Tried two small european nations: Wallachia and Moldavia. Ended up in being totally annihilated in 11 years....Moldavia was annexed by Poland, while the ottomans conquered Wallachia.
Must be a way to play the lesser nations without being fragged quickly.

Get cushy with someone with lots of pointy sticks.
Eg Byzantium 9/10 times will get steamrolled by the ottomans
HOWEVER if you somehow manage to get a alliance with the Timurid Empire .. then you have a chance of winning.

Never thought to ally with the Timurids. I usually try to improve my relations with Hungary or Poland and end up being their breakfast, or the Ottomans breakfast

same here! although I'm not quite sure yet how to accomplish the goal of taking complete control of japan.
I never played EU3 too much so I'm not sure how to even do simple things like this
Any advice? I guess I could start fabricating claims or something but is there a less messy method? | Well, I managed to unite the islands. With the bigger vassals I simply raised the relations and annexed them diplomatically, the smaller ones I just fabricated claims and invaded them. Kinda helps if you play as the Shogunate, I bet I would have had a harder job going it with one of the smaller daimyos.
Anyways, here's how things look right now.
After uniting the land, I just about got the first of those idea-collections, and went with expansion. Got a settler, so I colonized Hokkaido (the northernmost island), then the chain to the east and the big one north of it. Then I conquered Okinawa, where the Ryukyu were already there (their only province). After that, I discovered Taiwan, which was still unclaimed, so I did it. Had 6000 natives, who kept raiding my colony, so I was forced to exterminate them. (could have kept the army there, but they were needed elsewhere)
After that I set out to gain a foothold in the mainland, and as you can see it was rather successful.
I had twice-the-charm wars with Manchu. First I gained the coast, then later the inland. Korea thankfully kept them busy for most of the time.
Right now I'm consolidating the new territories, keeping the rebels in check and converting the population to my point of view.
The settlers are busy expanding northwards, lots of unclaimed territory in Siberia.

I just couldn't figure out what nation to play so I just picked my native one, Norway. Not much too do, pretty boring actually, but now I understand how a lot of things work.
When I decided to start over, I just had to try to break free from Denmark. The old trick back in eu3 was to just insult them to a low opinion but you cannot spam that now so the only option afaik is to declare war against them ?
Vs sweden and some minor german nation I had no chance in hell. Norway is sooooo damn poor, I'll have to get back to them at a later stage. Also Scotland completely crushed England after it went into major rebellion after losing the war vs France. Scotland also hated me, probably because of Orkney.
Evil country I tell you!!!
Not sure what I think of the game yet, slightly disappointed atm, but my expectations at some point was through the roof.
No fluff for Norway or Brittany :<

Here's my last AAR for the day.
While consolidating the new areas, I got a message that Korea broke their alliance with Xi, and since I had a 25k army right at their borders and they were alone, I declared war (tonns of CBs to throw around). My allies of the Shun empire joined in. We quickly dispatched their defenses and steamrolled through the peninsula.
But the warscore was stuck at 99%. Then I noticed that they had two provinces deep inside Asia, just above India. So I brokered a few military access treaties, sent a 10k big army and took care of those pesky outliers. Still, the complete annexation was impossible, since for some mysterious reason the game demanded a 230% warscore for total conquest. o.O
So I left them the peninsula and took everything north of it. Relatively calm times ahead, except for the Catholics.
Somehow they managed to weasel their way into the local trading hubs and now I have a constant -5% "Western Trade" penalty to converting provinces to Shinto, regardless of who I'm trying, resulting in an overall 0.0% progress each month. :X And to top it all off, random areas are converting to Catholicism, and all I can do is sit there and watch.
And the Xi Empire is getting ridiculously large. I'll have to try and gather a large enough coalition to take them down. Also the Muscovic (or something similar) empire is gaining lots of space just north of us (basically most of today's Russia). Can't decide if I want to use them to take care of the Xi. They are already huge, if they eat up the Xi, they will be the biggest force on the planet.

I wonder if this is a bug or a feature.. but I am playing as the Palatinate and with province claim and a core, I am still getting the unlawful imperial province (it doesn't go a way even if core'd, still the ~10 year timer).

Hmmh I recall it was the same way in EU3.
Kind of annoying.

No idea how it works in EU4, but in the EU3 HRE mod, that was also included in Magna Mundi it worked the same way.
You could however ask the Emperor for a lien, which when granted would accept your rule as temporarily legitimate, and decades later if you kept peaceful relations in the HRE they'd accept your claim, having a core made the process faster.

Well, that fixed it, but now Xtians are revolting 24/7 (with stacks of doom which I have no hope of countering) and Xi just claimed most of my earlier conquests from Korea.
Choosing Expansion instead of Exploration was a bad idea.

It really isn't that hard. There are less tutorials than previous Paradox grand strategies and this is the most streamlined and easy to use one I tried from them, yet still just as complex as they ever were.
Well worth a try for 600MBs.

I have one of the weirdest problems, after installint the FLT-release I noticed the computer starting to go a lot slower. After som research I found out that it had installed a couple of dlls and Paradox Interactive.exe together with devupgrade.exe. These start with the launcher or the exefile of the game.
Do you guys also have these in appdata/roaming/paradox interactive? My google-fu isn't good enough to find out anything abut it and I'm still waiting until the salary lands to purchase the game.
Oh, and when I terminate the processes that cause the weird lag the nvidia graphics driver crashes. Might even be related! /Edit
Best regards, Athair.

It's not really that hard to get into anymore, give it a few hours and you are set I think.
Ethiopia was a okay nation to play to learn the game. Kinda isolated and with one weaker neighbor that you can easily conquer bit by bit. Played 100 years or so and now I think I have a good understanding of the basics.
Started to fight oman and Hedjaz, and it was pretty tough since they have so much better troops than you. Also if you don't watch your war exhaustion and overextension, your country will get overrun by epic strong rebels. It should be hard alright, but this absurd rebel spawning still exist. Twice the size of your force limit could easily spawn within a few months. I wish they could handle it a different way.
Hopefully we'll get a patch this week. I want to try Japan, but it got some weird catholic bug issue.

Another Bitcoin virus?
EDIT: Essentially you are generating money for some unknown person at the cost of your computers hardware.
(If it's downloaded from a unknown or less trusted source check the installer in whatever way you prefer whether that means unpacking the files manually, comparing MD5 or some other means or just a virus scan.)
