Quote: | Paradox Interactive and Fatshark have announced War of the Vikings, a new multiplayer close quarters combat game in the spirit of War of the Roses.
A standalone entry in the new War series, War of the Vikings is built on a refined version of the engine that powers War of the Roses.
Players choose between Saxon and Viking factions, customise their warrior and weapons, and battle it out on 9th and 10th Century English soil in up to 64-player battles.
“We’ve been inspired many times over by the possibilities of the close-combat genre. It’s clear to us that that there are many more experiences we can share with our players, and War of the Vikings is our next step in establishing Paradox and Fatshark as leaders in the art of online war,” War franchise executive producer Gordon Van Dyke said in a statement.
Speaking to VG247 at a closed doors event in Sydney today, Van Dyke confirmed that female warriors will be available in both factions; after consulting with an archaeological expert in viking warfare, Fatshark was delighted to learn that women fighters are historically justifiable.
The producer stressed that War of the Vikings will continue the franchise’s traditions of emphasising skill over unlocks, but there will be plenty for veterans to collect, including more elaborate beard and hair styles and symbols of wealth. Although some interpretative allowances have been made, Van Dyke said he’s aiming for historical accuracy and a realistic portrayal of the viking profession, which has had some pretty poor PR for the last millennium.
We’ll have a full report from out chat with Van Dyke in the coming weeks.
War of the Vikings is coming exclusively to PC in the first quarter of 2014. It will be on show at gamescom, PAX Prime and the Tokyo Game Show, and if you’re keen, you can sign up for the beta now.
Here’s the features list from the announcement press release:
History Comes to Life (and then you kill it) – Historically inspired content from the Viking Age, including levels and environments, weapons, helmets, shields, and heraldry
Close Combat and Ranged Ravaging – Skill-driven fighting blends swinging, blocking, and dodging with intense ranged combat, including arrows, spears, and throwing axes
Mod Your Squad – Enhanced squad features allow players to define a role for their warriors in battle using custom squad perks to buff your hirdmen
A Viking to Your Liking – Design your own Viking or Saxon warrior, choosing everything from weapons and armor to battle perks, customized taunts to unhinge your foes, and a variety of beard options
Pick Your Battles – Game modes include up to 64-player epic battles, new hardcore “Pitched Arena” mode with 32 players and no respawns, and a Training Ground to test out new character builds

Well WotR is really fun, IF you are not playing against some pro gamres. Which "luckily" seem to play less and less.
Still play it from time to time.
But the developers keep fucking up the balance EXTREME since some months with their patches. So i doubt their next project will last that long.

Game is probably dead before release.
Like i said, WotR was/is pretty fun. But the developers fail so hard at balancing shit. Was pretty noticable when some months ago that Kingsmaker patch came out. Some days after that insteadt of for example 15-20 full servers, you only had 5-10.
You know have around 20-30 full servers, but that is probably only thanks to that free for ever trial.

They are already to lazy to re-model/add the chainmail neck-covers. So I don't have high hopes for anything vastly improved or added.

It’s time to start Alpha Testing for War of the Vikings, and you’re invited!
Anybody who either signed up five friends via the Alpha Signup page, or who owns a copy of War of the Roses: Kingmaker, is eligible to play during this test period. If you own War of the Roses, the Alpha will appear automatically in your Steam library; if you signed up via the page, you can redeem your key (sent in a separate email) by selecting “Activate a Product on Steam” from the Games menu. If you own Kingmaker AND you signed up your friends through the page, you can give a code away to a fellow Viking!
You can expect your personal Alpha key to show up in your email inbox or in your Steam library around 9:00 AM CEST on Thursday, August 22nd.
Please note that there will be limited room for players to join the game during this test phase. There will be 4,000 player slots during the test, so if you can’t log in right away, please be patient and try again later. The test will run from August 22 at 09:00 CEST (12am PST) to September 1 at 02:00 CEST (11:59pm PST) so you have over a week to help us test!
During the test, we’ll be trying out Pitched Arena mode on the Monastery and Gauntlet maps. You’ll have your choice of three character classes: The Warrior (an all-around medium class with a sword/shield and throwing axes), The Huscarl (a heavy melee fighter with a big giant axe), and The Scout (a light ranged class with a longbow and axe).
Thanks for being a part of War of the Vikings! Sharpen your axe and your aim, and we’ll see you on the servers.
Best Regards,
The War of the Vikings Team
