Ambrov X are many and we are going to continue on!
Will Jennifer Hepler join the team?

We certainly hope so. We are committed to working with Jennifer and we'll find the funds to bring her on.

To the 1,001

To those of you that stuck with us. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! You gave us such great feedback, stayed loyal to the cause and we want to reward you. So we are promising all 1,001 of you Beta Keys to our Beta (when the time comes). We have your contact info and we won't forget you.
What can I do and how can I help?

Join our community at community.ambrovx.com. Join us on Twitter and Facebook. Your feedback is invaluable and we want to continue the conversation and the journey with you.

While we have decided against continuing crowd-funding elsewhere (at least for the time being), we will have many opportunities for you to support Ambrov X in the near future. Stay Tuned.

Finally,

We believe so strongly in what we are doing. We believe in Sime~Gen as a great, undiscovered property in gaming. And we are committed to it one hundred percent. Our project is ambitious. No doubt. But we believe in a world with more than a handful of Story-Driven, Science Fiction RPGs and we will not rest until we have made this amazing game come to fruition.

Thank you again,

The Loreful Team

Am kind of disappointed, since it sounded intriguing, but they were totally screwing themselves out of money with the whole "All 5 episodes for $25" thing, and there wasn't even a lot of uplift from it. So I can see where they're coming from with cancelling it.
