My performance in battles is fine, i can deal with it. Its the campaign map that kills me, basically one turn is the same as is one turn in CIV5 endgame or the original Rome endgame. So because i'm at the start i have 3 or more turns doing fuck all which takes up an insane amount of time. Funny, i was really annoyed with the original Rome for the same reason, never thought i'd be the same in 2013.
Who thought it was a good idea to have a bazillion factions!?

damn, started a new campaign and the etriuscians captured rome and the most southern city after like 10 turns from me ^^. I moved my main army chasing some of their armies and while i was gone, they went to town ... literally ^^
Also in open ground battles , the ai doesn't seems "dumb" at all. Unless my forces are totally outnumbering them, they always give a good fight and even win sometimes.

The Etruscans are annoying. Then if you capture their two cities north of Rome they start sending a bunch of ships to blockade your ports. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to conquer their island city first so they don't have that option.

I think I'm going to stop playing this for a few weeks until they patch it up because it looks like crap and runs even worse.

runs ok here on i7, amd 6870, no stuttering/drops or whatever. game seems good, although its kinda cheap you don't here a voice when checking a letter (would be better if there was voice acting in the background while you keep playing..

I can't even remember Empire being this poor at launch, and that game really made me rethink pre ordering and all that jazz. Holy shit I hate this game. But my own fault I guess, ever since Empire I always gave a new total war game a year or so before touching it and by that time it was good. Should have known.

I remember pirating Empire and it was completely awful, just like this really. I now realize I only bought Shogun 2 on sale for $17, so it was rather old when I got it, 6-12 months. Maybe that's the secret to enjoying a CA game.
I also remember pirating M2, and how guys would just stand under my arrow fire not moving, apparently it went on to be a rather beloved game though I never touched it since then.

Shogun 2 was a mess as well at first. Flickering textures and skies, crashes, performance. Once the DX11 patch came out, it suddenly became smoother with everything on in DX11 than it was before on DX9.

The game is truly a mess both in terms of performance/visuals and AI and deserves a ton of patching, even more than usual... though deep in its core is still entertaining as always in my opinion. Same old game, but the Ancient Rome is still so damn fascinating. Just not the "ultimate" Total War experience that I was expecting, not even close sadly.
They had the chance to create something epic and decided to follow the safe route, which would be fine..if there weren't so many technical problems
Perhaps my expectations were too high this time, but I'm glad that I didn't buy it...they haven't learned anything. Darth Mod where are thou.

There probably won't be a Darth Mod, that guy retired from modding and is now making his own game: http://www.ultimategeneral.com/

Oh, I didn't even know that.. We're doomed then
It's time for him to seek glory (an money), which is totally understandable. I would have done the same if I had his talent. Hope he reaches his goal.
edit: the game looks neat.

Just wondering, when you say "had the chance to create something epic [but] decided to follow the safe route", what exactly do you mean? What exactly is missing here to make it Epic, other than technical issues of course. What exactly is safe here that wasn't before and what would be considered risque?

I just can't get into it. Empire and Napoleon and Shogun looked so much cooler with the firearms and cannons. They just made the series infinitely better, I thought. Plus the naval battles were awesome...not so much in Rome 2. You just ram a ship and board them or fire arrows...it is kind of boring. The research tree and the buildings seem rather limited, and while I do like the huge size of the campaign map it just seems more lifeless than the rest of the TW maps. I can get over the graphical issues but I can't really forgive the gameplay issues.

What I meant with my post was, this Rome II is a huge game and more open than the original Rome (more factions to choose from, and very differentiated too, good regional management aspect), but when it comes to AI, the patterns are often too predictable and kinda "adapt" to the player in a conservative way so you often know how the CPU will react (except for the elephants, those are unstoppable xD). Generals feel underdeveloped too, almost like a gimmick.. I expected something more to be honest.
Also even if the map if is also enormous, it appears somehow limited, since there aren't many open spaces, only a series of "paths" in natural environments that include small valleys, and somehow the overall pace isn't exactly exciting and developing provinces and economics can be surprisingly dull. (with excruciating waiting times :<). Tactical battles can be such a rarity a times . They could have done more and better in my opinion, instead of creating a 'default' TW with only a few improvements, some drawbacks and the usual dose of bugs. Still a very good game, but

yeah right ... because anything with the UI says console ...
oh no it doesn't ... if they would use the current UI for a controller ...
GOOD LUCK
so please stop writing nonsense...
add :
And some AI nonsense :
AI attacks one of my Port Main Cities (Provincal capital with port, best thing to do hehe) So it's a fortified port so to speak. They attack with a full stack of amphibious troops. 2 of them enter the harbor and when they disembark, getting slaughtered by my entire army (only place you can get into the city, small landing strip inside the harbor). Now the the rest of his troops landed outside the city, without any ladders or siege equipment. A couple Hoplites cower at the wall, getting peppered with javelins and arrows. The rest of his forces are on the beach, not moving.
I think the AI has some major issues with walls, indeed.
And this has been the case since Rome 1.
also it stutters like hell, no matter where i look at or what setting i use (low-extreme) which makes me think this isn't a gpu issue, but the AI burning the CPU with endless loops or something.
add: indeed my cpu is burning. 90-100% on all 4 cores. And pushing temps as high as nothing else (75-80C) There is definately something wrong with the AI calculations (or something).

I get a minor slow down on Extreame when there is marine landing and shortly after ship path finding. Runs fine in general mass battles. I'm certain this is a CPU problem and although I have an i7 I don't think the game is properly optimized for it, which sounds a bit sucky to me for this day and age and a major release. Really decided I don't like the stylized vector graphics of the menus and prefer the old portraits and little picture illustrations from previous games. I keep forgetting what some of the more esoteric 'picons' mean and so keep hovering for labels and info which is just poor design in my view. Also what is it with the cinema mode in game battle camera. utterly pointless and very jarring when you right click out of battle, especially since you seem to get thrown to some random location on the field.

I´m very sure you understood the meaning of his post (I wouldn´t claim that I do but let´s try). If they had this plan since the start of the development (highly possible), integral design decisions were made to prepare the porting to consoles. So said future design elements like UI or general features will be derped down to fit the console clientele.

yeah and my point was, the UI is the contrary of derped down compared to other TW games. Heck, most people think it became too complicated. Quite the contrary of derping it down.
And they were talking about future TW titles. Not the older or current ones. There is simply no way in hell, that rome 2 was made "with consoles in mind".
But mark my words, enough idiots will start talking about it, like it was and will blame anything that is wrong (or they think is wrong) on consoles.
Just watch how this thread is going to fall apart now rofl.
