Games For Windows Live Service To Be Discontinued On July 1st, 2014
Quote: | In case you did not get the memo with our earlier article about Batman: Arkham Origins’ DRM, GFWL is going down. And a couple of hours ago, Microsoft itself revealed that the service will be discontinued on July 1st, 2014. This information was shared on Age of Empires Online support page, however Microsoft was quick to react and re-edited that page. However, Reddit’s user ‘recawn’ has been able to capture the previous page that contained Microsoft’s message about GFWL.
As the message reads:
“Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1, 2014. Although it is available through Steam, Age of Empires Online requires features of the Games for Windows Live service. You can continue to enjoy all the features of Age of Empires Online as the service will remain 100% operational until July 1, 2014 when the server will shut down.”
Our guess is that Microsoft re-edited the page in order to provide a more official statement about GFWL and its future.
For what is worth, a number of games will be jumping from GFWL to Steamworks. Bioshock 2, Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Asylum are three confirmed titles that will get Steamworks support in the near future. |

good, hopefully will be able to redeemed Arkham City and Minerva's Dan on Steam, which I don't own the Steam version.

GFWL going down is only for the better, but what about all the previously released GFWL games? will devs keep their promises and remove GFWL drm now that it's going down?

Yeah I've read that in the news. Apparently selling teh Xboxone without Kinect is impossible since turning it on by saying "Xbox on" is one of the key experiences of the console.

still funny. the best part was the price rise of shares after this announcement,

Microsoft has transformed from a reliable-if-staid purveyor of products people need to a rudderless ship thrashing about trying to re-invent itself...and succeeding. They've re-invented themselves as a ridiculously undependable company that takes an abusive stance towards it's customers and forcing solutions to problems that don't exist upon a market that doesn't want them. |

Now now.... you left out Win7, which is Vista with a handful of tweaks but otherwise identical and not substantially faster.

I've upgraded a ton of laptops from Vista (they shipped with it) to 7 and there wasn't a big speed increase. Mind you, they shipped with Vista and all had at least 2GB RAM, which is the most important part. With lower amounts of RAM 7 is indeed substantially faster because it clears caches up quicker.
Either way, Vista does not belong in a list of failures unless you put XP in it at the very least. Vista at launch was better than XP was at launch, period. XP was more taxing even on hardware "designed for it", about as stable as Microsoft's stances on the Xbox One ( ), had less drivers available and to boot it came with teletubby mode enabled by default.

One of them (Aspire 5051) is still running today.

from my experience, i preferred to use windows 2000 AS instead of xp, and windows 2003 instead of vista. no ideea how has vista when it got fixed eventually, but at launch and shortly after was a bugged piece of shit. (from my pov ofcourse) i was so happy when i finally started to beta test win 7 ...

i remember that at launch 50+% of blue screens (and they were a lot) was because of nvidia drivers (number from an article). eventually those drivers got fixed, but still it had other issues and compatibility problems. according to some friends vista become okish usable with sp2. at that point beign to late to be adopted enmass.
